  • The coastal deposits along Moonamni, Kangwon Province, Korea have been investigated by using deeply cored sediments(down to the basement rocks : Pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks and granitic rocks) in order to understand and propose the late Quaternary stratigraphy and related major unconformities. Three major stratigraphic -depositional units are proposed. The neolithic cultural sites in the Moonamni area are considered as middle Holocene coastal dunes, which were developed due to active supply of beach sands from Unit I(Holocene transgressive deposit). Such coastal dune sediments are characteristic in the upper part of Unit I(Holocene in age). So far, Unit II and Unit III are considered as continental deposits, such as fluvial-swamp and alluvial deposit, respectively.

  • A maximum of 3 km thickness of sediments were deposited above basement deformed by volcanic activities around the Dok Island. As the geological structure, the tension caused the basement-involved normal faults in the early stage of basin formation, whereas the sediment layers showed normal faults, volcanic domes and sills caused by volcanic activities. From the distribution of volcanics in order of age at the Ulleung Basin, volcanic activities were increased toward the northeastern direction (toward Dok Island). The study area is characterized by extensional crustal deformation before sediment deposition during the Early or Middle Miocene age, After the Late Miocene age, the basin was deformed by deep buried volcanics or subsidence of basin, in consequence, became complex geological structures.

  • The wide use of metal dusts have been found in industrial field and many dust explosion accidents occur by fire spread of dust layer. In this study, we developed a new experimental device to examine fire and explosion characteristics of the dust layer. Aspects of the burning zone over metals(Mg, Zr, Ta, Ti, etc) and PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) dust layers have been investigated experimentally to clarify behaviors (Spread rate and quenching distance) and effects of $N_2$ surrounding gas on the fire spread over metal dust layers. From the experimental result, it was found that the spread rate of metal dusts is larger than PMMA, the dependability of spread rate over the thickness of dust layer is small, and the minimum oxygen concentration of spread flame over Mg dust layer is 3.6-3.7 vol%. Since high correlation between the spread rate and the reciprocal of quenching distance was seen, relative risk prediction in those inflammable parameters can be predicted.

  • Tephrochronology is the study of tephra layers to correlate and date geologic events. As tephra layers can be used as time-markers, they are essential for the dating of Quaternary deposits. In this study, two types of tephra layers were found in the upper and lower parts of marine terrace deposits distributed in the Sanha-dong and Jeongja-dong, Ulsan areas. Based on the morphological features of glass shards, refractive indices, major element compositions, and similarity coefficients, the upper and lower tephras were identified as AT (ca. 25 ka) and Ata (ca. 105-110 ka) tephra, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first official report of Ata tephra on terrestrial deposits in Korea. These results are expected to aidin the research of the Quaternary paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, and active faults in the southeastern part of Korea.

  • There is a limestone basin surrounded by the mountains consisted of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in the Masung, Munkyung city, Kyungsangpook do. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the geomorphic processes of the gentle hillslopes in the marginal piedmont of Masung basin. To do so, I analyzed deposits over hillslopes and the relation ship between the distance from the divide and the height(above sea level) at the longitudinal profile of the hillslope, and considered interrelation between the distributions of the gentle hillslopes(less than 230m) and lithology. Geomorphic processes of Masung basin are as follow: (1) The depth of deposits over hillslope increases toward downstream of the hillslope. Most gravels within deposits, whose lithology is limestone, are those eroded at the boundary(overthrust fault zone) between the back-mountain and the hillslope. Deposits at the outward margin of hillslope is well sorted. and moderately imbricated. (2) Hillslope at the margin of the basin(160-230m asl) is formed by the action of 'the flow with channel'. At the boundary between the soft rock(limestone; basin floor) and hard rock(sedimentary and metamorphic rock; back-mountain), the relatively weak limestone is eroded to fresh bedrock by the subsequent action of the overland flow, and therefore discontinuity in slope appeared. (3) After hills lopes were formed, sediments(boulders and fine material) produced during dissection in back-mountain buried deposits over hillslope. In conclusion, geomorphic processes of Masung basin is 'differential erosion due to differentiation of lithological hardness' having suggested as geomorphic processes of granitic basin. However it is not 'removal of weathering material due to sheetflow' but 'erosion due to the overland flow with channel'.

  • Resistivity surveys can identify the distribution of geological units and structures (including fragmented fault zones), the extent of weathered and modified geological strata, and the characteristics of groundwater. This study aims to analyze the underground sedimentary layers and geological structures near the Nari and Albong Basins of Ulleung-do, Korea, focusing on six survey lines to identify the spatial trends in subsurface resistivity. A modified dipole array method (D method) was employed, combining resistivity results obtained by existing dipole array methods (A and C methods). The modified method provides optimal analysis of the cross-section of underground resistivity, and shows a clear boundary between a low-resistivity zone (${\leq}500{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) of sedimentary layers and weak zones, and a high-resistivity zone (${\geq}5,000{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) of volcanic rock (trachyandesite). The estimated average thickness of the sedimentary layers is 50~100 m for the Albong Basin and 100~200 m for the Nari Basin. An anomaly zone, different from the weak zone in the bedrock, is identified as a caldera fault, and the low-resistivity zone extends from the surface down to the lowest survey depths.

  • In this study, a surface geological survey was first conducted to investigate aggregate resources in the Yeongam area of Jeollanam-do, and a drilling survey was conducted in the lower part of the surface, which was difficult to identify through a surface geological survey, to determine the spatial distribution of aggregates. Drilling sites were selected considering the topographical development and Quaternary alluvium characteristics of the study area, and river aggregate drilling surveys were conducted at a total of 5 points and land aggregate drilling surveys were conducted at a total of 28 points. Borehole core sediments were classified into seven sedimentary units to determine whether they could be used as aggregates, and optically stimulated luminescence dating was performed on representative boreholes to measure the depositional period for each sedimentary unit. As a result of the study, most of the Yeongam area had a very wide river basin, so it was estimated that there would be a large amount of aggregate, but the amount of aggregate was evaluated to be very small compared to other cities and counties. Most of the unconsolidated sedimentary layers in the Yeongam area are composed of blue-grey marine clay with a vertical thickness of more than 10 m. The sand-gravel layer corresponding to the aggregate section is distributed in the lower part of the marine clay, thinly covering the bedrock weathering zone. This is because the amount of aggregates themselves is small and most of the aggregates are distributed at a depth of 10 m below the surface, which is currently difficult to develop, so the possibility of developing aggregates is evaluated to be very low. As a result of dating, it can be seen that the blue-grey marine clay layer is an intertidal sedimentary layer formed as the sea level rose rapidly about 10,000 years ago. The deposition process continued from 10,000 years ago to the present, and as a result, a very thick clay layer was deposited. This clay layer was formed very dominantly for about 6,000 to 8,000 years, and the sand-gravel layer in the section where aggregates deposited in the Pleistocene period can exist was measured to have been deposited at about 13.0 to 19.0 ka, and about 50 ka, showing that it was deposited as paleo-fluvial deposits before the marine transgression process.
