Study on Geosynthetics Appllication Methods for Railway Subbase (철도노반에서 토목섬유의 적용방안에 관한 연구)

  • Such traditional construction methods as the interchange or improvement of railway subbase maintenance and reinforcement have many problems in the matters of construction period, constructive and economical efficiency aspects. This paper will describe the alternative railway subbase reinforcement method based on geosynthetics system. It is presently very popular in Germany and Japan. In summary it is to say, that geosynthetics used at fine grained subsoils to a strong improvement of the whole railroad system.

Numerical Study on the Effects of Geosynthetic Reinforcement on the Pile-supported Embankment (수치해석을 통한 성토지지말뚝에 대한 토목섬유 보강 효과 분석)

  • Recently pile-supported embankments have emerged as an optimum method when the rapid construction and strict deformation of structures are required on soft soils. Especially geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported (GRPS) embankments are used worldwide as they can provide economic and effective solutions. However the load transfer mechanism in GRPS embankments is very complex, and not yet fully understood. Particularly the purpose and effect of geosynthetic inclusion are ambiguous and considered as an auxiliary measure assisting the arching effect of piles. Numerical parametric study using 3D finite element method has been conducted to investigate the effect of geosynthetic reinforcement on the load transfer mechanism of GRPS embankments. Numerical results suggested that as more stiffer geosynthetic is included, arching effect decreases considerably and the load concentration to the piles mostly caused by tension effect of geosynthetic. This finding is contradictory to the common understanding that geosynthetic inclusion only enhance the efficiency of load transfer. Consequently the design parameters determined from the numerical analyses are compared with those of three existing design methods. The problems of the existing methods are discussed.

A Study on Design Method of Geogrid Encased Stone Colum for Settlement Reduction in Railroad (철도노반 침하저감을 위한 토목섬유 감쌈 쇄석말뚝 설계방안 고찰)

  • The geogrid encased stone column (GESC) system, which increases the confinement effect, has been developed to improve the load carrying capacity of stone columns. The resonable design method for calculating the geogrid ring tension force and ultimate bearing capacity that can be applied to the design of GESC is proposed. In order to calculate design procedure for GESC, two ultimate bearing capacities were compared. One is the ultimate bearing capacity measured using data of the field loading test in light railway site and the other is the ultimate bearing capacity using suggested design procedure of GESC. The results indicated that design method of GESC higher ultimate bearing capacities compared with field loading test.

Installation Damage Reduction Factor for Geosynthetics Reinforcements Based on Various Full-Scale Field Installation Tests (다양한 현장내시공성시험에 근거한 토목섬유 보강재의 시공성 감소계수 평가)

  • In this paper, to investigate the influence of installation damage, a variety of full-scale field installation tests with 15 geosynthetics reinforcements and fill materials of various grain size distribution have been performed. The full-scale field installation test was conducted with reference to the FHWA (2009) guidelines. The tensile strength tests were performed by sampling up to 20 specimens randomly from the excavated geosynthetics reinforcements after compaction of fill material, and the degree of decrease in tensile strength of reinforcements due to compaction was analyzed based on the experiment results. It was found that the degree of tensile strength reduction of geosynthetics reinforcements due to the compaction of fill material is greatly influenced by the type of reinforcement and the maximum diameter of fill material. In addition, it was found that the strength reduction ratio of PET geogrid (PVC coating) with relatively small stiffness was greatest, and that the larger the maximum grain size of the fill material, the greater the strength reduction ratio. And also, a more reasonable evaluation method for the installation damage reduction factor of geosynthetics reinforcements is proposed based on the results of full-scale field installation tests in present study and the existing test results.

A Successful Beginning for Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) Composite Materials in Bridge Applications (섬유보강폴리머(FRP) 복합재료의 교량 적용)

  • 부식 열화는 교량 기술자들에게 있어서 지속적인 도전을 요구하는 문제가 되어왔는데, 스텔스 항공기를 개발하게 한 새로운 재료 기술은 교량의 부식을 해결할 수 있게 하였다. 즉, 경량의 고강도 재료로 높은 피로 저항성을 갖고 있고, 부식에 강한 복합체는 교량의 재료로서 아주 바람직한 성질을 갖고 있다 섬유 보강 폴리머(FRP) 복합재료를 교량의 건설에 이용하려는 프로젝트는 1998년 현재 80 여 개가 넘게 진행되고 있는데, 이 중 미국 내에서 31개의 프로젝트가 수행되고 있다. 이 글은 미국 내에서 FRP복합체를 교량 공학 분야에 적용하려는 초기의 성공적인 시도들에 관한 내용으로 복합체의 장점, 특성, 교량 적용시 고려 사항, 그리고 향후 복합재료에 관한 기술을 토목 구조물에 적용하는데 필요한 소요 기술 등에 관하여 정리한 것이다. 이 새로운 재료는 신설 구조물의 건설과 기존 교량의 보수 및 보강에 모두 적용할 수 있으며, FRP복합체 기술을 토목 구조물과 기반 시설물 건설 분야에 적용하는 것은 지금까지 성공적인 결과를 보여 주고 있다 미국연방도로국(FHWA, Federal Highway Administration)은 이 기술을 미국 내 교통 기반 시설물인 신규 교량의 건설은 물론 기즌 교량의 보수 및 보강에 활용하는 방안에 대하여 관심을 갖고 있다.

Real-scale Accelerated Testing to Evaluate Long-term Performance for Bridge/Earthwork Transition Structure Reinforced by Geosynthetics and Cement Treated Materials (토목섬유와 시멘트처리채움재로 보강한 교량/토공 접속구조의 장기공용성 평가를 위한 실물가속시험)

  • The transition zone between an earthwork and a bridge effect to the vehicle's running stability because support stiffness of the roadbed is suddenly changed. The design criteria for the transition structure on ballast track were not particular in the past. However with the introduction of concrete track is introduced, it requires there is a higher performance level required because of maintenance and running stability. In this present paper, a transition structure reinforced with geosynthetics is suggested to improve the performance of existing bridge-earthwork transition structures. The suggested transition structure, in which there is reinforcing of the approach block using high-tension geosynthetics, has a structure similar to that of earth reinforced abutments. The utilized backfill materials are cement treated soil and gravel. These materials are used to reduce water intrusion into the approach block and to increase the recycling of surplus earth materials. An experiment was performed under the same conditions in order to allow a comparison of this new structure with the existing transition structure. Evaluation items are elastic displacement, cumulative settlement, and earth pressure. As for the results of the real-scale accelerated testing, the suggested transition structure has excellent performance for the reduction of earth pressure and settlement. Above all, it has high resistance the variation of the water content.

Characterization of Fiber Connectivity in Fire-resistant High Strength Concrete using Percolation Theory (Percolation 이론을 이용한 내화 고강도 콘크리트의 내부 섬유 연결성 파악)

  • To improve fire-resistance of a high strength concrete against explosive spalling under elevated temperature, fibers can be mixed with concrete to provide flow paths of evaporated water within concrete to the free surface. The fiber-mix concrete approach is effective against explosive spalling when the flow path generated from melting fibers at the elevated temperature is interconnected to transport high pressurized evaporated water from the inside concrete to the free surface. The percolation theory can identify the connectivity of the fibers and provide an estimate of the fire-resistance of concrete by investigating layout of fibers. In this study, the correlation between percolation theory and explosive spalling of fiber-mixed high strength concrete is analyzed and the connectivity of the fiber in concrete is stereologically investigated by using virtual specimens of fiber-mixed high strength concrete.

Case History of Sea Dyke Filter Construction Using Geotextile Tube Mattress (튜브형 매트리스를 활용한 방조제 필터공 축조사례연구)

  • Geotextile is one of the most useful and effective polymer material in civil construction works and the main function of geotextile is separation, reinforcement, filtering and drainage. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. Therefore, the materials used in hydraulic and coastal structures are changing from the traditional rubble and concrete systems to the cheaper materials and systems. One of these alternatives employs geotextile tube technology in the construction of coastal and shore protection structures, such as embankment, see dyke, groins, jetties, detached breakwaters and so on. Geotextile tube technology has changed from being an alternative construction technique and, in fact, has advanced to become the most effective solution of choice. This paper presents case history of sea dyke filter construction using geotextile tube mattress and also, various issues related to the tube mattress design and construction technology.

  • 최근 도시화 및 산업화의 발달로 불투수면적이 증가함에 따라 건기 시 토지 표면에 축적된 오염물질이 강우유출수와 함께 하천으로 유출되는 등 수질오염의 가중과 불특정 지역에서 발생하는 비점오염원의 집중관리가 필요한 실정이다. 우리나라는 환경기초시설 등의 건설로 점오염원 관리는 강화되었지만, 비점오염원의 부하량은 점차 증가되고 있는 추세이며, 환경부 및 관계부처에서는 비점오염관리를 위한 여러 정책을 추진 중에 있다. 국내에서 사용하고 있는 비점오염저감장치는 자연형 시설과 장치형 시설로 구분되는데, 이 중 장치형 시설은 필터를 사용하여 비점오염저감의 효율성을 증가시키지만, 필터를 사용함으로써 유지관리 및 경제적인 측면에서 매우 불리하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 필터가 없는 장치형 시설을 고안하여 자연 순환기능을 최대한 유지하고, 오염물질을 최적으로 제거할 수 있는 방안을 마련하고자 수리실험을 통해 비점오염원의 제거효율을 분석하였다. 수리학적 상사법칙에 따라 원형대비 1/3축소모형과 2가지의 원형모형에 대해 총 3가지 모형에 대해 환경부에서 고시한 비점오염저감장치 기준을 뛰어넘는 유역면적, 강우강도 및 부유물질의 양으로 실험을 진행하였다. 실험결과는 유입수 농도에 대한 유출수의 농도로 계산하였으며, 장치에서 유출 직후 5분 간격으로 채취한 후, 수질공정시험법을 참고하여 부유물질에 대한 실험 중 하나인 유리섬유여과방법을 이용해 실험 결과를 도출하였다. 실험 결과, 본 연구에서 고안한 장치형 시설은 필터를 사용하지 않음에도 불구하고 환경부 기준인 부유물질 제거효율 80%이상을 만족한 것으로 나타나 현재 사용하고 있는 장치형 시설보다 유지관리 및 경제성 등이 우수할 것으로 기대된다.

Analysis of Influence Factors for Remediation of Contaminated Soils Using Prefabricated Vertical Drains (연직배수재를 이용한 오염지반 복원의 영향인자 분석)

  • Due to the growth in industrialization, potential hazards in subsurface environments are becoming increasingly significant. The extraction of the contaminant from the soil and movement of the water are restricted due to the low permeability and adsorption characteristics of the reclaimed soils. There are a number of approaches to in-situ remediation that are used in contaminated sites for removing contaminants. These include soil flushing, dual phase extraction, and soil vapor extraction. Among these techniques, soil flushing was the focus of the investigation in this paper. Incorporated technique with PVDs has been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils for the purpose of ground improvement by means of prefabricated vertical drain systems. The laboratory model tests were performed by using the flushing tracer solutions for silty soils and recorded the tracer concentration changes with the elapsed time and flow rates. The modeling was intended to predict the effectiveness and time dependence of the remediation process. Modeling has been performed on the extraction, considering tracer concentration and laboratory model test characteristics. The computer model used herein are SEEP/W and CTRAN/W, this 2-D finite element program allows for modeling to determine hydraulic head and pore water pressure distribution, efficiency of remediation for the subsurface environment. It is concluded that the coefficient of permeability of contaminated soil is related with vertical velocity and extracted flow rate. The vertical velocity and extracted flow rate have an effect on dispersivity and finally are played an important role in-situ soil remediation.
