Hydraulic Characteristics of Busan Clay in the Floodplain of the Nakdong River Delta (낙동강 삼각주 범람원에서 부산점토의 수리학적 특성)

  • To predict the settlement rate of a ground area that incorporates vertical drains, it is desirable to conduct various kinds of advanced field and laboratory tests for hydraulic properties. However, it is urgently needed to appropriately evaluate the hydraulic properties using the results of conventional soil tests which are extensively used for local practice. To achieve this purpose, a number of CPT dissipation test, laboratory permeability and consolidation tests were performed at five sites in the floodplain of the Nakdong River delta, and the test data were comprehensively analyzed. As a result, it is found that the coefficients of horizontal consolidation ($C_{h,NC}$) and permeability ($k_{h,OC}$) of the clay agreed well with those of the CPT-based methods proposed by Baligh and Levadoux (1986). The values of $C_{h,NC}$ and $k_{h,OC}$ were in the range of $0.4{\sim}3.0\;cm^2/sec$ and $0.40{\sim}2.50\;cm^2/sec$, each of which slightly increases or decreases with depth, respectively. It was also inferred that these trends seem to reflect the depositional environments of the clay.

Development to Prediction Technique of Slope Hazards in Gneiss Area using Decision Tree Model (의사결정나무모형을 이용한 편마암 지역에서의 급경사지재해 예측기법 개발)

  • Based on the data obtained from field investigation and soil testing to slope hazards occurrence section and non-occurrence section in gneiss area, a prediction technique was developed by the use of a decision tree model, which is one of the statistical analysis methods. The slope hazards data of Seoul and Kyonggi Province, which were induced by heavy rainfall in 1998, were 104 sections in gneiss area. The number of data applied in developing prediction model was 61 sections except a vacant value. Among these data, the number of data occurred slope hazards was 34 sections and the number of data non-occurred slope hazards was 27 sections. The statistical analyses using the decision tree model were applied to chi-square statistics, gini index and entrophy index. As the results of analyses, a slope angle, a degree of saturation and an elevation were selected as the classification standard. The prediction model of decision tree using entrophy index is most likely accurate. The classification standard of the selected prediction model is composed of the slope angle, the degree of saturation and the elevation from the first choice stage. The classification standard values of the slope angle, the degree of saturation and elevation are $17.9^{\circ}$, 52.1% and 320 m, respectively.

A Study on the Development of Load Transfer Curves of the Driven Steel Pipe Piles by Soil (타입강관말뚝의 토질별 하중전이곡선 도출에 관한 연구)

  • As computational technologies have been developed, the load transfer analysis method using load transfer curves is widely performed. Now the load transfer analysis methods are widely used in our country. But most of the curves using in the analysis have been developed in foreign countries. In this study we gathered the data of in situ pile load tests on domestic nine sites in order to derive load transfer curves of driven steel pipe piles. Then we derived average lines of $f/f_{max}$-w/D curves for sandy and clayey soils respectively, which are expressed by hyperbolic function. And the results using these curves and the results using TZPile 2.0 (Analysis program of pile) were compared and analyzed with the results of pile load tests on domestic 3 sites in order to ascertain the applicability of the curves. The results show that the load-settlement relations using the curves in this study are more similar to the measured data and more conservative than those using TZPile 2.0.

Assessment of Runout Distance of Debris using the Artificial Neural Network (인공신경망을 이용한 사태물질 이동거리 산정)

  • This study conducted to develop an assessment method of runout distance of debris flow that is a major type of landslides in Korea. In order to accomplish the objectives, this study performed detailed field survey of runout distance and laboratory soil tests using 24 landslides over three pilot sites. Based on the data of the field survey and the laboratory tests, an assessment method of runout distance was suggested using the artificial neural network. The input data for the analysis of artificial neural network are change rate of slope angle, Permeability coefficient of in-situ soil, dry density, void ratio, volume of debris and the measured runout distance. The analyzed results using the artificial neural network show low error rate of inference distributing lower than $10\%$. Some cases have $5\%$ and $2\%$ of error rates of inferences. The results can be thought as excellent teaming rates. However, it is difficult to be accepted as excellent results if it is considered with the results derived using only 24 landslide data. Therefore, more landslide data should be surveyed and analyzed to increase the confidence in the assessment results.

  • Various kinds of reinforced soil methods have been developed by many researchers or companies for their economic merits mainly. These methods have generally used sandy soils which have high permeability as embanking or backfill material. That is because, if poor embanking materials, especially like a clayey soil which has very low permeability, are used in a reinforced soil embanking, and if excessive pore water pressure is produced by external factors, the friction resistance between reinforcing members and Boils decrease, as a result possible damage or collapse of the body of a reinforced embankment. In fact, clayey Boils can also be used as a embanking materials with reinforcement which has high permeable capacity, and are expected to be able to dissipate the excess pore water pressure effectively. In this study reinforcing effects have been examined through a serries of direct shear tests in which clayey soils are reinforced with nonwoven geotextiles of which permeability is very high and tensile strength is relatively weaker than geogrids which are usually used in reinforced soil wall. Even though such nonwoven geotextile are used as reinforcement of high saturated clayey soils. the test results show the possibility that nonwoven geoteztiles could be used as a reinforcement for reinforced soil walls effectively.

Anti-oxidative and Anti-hyperglycemia Effects of Dung Beetle Extracts on the High Fat Diet SD Rats (고지방식이로 유발한 흰쥐에서 쇠똥구리 추출물의 항산화 효과 및 혈당강하에 미치는 영향)

  • Dung beetle (Catharsius molossus, CA) is a well-known group of insects thanks to their exploitation of animal feces, a behavioral trait with a global impact on earth′s ecosystems. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of CA extract on a high-fat diet in SD rats. Male rats were divided into 5 groups. Animals were fed on a high-fat diet for seven weeks before and dung beetle extract for a month during the administration. Weight gain was decreased in ethanol extract from CA group. Administration of CA extract reduced the organ weight of testis and kidney, and adipose tissue weight. Lipid oxidative stress was evaluated measuring malondialdehyde level in liver. There were no significant differences in groups. Protein oxidative stress was evaluated measuring protein carbonyl content in blood. The protein carbonyl in blood was significantly decreased in ethanol and acetone extracted dung beetle groups (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the protein carbonyl in hepatocyte was not significant among the groups. Fibronectin and laminin by using D-HUVEC cell in vitro were measured by ELISA assay. There was significance in CA extract. The level of IL-10, IL-1β, VEGF, eNOS was evaluated by ELISA. There was significance in IL-10 compared to control (p<0.05). SOD and GPx tended to increase by CA extract. Furthermore, CAT was increased significantly by CA extract (p<0.05). After administration of CA extracts the composition of saturated fatty acid in adipose tissue tend to decrease, while unsaturated fatty acid increases. In conclusion, dung beetle had anti-hyperglycemia effects of oxidative stress and antioxidant activity.

  • When this experiment was treated with various factors of times and vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation in order to search for the effect on the growth of rice-plant and ti's amount of havestr, the following results were obtained during the period of this study. 1. Temperature was high, precipitution during nuturitive growing period, was suitable and Much rainfull, scanty sunlight during reproductive growing period and especially during decrease-sementation period, the cultivative situation of rice-plant of 1968 was almost similar to that of mean year. 2. It was found out that the quality of irrigated water used in the experioment was due to ti's neutural acidity. 3. The soil used in each experimental section was good for fertiligation and similar to the quality of general soil according to the result of soil analysis. 4. It was generally found out that the earlier times of intermittent irrigating and the longer vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation, the worse the growing condition of segmentation period was. 5. When vacant intervals of suspension of water supply were longer, the begining of being in ear of rice-plant ant the time tended to be late about one day. 6. In the view of the growth of maturity period and the amount of intermittent irrigation, it tended to be that the length of stalk of rice-plant was short when time of intermittent irrigation began earlier and the length of ear which came from any various section was not different. When times intermittent of irrigation began gradually early, the number of ears, grains and the weight of grains tended to decrease depending on times of that. All the growing of rice-plant and the amount of havesty tended to decrease, depending on which vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation were long. Finally, it was founedt out that from the point of view of the statistical analysis of weight of grains, it was more then 1% what highly significance of mutual action between times and vacant intermittent irrigation was researched.

Considerations on ground preparation for the Gimhae Bonghwang-dong Ruins (김해 봉황동 유적 대지조성에 대한 소고(小考))

  • The Bonghwang-dong ruins in Gimhae, the central area of Geumgwan Gaya, is presumed to be the site of the royal palace, and excavations have been in progress at the Gaya National Cultural Heritage Research Institute. According to a research conducted by lowering the level to the base layer on the north side of the site, mostly shell layers composed of oysters were confirmed, and soil composed of different material was alternately filled in to form a site construction. In other words, it can be seen that there was work at the site of the Bonghwang-dong ruins that required large-scale labor, such as building ramparts and embankments. There is stratigraphic confusion such as showing different age values in the same shell layer through a chronological analysis of organic matter and charcoal in the sedimentary layer, and deriving a result value in the upper layer ahead of the lower layer. In addition, open-sea diatoms are observed not only in the sedimentary layers, but also the pits. Therefore, it is judged that the soil constituting the ruins was brought from the outside. The Bonghwang-dong ruins are located inside the commonly called Bonghwang earthen ramparts, where many excavation organizations conducted research within the estimated range of the earthen fortifications. As a result, it was found that it was similar to the sedimentary layers of the ruins of the Three Kingdoms Period, which were investigated along with the ruins of Bonghwang-dong. Through this, the surrounding ruins, including those of Bonghwang-dong, were located close to paleo-Gimhae Bay, so it is believed that the soil brought from the surroundings was used to reinforce the ground. As a result of the excavation research on the Bonghwang-dong ruins conducted so far, it was found by sedimentary layer analysis and soil experiments that the ruins were created on stable land. Relics excavated in the sediments of the ruins and carbon dating data show that Bonghwang-dong carried out large-scale civil construction work in the 4th century to build the site, which clearly shows the status of Geumgwan Gaya.

Soil Analysis on Prediction of Consolidation Settlement in Marine Clays (항만점토(港灣粘土)의 압밀심하량(壓密沈下量) 예측(預測)을 위(爲)한 토질분석(土質分析))

  • This study was performed in order to contemplate their correlations between physical and mechanical properties of the marine clays which were collected from main harbors in Korea. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Most of the soils in experimental districts consist of CH. CL. and ML. and they are considered to be still proceeding. 2. The equations of the relationship between compression index and liquid limit are as, follows: CH : $C_c=0.0137$ (LL-22.60) CL : $C_c=0.0123$ (LL-14.64) 3. The relationship between compression index and initial void ratio appears that the higher the plasticity, the easier the slope of the regression line. The equations are as follows : CH : $C_c=0.431$ ($e_o-0.504$) CH : $C_c=0.471$ ($e_o-0.235$) ML : $C_c=0.641$ ($e_o-0.393$) 4. The equations of the relationship between compression index and natural water content are as follows: CH : $C_c=0.0133$ ($W_n-28.27$) CL : $C_c=0.0225$ ($W_n-23.56$) ML : $C_c=0.0106$ ($W_n-16.42$) 5. The relationship between initial void ratio and natural water content, and compression index is highly positive correlation and the equations are as follows : CH : $C_c=0.301$ ($e_o+0.017W_n-1.05$) CL : $C_c=0.141$ ($e_o+0.0567W_n-1.054$) ML : $C_c=0.421$ ($e_o+0.0214W_n-1.121$) 6. The equations of the relationship between initial void ratio and liquid limit, and compression index are as follows : CH : $C_c=0.36$ ($e_o+0.08LL-0.819$) CL : $C_c=0.269$ ($e_o+0.026LL-0.929$) 7. The cohesion of marine clays is no concerned with the increment of depth. The equations of relationship between cohesion and unconfined compression strength are as follows. CH : qu=1.896C+0.0107 CL : qu=1.849C+0.04.
