  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Korean medicine on patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. Methods: The charts of 47 patients diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease in the Department of Internal Korean medicine, Stroke and Neurological Disorders Center, Kyung Hee University Hospital, Gangdong between August 2012 and July 2016 were reviewed. The Unified Parkinson’s disease rating scale (UPDRS) was administered before and after treatment with Korean medicine. Results: Thee average UPDRS Ⅱ+Ⅲ, UPDRS Ⅱ, and UPDRS Ⅲ of the 47 patients decreased significantly from 22.26±15.15, 10.19±7.53, and 12.06±8.35, respectively, pretreatment to 16.96±13.63, 7.47±6.44, and 9.49±7.73, respectively, post-treatment. The average postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD), tremor, and bradykinesia also significantly improved post-treatment.Conclusions: These results provide evidence that Korean medicine can improve the activities of daily living and motor function of patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. In particular, Korean medicine may be effective for the treatment of PIGD, tremor, and bradykinesia.

  • The purpose of this study is to report the case of a patient with idiopathic Parkinson's disease treated with scalp acupuncture and Chuna manual therapy. A total of 10 sessions of scalp acupuncture and Chuna manual therapy were performed. At the beginning of the treatment, the Korean version of modified Barthel index (K-MBI) was 25 points, and the range of motion (ROM) of both knee joints was 150° in passive flexion, while active movement was impossible. In addition, both knee joints were flexed and contracted at -40° on the right and -30° on the left. Over the course of treatment, the ROM of both knee joints improved to -20° on the right and -10° on the left. The patient was even able to maintain a standing position and was allowed to walk approximately 10 steps with support. Temporary improvement was observed as a result of applying scalp acupuncture treatment and Chuna manual therapy to a patient whose symptoms were gradually worsening.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. It has no cure, but current treatments can relieve symptoms and maintain quality of life. As PD progresses, controlling its symptoms becomes difficult. Here, we present the treatment of two patients with idiopathic PD using traditional Korean medicine (TKM) and temporomandibular joint balancing therapy (TBT). We measured the progress of the two patients using the unified PD rating scale (UPDRS) and the Hoehn and Yahr (HY) scale. Combined treatment of TKM and TBT decreased the total UPDRS score from 52 to 26 after 21 days in case 1, while it decreased the total UPDRS score from 91 to 65 after 20 days in case 2. In both patients, the HY scale score was maintained at 3, and no adverse events were observed. Thus, the combined treatment of TKM and TBT can produce a treatment response in PD patients.

  • Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture with various scales on symptoms of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Methods : Subjects were voluntarily recruited by newspapers and internet. All the subjects are confirmed as idiopathic parkinson's disease by a neurologist. The acupuncture therapy was performed twice a week for 8 weeks. Acupuncture points for EA group were GB34, and LR3, electrical stimulation frequency was 120Hz, duration 15 minutes, and intensity is up to pain threshold according to patients. The patient's symptoms were assessed before, after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks treatments by unified Parkinson's disease rating scale(UPDRS), modified Hoehn-Yahr(H-Y) stage, Schwab & England activity of daily living and freezing of gait questionnaire(FOGQ). Results : UPDRS I, II, III, IV and total UPDRS scores were significantly improved after 4 weeks(p<0.05) and after 8 weeks(p<0.05) compared to the pre-treatment. The scores of ADL were significantly improved after 4 weeks(p<0.05) and after 8 weeks(p<0.05). There were significant changes in H-Y stage after 4 weeks(p<0.05), but There were no significant changes in H-Y stage after 8 weeks. There were significant changes in FOGQ scale after 4 weeks(p<0.05) and after 8 weeks(p<0.05). Conclusion : This study suggests that electroacupuncutre treatments can be applicable to improve symptoms in the patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

  • A 69-year-old female diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and treated with anti-Parkinsonian medications, including levodopa, for 7 years presented with complaints of wearing-off phenomenon and delayed onset of medication efficacy, resulting in postural instability and feeling of severe exhaustion. The patient underwent a 50-day course of treatment with Bonoesikpungjigyeong-tang formula. The effects of the treatment were evaluated by recording the average time to onset of medication efficacy, the average time to medication wearing-off, and discomfort due to wearing-off phenomenon. Postural instability was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The patient's overall quality of life was assessed using the EQ-5D-3L. After 50 days of treatment, the average time to onset of medication efficacy decreased, and the average time to medication wearing-off increased. Discomfort due to wearing-off phenomenon and postural instability decreased. This case suggests that Bonoesikpungjigyeong-tang might be an alternative for improving discomfort caused by long-term levodopa intake.
