This study presents a numerical model that can simulate changes of particle size distribution (PSD) of PCB-contaminated coastal sediments. The developed model has one spatial dimension including sedimentation and vortical dispersion as well as coagulation. The reason for considering the vortical transport mechanisms is to calculate residence time of the particles. Using the model and Initial PSD data based on actual coastal sediments contaminated with PCBs, this study shows results of model simulations. Within 48 hours of the simulation time, the PSD changed significantly and the particles were removed from water in different rates between different particle sizes. It also shows that coagulation can act an important role in this process. The model may be useful in assessing the range of resuspended sediments that can pollute neighboring areas during environmental remediation projects such as dredging.
This study investigated the optimum depth for the application of bioremediation in contaminated coastal sediment using a lab scale column experiment. The biostimulants were placed in the top surface of the sediment facing seawater, 3cm, 6cm and 10cm of the depth from the surface, respectibely. During the experiment, the changes of organic pollutants and heavy metal fractions in the sediment were monitored in 1 month and 3month time intervals. The organic pollutants found during various analysis such as chemical oxygen demand, total solids and volatile solids, significantly reduced when the depth of the biostimulant was 3cm or less. In contrast, at a depth of over 6cm, the reduction of organic pollutants decreased, and the results were similar to the control. Heavy metals fractions in the sediment also changed with the depth of the biostimulants. The exchangeable fraction of the metals was quite reduced at the sediment surface in the column, but the organic bound and residual fractions considerably increased at a depth of 3cm. Based on this study, the optimum biostimulants depth for in-situ bioremediation of contaminant coastal sediment is 3cm from the sediment surface.

Particle materials sink in bottom and dissolved inorganic substances release from sediment and many kinds of materials continuously exchange in sediment and water column as well as transfer and transformation in sediment. The study of sediment quality means the state of sediment pollution relation of the water quality, sediment biota, materials fluxes between sediment and water column, transformation of materials in sediment is being important in recent. The state of sediment quality imply that the history of water pollution for long time, because the sediment quality does not change temporally. The sediment quality of bottom water can be used as a good indicator of pollution at present and in future. The major index of sediment qualities are the content of nutrients and hazard materials such as metals, Ignition Loss (IL), Total Sulfur (TS), Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), sediment COD, color, odor and the release of nutrients from sediment. However, there are some arguments between researchers about compare to estimation of sediment quality and sampling and analysis of sediment. In this study, I will introduce the method of sediment sampling, analyzing and estimating of the sediment pollution.
Extractable concentrations (0.1 N & 1.0 N HCI) of heavy metals in roadside sediments are lower than guidelines for soil recommended by Ministry of Environment. Heavy traffic areas (such as No. 7 national road) show high contents of heavy metals, especially, at curved areas, gully pot, crackdown areas on overspeed, pedestrian crossing etc. Fine fractions $(<63\;{\mu}m)$ of roadside sediments have the highest concentrations of heavy metals, but mass loadings of heavy metal are determined by coarse fractions $(>100{\mu}m)$, due to washing out of fine fraction sediment by runoff water. Proper treatment facilities are needed to control the inflow of fine roadside sediments from No. 7 national road and bridge such as Hanmul bridge.

This study investigated the changes in pore water quality of polluted sediment by mixing ratio of granulated coal ash. The mesocosm experiments were carried out with 0%, 10%, 30% and 50%, respectively, of the material mixture ratio relative to the sediments. According to the results of the experiments, pH increased depending on the mixing ratio. Phosphate and ammonia concentrations were significantly decreased in the mixing ratio of 30% and 50% compared to the control (p < 0.05). The concentration of hydrogen sulfide was reduced by 72% at the mixing ratio of 10%, and it was not detected at the mixing ratio of 30% and 50%. This study was confirmed that granulated coal ash can change the pore water quality of polluted sediments in proportion to the amount of material. However, the effect of the mixing ratio between 30% and 50% was not significantly different, thus it is concluded that mixing of 30% of the volume of the sediment is economically feasible.
The stormwater runoff from road or expressway is known as one of important nonpoint pollution sources. To reduce the pollutants discharge from road or expressway, many best management practices(BMPs) have been applied and planned. Among the BMPs, road sweeping can be effective way to prevent pollutant washoff to environment. This study is performed to evaluate the characteristics of particles collected from the road by sweeping car. Size distribution and pollutant concentration of particles were analyzed. Based on the pollutant concentration and the specification of road such as length, width, and unit for pollutant generation, total amount of pollutant to be removed by road sweeping was estimated. Most of sediments collected by road sweeping was classified into sandy soil and fraction of fine grained soil was low. Although the concentrations of pollutants such as heavy metals in road sediments did not exceed the soil contamination criteria, washout of pollutants during sweeping work by spraying water might cause leaching of pollutants contained in sediments and thus resulted in low pollutant concentrations. Reduced amounts of pollutant by road sweeping showed 31.4% TSS reduction for ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ region and 7.7% TSS for ${\triangle}{\triangle}$ region. Other pollutants showed low reduction rate, because of their leaching by water spraying. Results from this study indicate that detailed and well-planned investigation for the road sweeping is necessary for the accurate estimation of pollutant reduction from road or expressway.
The main purpose of this study is to offer informations about the current conditions and basic data of sediments for the urban streams in the Busan city. Total 14 urban streams were selected and sediment samples were collected. Then, It was investigated the sediment qualities though the measurement of pH, proximate analysis, elemental analysis, COD, organic carbon content, volatile solid content and heavy metal concentration. Results show that COD, organic carbon content, volatile solid content and heavy metal concentration of sediment are determined in the range of $1.20{\sim}75.07mg\;L^{-1}$, 0.19~11.54%, 0.23~34.21% and $0.4{\sim}732.6mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Finally, Analysis data of sediments were compared with USEPA sediment quality standards and ontario sediment quality guidelines. As a result, when compared with USEPA sediment quality standards, total 9 samples were evaluated as heavily polluted and total 3 samples were evaluated as moderately polluted. But, when compared with ontario sediment quality guidelines, total 3 samples were evaluated as Severe effect level and total 10 samples were evaluated as lowest effect level.

In this study, pollution characteristics were investigated for the Andong Dam sediments in the Nakdong River. Sediment samples were collected from the middle, left, and right points of the lake up to 40km upstream of the Andong Dam at intervals of about 5km by stratification and turnover period. In the case of nutrients and total organics such as loss of ignition, total nitrogen, and phosphorus, the degree of contamination is low, but heavy metals of arsenic and cadmium is very high. The contamination level of sediments in the dam area is higher than that of the branch of river and the control group, and concentration of chromium, copper, and lead are higher in the stratification period, and that of zinc is higher in turnover period. Arsenic, cadmium, manganese, and zinc showed contamination variation between upstream and downstream but chromium, copper, mercury, iron and lead didn't show the variation.

There is a volume change between the sediments and the dredged materials because the dredged materials is fully disturbed by the dredger and settled in the basin from the stabilized condition. The volume of the dredged materials is also affected by the coagulants and flocculants (hereafter C & F) which was used to speed up the settling of the suspended solids. In this study, the volume change of the dredged materials is analysed in detail due to the injection amount of the C & F. The dredged materials were sampled in the lagoon located in the East coastal zone, and the volume change of the samples is quantitatively analysed by the laboratory test due to the change of the clay content and the amount of the C & F. The optimal amounts of the C & F is determined by showing the minimal volume change due to C & F injection. From the experimental results, the volume of the dredged materials is increased 1.68 times on an average and the volume change rate is slightly increased, i.e., negligible, as the clay content increase in the case of the C & F injection.
