The competition environment among companies is rapidly expanding into the world market. Therefore, this study intended to suggest an analysis method of patent portfolio that can compare an international technological capacity through empirical analysis on the global automobile companies. This study measured international patent activity using triadic patent data of 20 years from 1991 to 2010, and measured patent quality from legal, technological and economic aspects. As a result, Ford and GM, automobile companies of America, are analyzed to be the potential leaders with greatly increased patent quality. The significance of this study is in measuring international patent activities between global companies from different countries based on the triadic patent. And, this study suggested methods of analyzing patent quality consistently from legal, technological and economic aspects based on the triadic patent.

Patent litigation has been considered as a tool to protect and facilitate innovation. Ironically, yet, the misguided uses of patent litigation as a strategic tool for vigilance against competitors are acting as a hindrance for innovation. Previous studies show that the better the quality of a patent, the higher the chance of the patent being litigated. Therefore, it is particularly important for the innovating firms to take strategic precautions to minimize the risk of patent litigation. This study investigates the moderating role of firms' past alliance experiences on the relationship between patent quality and patent litigation from the perspective of a defendant. A unique dataset on patents, infringement lawsuits, and firm performances in the printed electronics industry confirms that firms' previous alliance experiences mitigate the impact of patent quality on infringement litigation. For instance, the results confirm that the presence of past alliance experience reduces the litigation rate by 33% for firms with median-quality patents. This paper makes two major contributions. First, it contributes to the literature on alliance experience by confirming its role as a reputation in mitigating future litigations. Second, this paper contributes to the literature on patent litigation by identifying a unique moderator, i.e., alliance experience, on the linkage between patent quality and litigation. An innovating firm is likely to become an alleged infringer under a false accusation. Therefore, this paper focuses on firms that partake in infringement lawsuits unwillingly. Despite the importance, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate patent litigations from the perspective of defendants.

In this paper, we provide a basic data to constitute knowledge map through analysis of competition situation such as analysis of patent activity for each nationality, analysis of patent activity for each applicant for a patent, analysis of patent activity for each technical area and analysis of competition status for power of security for market which consider qualitative level. In order to analysis LED data, we choose patent data of LED.

Every country of the world in the 21st century is going to push forward the policy protecting their intellectual property right, and international movement to protect their intellectual right is still more strengthened. Under these situations, the firm is required to seek for more efficient methods of technology security and business management while the existence of business itself is at risk. The control of intellectual properties in business should be considered in the patent management. In the company, the industrial property right should be into one of the management resource, and its importance has great influence on the existence of the company. The information in patent data can be used for strategic planning purposes. This study systematically evaluates the patenting behaviour of sample of 27 business firms within the Korean metal industry. Utilizing the patent application data between 2000 and 2005, the relationship between these patenting management and company performance is analysed. This study showed that patent activity per employee and labor productivity are positive relationship, but patent activity per employee and firm size are negative relationship. Since a positive relationship between patenting and company performance could be shown, patent activity gains important as a instrument for R&D planning.
