  • This study was conducted to find out the optimum ranges of soil physical properties for red pepper growth by characterizing the relationship of soil physical properties and plant growth. Various environmental factors and soil physico-chemical properties and red pepper growth were investigated at 94 farmers fields in red pepper-growing area. Soil texture of the red pepper fields were mainly coarse loamy covering 72% of surveyed fields. Available soil depth, plowing layer and root zone were deeper, but bulk density and hardness of soils were lower in the area where red pepper grew well. The optimum ranges of soil three phases were identified as the solid phase below 50%, liquid phase above 10% and sir phase above 20%. The various soil physical properties were closely related with plant growth of red pepper which were highly influenced in order of available depth>bulk density>plowing layer>hardness>slope.

  • Soil erosion is one of the most serious problems in alpine upland in Korea. Soil fertility has continuously decreased due to serious soil erosion. To increase soil fertility, new sources of organic matter should be inputted. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to select winter cover crop as new sources of organic matter and to investigate the effect of winter cover crop on soil property changes, major crop productivity (Chinese cabbage, potato) production in highland, and disease occurrence with different cropping systems. Among 17 candidates for winter coverage crop, rye was most suitable due to it's soil covering rate, and over-wintering rate. The optimum sowing period for rye ranged from late August to late September. Soil porosity and organic matter content increased with rye cultivation. Rye cultivation during winter increased amounts of crop (both Chinese cabbage and potato) productivity up to 8%. There was little difference on amount of crop productivity depending on cropping systems such as monoculture (Chinese cabbage or potato) and Chinese cabbage-potato rotation.

  • This study was designed to obtain the mean values of thirteen soil physico-chemical properties for different paddy soil management groups, and to serve the basic information for improving the soil using amendments. Computerized data on the results of detailed soil survey were used in this study. The clay contents in the B horizon of paddy soil management groups were 28.3% in the well adapted type, 11.8% in the sandy textured type, and 26.8% in the newly reclaimed type. Soil pH of B horizon in the paddy soil management groups except poorly drained type and acid sulfate type were higher than those of A horizon. In the river side paddy soils of well adapted type, the clay contents of A and B horizons were 16.8%, 23.1%, respectively, and soil organic matter contents of those horizons were 42g/kg, 18g/kg, respectively. And also available phosphate content of well adapted type was higher than the other types. Frequency of distribution of soil organic matter content levels in the B horizons of sandy textured type and newly reclaimed type were higher in the organic matter content range of below 10g/kg. And those of well adapted, poorly drained, and saline type were higher in the organic matter content range of 10~20g/kg. Correlation coefficients between 13 variables in the B horizon of well adapted type were all highly significant at 1% or 5% level, respectively.

  • Variation of soil characteristics and purity were examined within mapping unit and estimates were given for the number of samples required to reach predetermined levels of accuracy for black soil, VDBr. soil, DBr. soil, and brown soil in Jeju. Variation of chemical properties except pH and CEC was higher than that of physical properties. Brown soil showed the lowest variation and hence required the smallest sample size. The soils examined were correctly classified with regard to brown soil at purity 74.1, to DBr. soil 60.8, to black soil 55.6, and to VDBr. soil 46.9%. Sample calculation was presented which showed approximate sample sizes required to detect the difference of 10 and 20% of the mean with 0.95 confidence level.

  • BACKGROUND: Gypsum($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) is known as an ideal amendment to improve soil quality of the reclaimed coastal land. Since gypsum has very high concentration of electron acceptor like ${SO_4}^{2-}$, its application might be effective on reducing $CH_4$ emission during rice cultivation, but its effect has not been studied well. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of gypsum on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which was packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Chemical-grade gypsum was applied in two soils having EC 2.25 and 9.48 dS/m at rates of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%(wt/wt). $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increasing salt accumulation and gypsum application levels. With increasing gypsum application, dissolved ${SO_4}^{2-}$ concentration in the leachate water was significantly increased, which might have suppressed $CH_4$ production in soil. Total $CH_4$ flux was dramatically decreased with increasing gypsum application. In contrast, rice yield was increased with increasing gypsum application and then achieved maximum productivity at 1.0% gypsum application in two soils. CONCLUSION(s): Gypsum is a very good soil amendment to suppress $CH_4$ emission in reclaimed coastal paddy soils, and improve rice productivity and soil properties. The optimum application level of gypsum is assumed at ca. 1% to improve soil productivity with reducing effectively $CH_4$ emission during rice cultivation.

  • Sixty two natural habitats of Korean lespedeza (Lespedeza stipulacea Maxim) were investigated to obtain basic data on the plant growth and the soil physico-chemical properties such as pH, mineral elements, organic matter content, soil separats and texture. Analyzed results can be summarized as follows. 1. Plant height and dry matter yield of the samples higher in late August and early September, although they varied greatly depending on the sampling date and location. 2. The plant shoot should higher contents of N, P, K. Ca and Mn than root and the plant root was higher in Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn contents than shoot. 3. Soil pH and Ca content of the natural habitats were higher, but the contents of P$_2$O$_{5}$, K, Mg, Na and organic matter were lower than those of the average soil in Korea. The soil texture of natural habitats showed much higher portion of sand and extremely low portion of silt and clay 4. Korean lespedeza is well adapted to soils so low in fertility and organic matter that other crops and most weed fail. also it appears to thrive on the loamy sands, sandy loams of the piedmont region and on similar soils with variously physico-chemical properties.

  • A simplified one-dimensional model STELLA was used to predict soil water movement in lllinois corn fields using soil water balance sheets. It offered the potential to increase understanding of soil nitrate and agrochemical leaching process. The model accounted for aU possible annual inputs and outputs of water from a closed ecosystem as represented by corn fields. Water inputs included precipitation, while outputs included runoff, transpiration, evaporation and drainage. To run the model required daily inputs of two climatic data measurements such as daily precipitation and pan evaporation. Vertical water flow through the soil profile was calculated with first order equation including the difference in hydraulic conductivity and matric potential at the various soil types. The output results included daily changes of water content in the soil layers and daily amount of water losses including run-off, percolation, transpiration. This model was verified using Illinois corn field data for the soil water content measured by neutron scattering methods through 1992 to 1994 growing seasons. Approximately 22 to 78% of simulated water contents agreed with the measured values and their standard deviation, depending on soil types, whereas 30 to 70% of simulated water values agreed with the measured values and their standard deviations depending on soil layers.

  • The river-bed sediments from the major river basins were analysed for the chemical and physical properties to evaluate environmental safety for the agricultural uses. The samples were taken from 16 sites of Han river, 36 of Geumgang river, 27 of Yeongsan river, and 140 of Nakdong river. The total of 219 samples from the 28 counties were taken from the surface of the sediments at the depth of 50 cm. The particle density of the sediments was greater than $2.63Mg\;m^{-3}$ and the whole range of the density was $2.60{\sim}2.69Mg\;m^{-3}$, the average particle size was 0.7 mm whereas the size range was 0.075~0.85 mm. The analyses of the particle sizes by basins showed that Han and Geumgang river had particle sizes of 0.075~0.85 mm, while Geumgang and Yeongsan river had particle sizes of 0.25~0.85 mm. Geumgang and Yeongsan river tended to have greater particle sizes. The average values of the chemical properties were 6.3 for pH, $0.16dS\;m^{-1}$ for EC, $8g\;kg^{-1}$ for organic matter, $101mg\;kg^{-1}$ for available phosphate, 0.39, 3.47, and $0.93cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium respectively. The greatest property at each basin was pH for Han river, Ec, available phosphate and exchangeable sodium for Geumgang river, organic matter, exchangeable calcium and magnesium for Yeongsan river, and exchangeable potassium for Nakdong river.
