  • In order to use of new organic matter source, soil samples collected from paddy, upland and orchard treated with kraft and paper board mill sludge were analysed comparing with non-treated soil in view of some soil properties, soil microorganisms and soil enzyme activities. Also, the value of fertilizer was estimated with kraft and paper board mill sludge. 1. Paper mill sludge showed more than 55% of organic matter content, and higher total nitrogen and phosphorus, and CEC. 2. Soils treated with kraft sludge were higher contents than non-treated 2.5-3 for organic matter, 1.5-2 for total-nitrogen, 2 for $NO_3$-N, 1.5 for phosphorus and 1.4 times for CEC. Also, 12-1.9 for bacteria and 3 times for fungi, and 1.4-1.5 of cellulase, 1.5-1.8 of phosphatase and 1.5-1.8 times of urease activities. 3. Organic matter contents, number of fungi, and activities of cellulase and phosphatase in soil treated with paper board sludge were 1.4-22, 2.4, 1.5-1.6 and 1.3-1.4 times higher than non-treated soil, respectively. 4. Paper mill sludge was evaluated as a good organic matter source to increase of soil organic matter, CEC, inorganic components, soil microbes and enzyme activities.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of trampling on the changes in soil and vegetation around the trails. The study areas were established both on the trails and in the forested areas located in Ui and Jeongnung valleys at Pukhansan National Park. Soil core sampling, measurements of vegetations and counts of persons visited per hour were done during the period from April 6 to October 9, 1986. The physical properties of soils became better with increasing distances from the trail, and the best conditions were observed in the forested areas. The differences were not significant among the zones within the trailside. More number of individuals and basal area (or coverage) in woody plants were observed in the forested areas than at trailsides. For the herb layer, however, more number of individuals and coverage were shown at the trailside. In the Ui valley, the quantitative measures of herbaceous plants decreased as the bulk density and penetration resistance increased. In the Jeongnung valley, however, only bulk density was negatively related to the quantitative measures. The fact that there were poor relations between soil factors and quantitative measures of herbaceous plants in Jeongnung valley might be influenced by other factors rather than soil compaction. Thus, more research would be needed to understand the critical factors affecting the vegetational changes in recreation areas.

  • The current study aimed to review the research trends on forest liming by age, country, and research topics, and seeks to summarize the effects of forest liming on soil, vegetation and water system in forest ecosystems. The recent goals of forest liming have been changed in response to changes in the acid deposition, and related studies have been mainly carried out in Europe and North America, where there is noted a massive forest decline, which was subsequently caused by acid rain. Most forest liming studies are noted to have focused on soil responses, however, the number of studies on the responses of vegetation and water system according to a literature review on the subject were relatively small. Meanwhile, forest liming influenced whole forest ecosystems through interaction between the soil, vegetation and water system as associated with the relevant regions. The changes in soil pH, base saturation, and cation exchange capacity by forest liming were noted as different depending on the soil layer and elapsed time after liming. The responses of vegetation to forest liming were shown in above- and below-ground plant growth and plant nutrient concentration, and also were noted to have varied depending on the available regional plant species and noted specific soil conditions. The chemical properties of the water system were changed similarly to those in the soil, leading to notable changes as seen in the planktons and available fish species in the region. Finally, these results could be used to plan further studies on forest liming, which would significantly benefit regional studies to promote the preservation of the species noted for protection in the region.

  • Soil characteristics and crop productivity was compared between 5 soil physical treatment plots: check, reversion, subsoiling, explosive subsoiling and drainage in salt accumulated Gangseo Fine sandy loam soil from 1999 to 2000. Physical treatments of subsoil improved soil physical properties in the following order, reversion > drainage > explosive subsoiling > subsoiling > check. The effectiveness of physical treatment was sustained to the 2nd year after treatment. Soil moisture content of subsoil was highest in the reversion treatments and decreased in the order of drainage, subsoiling, and check. However there was little difference between treatments. The physical treatments increased fluctuation of soil moisture content. However the crop yield in the physical treatment plots were increased. It was considered that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than soil water holding in the soil. An average increase rate of crop yield by physical treatments was 10 to 20 percent.

  • Soil surface charge which manipulates some important soil physico-chemical properties such as nutrient and water holding abilities, colloidal stability and soil erosion was investigated in wide range of soil pH, using soils developed originally from same volcanic ash deposit but under different rainfall condition in Hawaii. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. Ustollic Camorthid (Kawaihae soil) which was developed under the lowest rainfall (less than 500 mm/yr) revealed low Z.P.C. (4.5-5.0) and less dependence of net charge on concentration of indifferent electrolytes. 2. Typic Hydrandepts (Akaka and Hilo soils) which were developed under the high rainfall (3050-7600 mm/yr) showed the Z.P.C. in between 5.5-7.0 and high dependence of net charge on concentration of indifferent electroytes. 3. It was found by X-ray diffraction together with total chemical analysis that amorphous materials were dominant (above 6.0%) in Typic Hydrandepts while dehydrated halloy-site (1 : 1 clay minerals) was dominant (45-50%) in Ustollic Camorthid. 4. In spite of little difference in particle size distribution of the soils, the difference of specific surface area was remarkable showing the order of Akaka (289) > Hilo (268) > Kawaihae (93). 5. It was evident, taking account of apparent field pH values, 5.2 of Akaka, 5.5 of Hilo and 7.0 of Kawaihae soil, respectively, that Akaka, and Hilo soils would show either positive or near zero (+ or 0) of ${\Delta}pH$ while Kawaihae soil would exhibit negative (-) of ${\Delta}pH$ at natural field condition.

  • This study was carried out to find out the source of nitrate-nitrogen (NO$_3$-N) contamination in the groundwater in Cheju Island. Among the sites which have exceeded or may exceed the criterion level (10 mg/L) of NO$_3$-N in drinking water, seven sampling sites including two reference sites were chosen. The former regions are mainly agricultural ones (A-1 to A-6) and residential (R). The latter regions are forest (F-1 and F-2). The predicted major source and its contribution to NO$_3$-N concentration at each site, using $\delta$$\^$15/N and NO$_3$-N concentration, were as follow; Those at A-1, R and F-1 was 61.1%, 50.0% and 20.0% to manure or domestic sewage, 27.8%, 45.7% and 40.0% to chemical fertilizers and 11.1%, 4.3% and 40.0% to natural soil, respectively. Those at A-2 to A-6 were 37.8%, 25.0%, 40.9%, 26.2% and 35.7% to manure or domestic sewage, 59.6%, 71.7%, 53.0%, 71.5% and 60.2% to chemical fertilizers and 2.6%, 3.3%, 6.1%, 2.3% and 4.1% to natural soil, respectively.

  • In order to evaluate soil factors affecting the growth of Italian poplar, 23 areas planted with Italian poplar were surveyed. These 23 areas were classified into 3 categories, river-side, fallow-land and hill-side. The growth performance and soil factors for each area were investigated. The growth of Italian poplar at river-side was shown to be superior to that of fallow-land and fill-side. The rates of growth for fallow-land and hill-side are decreased by 8% and 21% compared to those of river-side, respectively. This suggests that plantation of Italian poplar at hill-side would not be profitable. Soil conditions of high productive area appeared liquid phase 20%, porosity 45%, water holding capacity 35 - 40%, soil hardness $1kg/cm^3$. pH 6 and rich in organic matter and total nitrogen. The results of factor analysis for soil factors affecting to Italian poplar growth that showed eigenvalue over 1 and communality value over 70% explained factor 1 : liquid phase, porosity and water holding capacity, factor 2 : pH and calcium, and factor 3 : soil hardness. This suggests that physical characteristics of soil is more important than chemical characteristics for Italian poplar growth. Multiregerssion analysis was conducted between diameter growth and soil hardness, liquid phase and calcium. The t-values for each independent variables showed significance at 1 - 10% level, but water holding capacity and pH are not significant. It is supposed that sites suitable to Italian poplar were alluvial plain of sandy loam or part of banking soil, well-ventilating soil, lower soil hardness, apposite soil moisture absorbing with about 100cm of ground water level, plentiful organic matters and total nitrogen and little acidity soil.
