  • This study was performed to analyze the process and develop the pattern of school dropout in the context of the Korean educational systems. Participants were 30 adolescents experiencing dropout one more times and their age ranged from 16 to 23. A major category derived and analysed from a grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin(1990). The qualitative analysis indicated that dropout is contradictory experiences in Korea. Because it is emancipation from various distress of school systems as well as loss of various benefit as students, Main causes of dropout were identity problems, school frustrations(failure in school achievements), environmental disadvantaged and delinquencies. Sometimes these various causes are emerged at the same time. Most important condition of context which was decided was whether dropout was voluntary and considered. After dropout from school, it was important if there were resources such as emotional and informative supports. Especially informative support was critical to adjust after dropout. Dropout experience was divided largely into 4 patterns such as type of 'searching the identity', 'being disorganized', 'escaping' and 'frustration'. In chronological analysis resulted in 4 stages including 'stage I. loss of motivation', 'stage II. escaping from school', 'stage III. trial and error', 'stage IV changing the meaning of dropout in the life.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the development and application of strategies using fairy tales in elementary school science. For this study, many fairy tales were searched in terms of various characteristics and educational value of the tales. Five fairy tales were selected and reconstructed to suit the 'mirrors and lenses' unit of 5th graders' school science, and teaching strategies using the fairy tales were developed to be used in six lessons. To investigate the effects of instruction using fairy tales, pre/post tests for scientific attitude were administered. To analyze students' perception of their classes, a simple survey was administered through questionnaires. We found from this study that the students related the fairy tales with their own experiences and took an active part in the class that used them. Also, instruction using fairy tales had positive effects on their scientific attitude. Many students said that the science classes were interesting, and the method using fairy tales encouraged students to study hard as well as helped them to understand the context. It was concluded that instruction using fairy tales was an effective method in terms of enhancing learning motivation, encouraging more inquiries, more opportunities to apply the scientific concept, and more positive scientific attitude. We discussed the strategies using fairy tales for implementation in elementary science classes as well.

  • This study investigated when and how science gifted students decide their career planning. We used semi-structured survey and additional interviews from the students of Science High School in Daejeon area. We found 39.1% of science gifted students in 10th grade formed their career planning from their middle school periods. They had comparatively high levels of parenting support. The students chose their career fields based on their interests and aptitudes. However, some students were able to try and never give up with self confidence even when they had low scores, and teacher's reinforcements influenced positively. 71.3% of students thought that the grades take up the achievement of career development. Besides, the career programs which had specific purposes and directions were very effective by 33.3%~64.4%. Otherwise the effects were low as 2.3%~18.4%. Especially, R&E research programs didn't effect on students' career development and some students even frustrated with research. Based on the results, we need to reflect current career education and develop worthwhile career development programs for the science gifted students.

  • This study will explore the possibility of applying process innovation as a public library for business innovation. In order to do this, the study defines the concept of process innovation through the literature review. According to survey and focus group interviews with librarians working for public libraries, this study will organize work done at libraries into the following categories: acquisition, resource management, user management, user services, programs, volunteer management, marketing, library computerization system, facility management, general affairs and statistical management. In addition, through face-to-face surveys with librarians working for public libraries it is confirmed that there are issues within acquisition, user management, and applied process innovation. In response to these issues a new process has been developed. Using this new approach, book contract procedure and requests for book related work could be improved and optimized. In the user management section, the study analyzes the requirements and subscription procedures for members through a website survey of 30 public libraries in the United States and then provides an improved system through process analysis of the membership process of Korean public libraries. It is expected that the new system will contribute to improvements in user satisfaction as well as improvements in library workflow.

  • Gugok poems were an important material for studying the Gugok landscape garden(九曲園林). the landscape feature(景物)that emerges from poetry is an important material that expresses the sense of placefulness and garden consciousness(園林意識). However, many studies are passive about plant materials that can explore the perception of nature or the aesthetic embodiment process. Therefore, this study seeks to discover various symbolic meanings and reveal the context of plants that have appeared in Gugok poems in order to expand the research material of the Gugok culture. To carry out the purpose of the study, I collected a total of 25 related poems from 18 Gugoks and found a total of 20 species of trees. I used 'R-program' to derive the meaning of trees and examined the meaning of trees by intertextuality. According to the study, the 20 species of trees contained symbolic meanings of world of Taoist hermit, pursuit of study, constancy, true pleasure, dignity, honest poverty, reign of peace, nostalgia. Many species focused on the symbolism of the 'world of Taoist hermit' and then on the 'dignity' was the most frequent. A number of species, except for the peach, zelkova and oak, had multiple meanings. Among them, pine trees and lotus had a wide range of symbolic meanings and different meanings depending on the characteristics of the surrounding landscape. While the Gugok culture generally targets natural scenery, Yongsan, Toegye, Deoksan, and Jusan showed the characteristics of strengthening or reproducing symbolic meanings through artificial plating and gardening. In order to overcome the limitations of the peach tree, which symbolizes 'Mureungdowon(武陵桃園)', Gugok poems used maple trees and reeds as alternative species. In accordance with the above context, the trees appearing in the Gugok poems expressed their symbolic meaning differently according to the landscape features, acts and purposes of the Gugoks, rather than sticking to the traditional meaning.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the general effects of low-frequency electrical stimulation of the ankle joint acupuncture points(BL62 and KI6) on the brain waves of elderly women as a pilot study to figure out the possibility of candidate non-invasive and non-chemical stimulation method for the enhancing the brain function. Methods : A randomized, controlled, double-blinded clinical trial was performed in 31 healthy women(mean age, 54.5 years) within a treatment duration of 12 sessions. In the experimental group, low-frequency electrical stimulation was applied using the maximum range of the individual insensible strength(mean current, $0.04{\mu}A$). The control group received sham stimulation. The background electroencephalographic activity was measured before and after the12 sessions. Results : After 12 sessions of stimulation, the relative power of the alpha wave increased(32 of 32 channels: significant difference in 11 channels, p<0.05); the theta(30 of 32 channels: significant difference in 10 channels, p<0.05), beta(31 of 32 channels), and gamma(30 of 32 channels: significant difference in 7 channels, p<0.05) powers were also decreased compared with the sham group. Conclusions : Electrical stimulation on the ankle joint acupuncture points(BL62 and KI6) seemed to stabilize the elderly women brain by inducing the alpha power and reducing beta, theta, and gamma powers. These results provide insight into the action mechanism of the stimulation and can assist the future developement of a non-invasive and non-chemical treatment technique for stressor related cognitive problems.
