  • The objectives of this study were to compare soil physical and chemical properties and early growth of Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi seedlings in harvested Larix kaempferi and Pinus rigida stands. Study stands were located in harvested L. kaempferi (Yeongju) and Pinus rigida (Wonju) plantations. Seedlings of L. kaempferi (1-1) and P. densiflora (1-0) were planted in April, 2008, Yeongju. Also, seedlings of L. kaempferi (1- 1) and P. densiflora (1-1) were planted with the density of 3,000 seedlings/ha in April, 2010, Wonju. We analyzed soil physical and chemical properties and the relative growth rate of seedlings using diameter at root collar and seedling height. Soil organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus concentrations in harvested P. rigida stand were significantly higher than those in harvested L. kaempferi stand. The relative growth rate of P. densiflora seedlings with former stands were not significantly different. The relative growth rate of diameter at root collar of L. kaempferi seedling in harvested P. rigida stands were significantly higher than that in harvested L. kaempferi stand. Higher concentrations of organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus in harvested P. rigida stand was probably positively affect to the early growth of seedlings.

  • Samples from soils and crops were collected and analyzed in order to investigate the interactions of selenium among rocks, soils, and crops by hydrothermal alteration near epithermal mines in the region of Mio-san, Haenam. Soil samples included 6 samples each from mountain and farm area and compositional minerals and their contents were analyzed by water content, pH, ICP, XRD, XRF. Crop samples from onion and scallion were analyzed for chemical composition to elucidate the relationship with soils. Results from XRD analysis for soil samples showed that major compositional minerals are qualtz and feldspar, and illite, chlorite, hematite formed by hydrothermal alteration were included on a small scale. The pH ranges of soil samples from mountain and farm were measured at 4.6~4.9 and 5.2~6.7, respectively. The higher pH in farm soils may result from fertilization during agricultural activities. Results from ICP analysis showed that, compared to soil samples from mountain area with no potassium and calcium, significant amount of K and Ca were detected in soil samples from farms which is affected by fertilization. In a similar manner, potassium and calcium were absorbed and detected in crop samples at relatively high concentrations (116.89~169.79 ppm for K and 20.18~32.29 ppm for Ca). While the selenium contents in soil samples ranged from 18.35 ppb to 70.31 ppb which showed no significant difference, high concentrations of selenium were detected in onion (119.48~179.50 ppb) and scallion (146.65 ppb). These difference in enrichment for each element may result from the distinctive adsorption characteristics depending on crops.

  • Soil samples collected from paddy field adjacent to zinc-mining sites were sequentially extracted to assess chemical fractions of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb. The purpose of this study was two fold; (i) to examine the chemical forms of heavy metal in soils by sequential extraction. and (ii) to determine relationships between the chemical distribution of heavy metal in the soil and the heavy metal content of the brown rice. The results are summarized as follows. The content of exchangeable, organically bound and carbonate Cd and residual Zn was 73.9% and 63.8% of total Cd and Zn in the soil, respectively. The content of exchangeable Cd, Zn and Pb in soil showed highly negative correlations with pH, organically bound Cd, carbonate Cd, sulfide Cd, Zn and Pb in soil showed highly positive correlations with pH. The content of organically bound Cd, Zn, Pb and carbonate Cu in soil showed highly positive correlations with organic matter content, while the content of sulfide Cu and residual Cd in soil showed highly negative correlation with organic matter content. The content of carbonate Cd, Zn, Pb and residual Cu in soil showed highly positive correlations with CEC, but the content of exchangeable Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb and organically bound Cu in soil showed highly negative correlations with CEC. The content of total, organically bound, carbonate, sulfide and residual Cd in soil were highly correlated with that of Cd in brown rice. The content of any Pb fractions in soil were not correlated with that of Pb in brown rice. The content of water soluble and exchangeable Zn in soil were highly correlated with that of Zn in brown rice.

  • For the success of future missions to the Moon and other similar cosmic environments, understanding and utilization of the lunar regolith has become essential. However, due to the scarcity and unaffordability of real lunar regolith on Earth, a number of lunar regolith simulants (e.g., JSC-1; NASA) have been developed for experimental purposes. However, Korea does not have its own lunar regolith, even though the country is planning to actively pursue lunar and space missions in the 2020s. Thus, this study has been conducted to develop a Korean lunar simulant prototype via basic feasibility attempts (e.g., raw material selection, particle size and chemical composition simulation). Finally, the first prototype of Korea's own lunar simulant has been obtained, and denominated as KLS-1.

  • Effects of surface defect on thermal stability and stress crack resistance of high density polyethylene geomembranes in environmental conditions were examined by comparing the mechanical properties, chemical resistance and failure times of geomembranes between defective cases under different temperatures. Artificial surface defects were added to the surface of geomembranes by scratch apparatus designed specially. The number of surface defects was increased with the smaller size of scratch induced particles, and the more scratch addition numbers at the shear rate of scratch induced mechanism, 100mm/min. The tensile strength were decreased but the tensile strain was increased with the above conditions. In chemical resistance of defective geomembranes, the tensile strength were decreased but the tensile strain was increased with the longer immersion period and the higher temperature under the same scratch induced conditions. Finally, failure times of defective geomembranes by ESCR test were shifted to the shorter time ranges by increasing temperatures.

  • We investigated hydrochemical and stable isotope characteristics of groundwater in a large agricultural plain, the Honam plain, to evaluate the adequacy of agricultural water supply. For preliminary assessment for the area, we collected 23 groundwater samples from domestic wells and conducted hydrochemical and water stable isotope analysis. Groundwater in the study area is mainly Ca-HCO3 type resulting from water-rock interactions. Stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions indicated that recharge water is derived from precipitation while some sampling sites had evaporation signatures. Irrigation water quality using sodium absorption ratio and salinity hazard showed most of the groundwater samples were found to be suitable for irrigation. The groundwater in the southwestern part of the study area was affected by both seawater intrusion and agricultural activities, indicating a higher possibility of groundwater contamination near the coastal areas. Elevated concentrations of nitrate and phosphate ions in the groundwater are considered to be influenced by anthropogenic activities such as fertilizer application. It is expected that this study would be able to provide preliminary information on groundwater quality for agricultural water supply in the Mangyeong-Dongjin watershed.

  • It was proven that rice straw can serve can serve as a good support medium for trickling filter with livestock wastewater treatment. The efficiency of removal of removal of environmentally undesirable components from the wastewater by the straw medium was no less inferior to other commonly used support materials. The treated straw was also proven to be a source of abundant plant nutrients. The growth of orchard grass was enhanced greatly by the application of large quantity of the support medium. A maximum yield of dry matter was obtained at the rate of 40 ton/ha. Inorganic NPK elements as background fertilizers were highly recommended for better development in an early stage of growth. The nutritional status of the soil was very much improved by the addition of the medium in terms of exchangeable cations(K, Ca, Mg and Na), available phosphate, and organic matter contents. Nutrient uptake by orchard grass such as N, P and cations was enhanced by rice straw medium treatment and that was proportional to the levels of treatment.

  • In this study, spatial analyses of chemical properties were studied to find inter-relation among these properties from 5 year old general paddy field after arable land rearrangement and remodeled paddy field near 4 river project. In addition, comparison of spatial variations between two paddy fields was performed to characterize paddy fields by different formation and provide interpretation of these variations and parameters (Semivariogram and Kriging) from spatial analyses. Total of 400 ($20{\times}20$) soil samples were taken at 5 m interval from 1 ha of 5 year old general paddy field and analyzed. Total number of 54 ($6{\times}9$) soil samples were taken from remodeled paddy fields at 10m interval for the analyses. The results of pH, available Phosphate and organic matter among the analyzed results were used for interpretation. The pH values were relatively high from Gumi region. The values of available Phosphate and organic matter showed greater variant coefficients and this represented that there were greater heterogeneity in available phosphate and organic matter distributions across one paddy field. The values of skewness and kurtosis as absolute values, showed almost normal distributions. The paddy field in Ansung had available Phosphate (72.8) ${\fallingdotseq}$ pH (73.8) and greater values of organic matter (159.3), while upland in Gumi had the range value of organic (6.5) < available Phosphate (33.5) < pH (46.6). Based on these results, younger soils (0 year old) require more sampling to characterize the whole field than 5 year old soils.

  • The objective of this study was investigated the effect of organic fertilizer(OF) application on the grain yield, protein content, and soil chemical properties in rice cultivation to evaluate the replacement ratio of OF based on basal fertilization of inorganic(nitrogen) fertilizer, In case of soil 1 with optimum range of organic matter for rice growth, the grain yield of rice in 70% and 100% treatments of OF were higher than the other treatments. In soil 2 with higher than the optimum range of soil organic matter, the grain yield of rice of NPK, 30%, 70%, 100%, and 300% treatments of OF showed no significant difference. When the protein criteria of rice quality was below 7%, the treatment of 30%, 70%, and 100% using OF in soil 1 were satisfied with protein criteria of rice. In case of soil 1, ammonium nitrogen content, electrical conductivity, and the organic matter in 30%, 70%, 100%, 300% treatments of OF showed similar tendency to NPK treatment. These results suggested that the substitution ratio of OF 70~100% could be appropriate to increase the yield and commercial quality for rice.
