• The present study describes the Bragg reflection of monochromatic water waves propagating over a train of doubly-sinusoidally varying topographies. A numerical model based on the boundary element method is firstly verified by calculating reflection and transmission coefficients of waves over a trench. Calculated solutions are compared with those of the eigenfunction expansion method. The model is then used to simulated reflection of monochromatic water waves propagating over doubly-sinusoidally varying bottom topographies. Obtained reflection coefficients are compared with those of available laboratory measurements, those of the eigenfunction expansion method and the extended mild-slope equation. A reasonable agreement is shown.

  • To evaluate wave reflection and transmission from buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers, hydraulic experiments were performed by using regular and irregular wave conditions. Buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers consist of buoyant main body connected with foundation structure in the seabed by hinge. The characteristics of wave reflection, transmission and dynamic response of the structure were investigated for 36 regular and 4 irregular wave conditions. It was also evaluated the usage of plain plate attached on the buoyant main body as one of alternatives to control wave reflection and transmission. From the hydraulic experiments, it was found that the case of plain plate attached on the offshore side is very effective to improve the wave transmission as well as reflection. But, the effect of the case on the harbor side might be negligible.

  • The paper deals with the application of Boundary-Fitted Coordinate System (BFCS) to the two wave models of parabolic and hyperbolic types developed on a rectangular grid system. Since the BFCS conforms the boundaries of the region in such wary that boundary conditions or calculation process can be accurately represented, improvement in predicting the wave fields can be achieved. The numerical results show a good agreement with the analytical results for either waves propagating or reflecting along a circular channel of constant depth. Simulation of reflecting waves in a parabolic wave model is accomplished by the backward calculation as if waves approached at the cross wall take a turn in the opposite direction and propagate against a channel.

  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic water waves over various shear currents flowing on a constant topography are estimated analytically in this study. The region of varying shear currents is represented by a finite number of tiny steps with a uniform depth topography. The proper numbers of steps and evanescent modes needed for the analysis are proposed by a series of convergence tests. The characteristics of reflection coefficients for various shear currents conditions are also examined.

  • A numerical model based on the boundary element method is employed to describe diffraction of monochromatic water waves due to varying topographies. The model is firstly verified by comparing obtained reflection and transmission coefficients of waves over a trench to those of the eigenfunction expansion method. The model is then used to investigate the Bragg reflection of waves over sinusoidally varying topographies. Calculated reflection coefficients are compared to available laboratory measurements and semi-theoretical results. A reasonably good agreement is observed.served.

  • An approach of decomposing the reflecting components is proposed by using the mild-slope equation of hyperbolic type which has the similar form to the shallow water equations. The approach is verified on Booij's problem and sinusoidally varying ripples. Inclusion of higher-order bottom effect given by chamberlain and Porter(1995) yields even more satisfactory results than the Berkhoff's mild-slope equation when compared with finite element solution or experiments.

  • In this study, we get an analytical solution for the diffraction and multi-reflection around a semi-infinite breakwater and breakwaters with a gap by using the solution of Penney and Price (1952). We find analytical solutions for single- and multi-reflections around the breakwaters by assuming that the reflected waves are regarded to be those diffracting through a breakwater gap. On the basis of these solutions, it is possible to understand the wave diffraction with different cases of incident wave direction and breakwater layout. These solutions may help harbor engineers to understand the phenomena of diffraction and multi-reflections around the breakwaters. These solutions may also be used to evaluate the applicability of wave transformation models which are used in designing coastal structures.
