  • This paper investigates what kind of technological partner firms want to cooperate with in terms of partner location. Two geographical factors are considered. One is geographical proximity, given the tradeoff between the effectiveness of knowledge spillovers in proximity and diverse knowledge absorption from geographically distant partners. The other is how many other firms are co-located with potential partners because it is known that clustering regions can create more technological outputs. Analysis on 2008 Korea Innovation Survey data finds that partner proximity is the single most important factor in choosing a cooperation partner. While firms that are located in a region crowded with related industries prefer proximate partners, others that are surrounded by unrelated industries are more likely to cooperate with distant partners. The findings suggest that geographical proximity matters in partner selection because it not only stimulates knowledge spillovers but also reduces costs involving R&D cooperation such as monitoring costs and information costs. Moreover, firms take into consideration both the benefits and risks of clustering regions. If there are so many unrelated firms that they create agglomeration diseconomies such as congestion costs and unintentional knowledge leakages, firms are more likely to try to find their cooperation partners in other regions.

  • This study examined adomestic firm's perspective on how their choice of partner selection criteria affects the mediating variables and the performance of international strategic alliances with particular reference to previous experience as a moderating variable. The findings of this study showed that the task-related and partner-related criteria are both positively related to trust and commitment but the results concerning the partner-related criteria repudiates the existing practices that domestic firms select foreign partners based on the partners' attributes because this weaken the commitment of the partnership. This study suggests that firms should revise their partner selection criteria, which will eventually lead to the more desirable performance of international strategic alliances.

  • Although the impact of technological partner selection on the success of technological alliance is critical, little attention has been paid to the area of technological alliance partner selection criteria and the relationship between partner selection criteria and success factors of alliance. This study bridges this gap by understanding previous studies of general alliance partner selection criteria such as marketing, international, logistics and production alliances. I drew technological alliance partner selection criteria using AHP method with 12 experts who are currently in charge of technological alliance activities at Korean Venture Companies. This study found 4 criteria such as 'task-related', 'partner-related', 'learning-related', 'risk-related' criteria with 14 items and the relative importance of technological alliance partner selection showed as follows: 'risk-related', 'learning-related', 'partner-related', 'task-related' criteria. In order to test the relationship between technological partner selection criteria and performance, I used 215 survey data of Korean Venture Companies. The results showed that 'partner-related' and 'task-related' criteria had strong positive impacts on the success of technological alliance. Further, I put 4 moderating variables into the study model in order to see their moderating effects. However, no moderating variable showed significant effects. In conclusion section, I discussed the findings and implications of this study and directions for future studies.

Effects of Local Partners' Absorptive Capacity, Equal Equity Ownership of IJVs, and Trust in Foreign Partners on Thai Local Partners' Knowledge Acquisition (현지파트너의 흡수역량, 국제합작기업에 대한 균등지분율 및 해외파트너와의 신뢰가 태국 현지파트너의 지식습득에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the factors influencing the knowledge acquisition of Thai local partners from advanced foreign partners through international joint ventures(IJVs). For this purpose, this study initially identified three dimensions of characteristics in the context of IJVs that would influence local partners' knowledge acquisition - a local partners' own characteristic (absorptive capacity), a relationship characteristic with IJVs (proximity to the equal equity ownership), and a relationship characteristic with foreign partners (trust), and examined their effects on local partners' knowledge acquisition. The study further investigated the moderating effects of the tacitness of knowledge on the relationships between those characteristics and knowledge acquisition. Based on the data collected from Thai IJV local partners, results revealed that a local partners' own characteristic, absorptive capacity, and a relationship characteristic with IJVs, proximity to the equal equity ownership, had a strong positive effect on local partners' knowledge acquisition. Results further showed that the tacitness of knowledge strengthened the relationships between absorptive capacity and knowledge acquisition and between trust and knowledge acquisition, but not the relationship between proximity to the equal equity ownership and knowledge acquisition.

  • This study analyzes whether cooperating with various types of partners contributes to a company's innovation performance as well as the moderating effect of absorptive capacity and appropriability that may affect learning in such relationship. The hypothesis is that cooperating with diverse partners will have a positive effect on the innovation performance since it acquires their knowledge and information. In addition, an analysis is conducted on the moderating effect of absorptive capacity and appropriability on the relationship between alliance portfolio consisting various partners and innovation since absorptive capacity that encourages learning is likely to positively moderate the relationship between partner diversity and innovation while appropriability, the capacity to protect the proprietary technology, is likely to undermine learning from partners. The result of the empirical analysis on Korea's key industries, machinery and automobile, using the 2010 Korea Innovation Survey(KIS) data on manufacturing shows that cooperating with various types of technology partners has a positive effect on innovation performance and moderating effect on appropriability.

  • Since 1990s, more and more enterprises outsource the logistics to reduce the cost and improve core competence, which bring the prosperity of 3PL, industry in China. However, some data shows that the service quality of 3PL is not good enough, there is only a few companies that can provide systematic service, and the satisfaction of the customer is very low. Besides, many enterprises choose 3PL service provider mainly based on the price. Although there are many papers on the logistics service quality, they mainly research on single part, Studies on the relation between the service quality and the partnerships of outsourcing are scarce. Therefore, this study tries to research the service quality, partnership and the relationship between them in China's 3PL industry systematically. On the foundation of the service quality and partnership theories by former researchers, taking present situation of China's 3PL industry into consideration, this paper constructs service quality and the partnership evaluation system and develops LSQ-PP model to examine the relation between the service quality and partnership. and then use the Structural Equation Model (SEM) to analysis the full sample of collected questionnaires. Finally, the thesis summarizes the conclusion and offers suggestions for practice and future research.

  • Supply chain management is a strategic thinking which enhances the value of supply chain and adapts more promptly for the changing environment. For the seamless partnership and value creation in supply chains, information and knowledge sharing and proper partner selection criteria must be applied. Thus, the partner selection criteria are critical to maintain product quality and reliability. Each part of a product is supplied by an appropriate supply partner. The criteria for selecting partners are technological capability, quality, price, consistency, etc. In reality, the criteria for partner selection may change according to the characteristics of the components. When the part is a core component, quality factor is the top priority compared to the price. For a standardized component, lower price has a higher priority. Sometimes, unexpected case occurs such as emergency order in which the preference may shift on the top. Thus, SCM partner selection criteria must be determined dynamically according to the characteristics of part and its context. The purpose of this research is to develop an OWL model for the supply chain partnership depending on its context and characteristics of the parts. The uncertainty of variable is tackled through fuzzy logic. The parts with preference of numerical value and context are represented using OWL. Part preference is converted into fuzzy membership function using fuzzy logic. For the ontology reasoning, SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language) is applied. For the implementation of proposed model, starter motor of an automobile is adopted. After the fuzzy ontology is constructed, the process of selecting preference-based supply partner for each part is presented.
