  • Landcover map can use to establish basic national environment policy as main data predicting living place, counting pollution like a atmosphere, water and forest part. During the 1998-2005 years, Korean government made landcover maps using satellite image for part of south Korea. Landcover maps are offered free for public purpose to university and institute. So, it used basic data for policy and research parts. There are some problems for application parts because of inconsistency. So, in this study, to estimate accuracy of source data by quality checking for landcover maps. As a result, there are some errors like classification inconsistencies. So, it need verification process for landcover maps.

  • Spectral pattern recognition techniques are most used in classification of remotely sensed data. Yet, in any real image, adjacent pixels are related, because imaging sensors acquire significant portions of energy from adjacent pixels. And, with the continued improvement in the spatial resolution of remote sensing systems, another spatial pattern recognition approach is must considered. In this study, we aim to show the potentiality of spatial classification methods through comparing the accuracies of spectral classification methods and those of spectral classification methods. By the comparisons between the two methods, classification accuracies of 6 different spatial classification methods are higher than that of spectral classification method by 2-6% or so. Additionally, we can show it statistically through the classification experiments with different band combinations.

  • This study compared the influence of water quality according to the data sources of spatial information. Firstly, land cover map was constructed through image classification of Daecheong-dam basin and the accuracy of image classification from satellite image showed high as 88.76% in comparison with the large-scaled land cover map in Ministry of Environment, to calculate Event Mean Concentration (EMC) by land cover that impact on the evaluation of nonpoint source pollutant loads. Also curve number and direct runoff were calculated by spatial overlay with soil map and land cover map from image classification. And Seokcheon and Daecheong-Dam basin showed high in the analysis of curve number and direct runoff. Samgacheon-Joint and Sokcheon-Downstream basin showed high in the nonpoint source pollutant loads of BOD from direct runoff and EMC. And Samgacheon-Joint and Bonghwangcheon- Downstream basin showed high in the nonpoint source pollutant loads of TN and TP. Nonpoint source pollutant loads from image classification were compared with those by the land cover map from Ministry of Environment to present the effectivity of nonpoint source pollutant loads from satellite image. And Daecheong-Dam Upstream basin showed high as 10.64%, 11.70% and 20.00% respectively in the errors of nonpoint source pollutant loads of BOD, TN, and TP. Therefore, it is desirable that spatial information including with paddy and dry field is applied to the evaluation of nonpoint source pollutant loads in order to simulate water quality of basin effectively.

  • To understand urban space and make appropriate plans, the integrative analyses considering road and land use simultaneously are required. In addition, studies that involve both horizontal and vertical spaces must be taken into consideration. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conduct a classification analysis of road network-based land use considering spatial structure. The methods of this study were as follows; first, a space syntax theory considering the structure of road network was introduced for roads. For land use, to consider both horizontal and vertical development densities of residential and commercial buildings were used. And the explanatory power of three variables-Euclidean distance, global integration and length-reflected global integration-were compared. Third, based on road as an appropriate variable, modified-IPA was conducted with land use and the results were categorized into four areas. The proposed method was applied to Gangnam-gu, a CBD area in Seoul, and results were analyzed and visualized using GIS.

  • This study investigated the land-cover changes in the tidal flat of the Taean peninsula due to man-made environmental changes between 1972 and 2008, through time-series analysis based on a modified post-classification comparison method and multi-temporal satellite images. The analysis revealed that the land-cover of the tidal flat has changed from tidal flat to wetland and from wetland to paddy field between 1972 and 2008. Also, the pattern of detailed land-cover changes is as follows: tidal flat to wetland; lake and saltpan to bare land and paddy field. The accurate classification of each image is needed for the application of the post-classification comparison method. The overall accuracy of the classified images was found to be 95.33% on average, and the Kappa value was 0.941 on average.

  • Since remotely sensed images of coastal wetlands are very sensitive to spatial resolution, it is very important to select an optimum resolution for particular geographic phenomena needed to be represented. Scale is one of the most important factors in spatial analysis techniques, which is defined as a spatial and temporal interval for a measurement or observation and is determined by the spatial extent of study area or the measurement unit. In order to acquire the optimum scale for a particular subject (i.e., coastal wetlands), measuring and representing the characteristics of attribute information extracted from the remotely sensed images are required. This study aims to explore and analyze the scale effects of attribute information extracted from remotely sensed coastal wetlands images. Specifically, it is focused on identifying the effects of scale in response to spatial resolution changes and suggesting a methodology for exploring the optimum spatial resolution. The LANDSAT TM image of Sunchon Bay was classified by a supervised classification method, Six land cover types were classified and the Kappa index for this classification was 84.6%. In order to explore the effects of scale in the classification procedure, a set of images that have different spatial resolutions were created by a aggregation method. Coarser images were created with the original image by averaging the DN values of neighboring pixels. Sixteen images whose resolution range from 30 m to 480 m were generated and classified to obtain land cover information using the same training set applied to the initial classification. The values of Kappa index show a distinctive pattern according to the spatial resolution change. Up to 120m, the values of Kappa index changed little, but Kappa index decreased dramatically at the 150m. However, at the resolution of 240 m and 270m, the classification accuracy was increased. From this observation, the optimum resolution for the study area would be either at 240m or 270m with respect to the classification accuracy and the best quality of attribute information can be obtained from these resolutions. Procedures and methodologies developed from this study would be applied to similar kinds and be used as a methodology of identifying and defining an optimum spatial resolution for a given problem.
