Although rivers cover only 0.5% of the total land area on the Earth, they are windows that show the integrated effects of watershed biogeochemistry. Studies on the loads and properties of riverine carbon have been conducted because they are directly linked with drinking water quality, and because regional or global net ecosystem production (NEP) can be overestimated, unless riverine carbon loads are subtracted. Globally, ${\sim}0.8-1.5Pg\;yr^{-1}$ and ${\sim}0.62-2.1Pg\;yr^{-1}$ of carbon are transported from terrestrial ecosystems to the ocean via rivers and from inland waters to the atmosphere, respectively. Concentrations, ${\delta}^{13}C$, and fluorescence spectra of riverine carbon have been investigated in South Korea to understand the spatiotemporal changes in the sources. Precipitation as well as land use/land cover can strongly influence the composition of riverine carbon, thus shifting the ratios among DIC, DOC, and POC, which could affect the concentrations, loads, and the degradability of adsorbed organic and inorganic toxic materials. A variety of analyses including $^{14}C$ and high resolution mass spectroscopy need to be employed to precisely define the sources and to quantify the degradability of riverine carbon. Long-term data on concentrations of major ions including alkalinity and daily discharge have been used to show direct evidence of ecosystem changes in the US. The current database managed by the Korean government could be improved further by integrating the data collected by individual researchers, and by adding the major components ions including DIC, DOC, and POC into the database.
In this work, the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and mechanical properties of MWCNT-reinforced polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were investigated with varying MWCNT content from 1 to 10 wt%. Electric resistance was tested using a 4-point-probe electric resistivity tester. The EMI SE of the nanocomposites was evaluated by means of the reflection and adsorption methods. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were studied through the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) measurement. The morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results, it was found that the EMI SE was enhanced with increasing MWCNT content, which played a key factor to determine the EMI SE. The $K_{IC}$ value was increased with increasing MWCNT content, whereas the value decreased above 5 wt% MWCNT content. This was probably considered that the MWCNT entangled with each other in PP due to an excess of MWCNT.
Monosaccharide content of four forest soils were analyzed. Two soils under coniferous forest trees and another two under duciduous forest trees of Mts. Zeombong and Odae in Kangweon-Do were sampled from the surface horizon down into the subhorizons. 1. The largest amount of monosaccharide is found in the surface organic horizon of each soil and with increasing depth the amount decreases as might be expected considering total organic matter content. 2. Hexoses (galactose, glucose, mannose) predominate over pentoses (arabinose, ribose, xylose) and deoxyhexoses (fucose, rhamnose), the latter being in the smallest amount. Glucose is the most abundant monosaccharide in all samples regardless of vegetation of soil or depth. In general the content of each monosaccharide follows the order of glucose > manrtose > galactose > arabinose > xylose > rhamnose > fucose > ribose. 3. Very little amount of ribose is present even in organic horizons of coniferous forest soils. In samples taken from deciduous forest soils ribose is virtually absent. 4. The relative proportion of monosacchaiide to the total soil organic matter decreases with increasing depth, which may be resulted from the effect of prolonged humification. The total monosaccharide in the organic surface layer amounts to 27-50% of the total organic carbon or 15.7-29% of the total organic matter. Hexoses alone take the largest share of 20-38% of the carbon, or 12-22% of the organic matter.
This study compared soil characteristics and carbon storage between urban and natural lands in Chunchon. Soil pH was lower in natural lands (5.0) than in urban lands (6.6), and therefore exchangeable cation was a little lower in natural lands. Organic matter and cation exchange capacity were respectively, 1.4 and 1.7 times higher in natural lands than in urban lands, while available $P_2O_5$ was about 3.2 times higher in urban lands. Organic carbon storage in soils averaged $24.8{\pm}1.6$ (standard error) t/ha in urban lands and $31.6{\pm}1.6t/ha$ in natural lands, 1.3 times greater than in urban lands. Annual carbon accumulation in soils of natural lands was 1.3 t/ha/yr (litterfall minus decomposition). The carbon storage in Chunchon' s soils equaled about 31% of annual carbon emission (245,590 t/yr).

An electrospinning process was used to fabricate poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers embedding multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNTs). SEM images showed that the nanofiber surface and structural morphology depended on solvent types (dimethyl formamide, chlor-form and toluene) and carbon nanotube contents (0.5 and $3.0\;wt\%$). Nano-fiber alignments could be controlled by adjusting the electrodes configuration at collector sites. Relationship between carbon nanotube and PMMA nanofiber was studied with radius of gyration of polymer chain and carbon nanotube sizes. As the carbon nanotube content ratio increased, the number of bead increased.
Polystyrene/carbon nanotube (CNT) microcellular foams were prepared to have electrically conductive properties via high internal phase emulsion polymerization. In this study, we have investigated the effects of surface modification of CNT, surfactant content and dispersion time to improve the stability of emulsion and the electrical conductivity of foam. Acid treatment and a surfactant were used to effectively disperse CNTs in the aqueous phase. In the organic phase, CNTs were used after a surface modification with organic functional groups. The degree of dispersion of CNTs was estimated by the electrical conductivity of resultant microcellular foams. With raw CNTs dispersed with the surfactant in the aqueous phase, substantial conductivity increase was observed but the foams were slightly shrunk. The foams prepared with organically modified CNTs dispersed in the organic phase showed stable cell morphology without shrinkage, but displayed limitation to improve the conductivity.
In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were treated with nickel by electroless plating method for improving electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance of MWCNT. The physical properties of electroless plated MWCNT were analyzed by using ultra-high resolution scanning electron microscope (UHR-SEM), thermogravimetry (TGA), sheet resistance analyzer and EMI shielding analyzer. EMI shielding efficiencies of nickel electroless plated MWCNT were measured to be 16 dB from 800 MHz band, which was 1.6 times increased compared to that of the activated MWCNT. Also, the average sheet resistance of nickel electroless plated MWCNT was measured to be $70{\Omega}/sq$, which was 56% decreased compared to that of the activated MWCNT. This result could be attributed to the plating morphology on the surface of MWCNT. This result could be attributed to uniformity of plating morphology on the surface, which has more effect on EMI shielding efficiency than the amount of nickel plating.
We determined the total C and N stocks in trees and soils after 1 year of fertilization in an experimental orchard with 16-year-old 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai cv. Niitaka) trees planted at $5.0m{\times}3.0m$ spacing on a Tatura trellis system. Pear trees were fertilized at the rate of 200 kg N, 130 kg P and $180kg\;K\;ha^{-1}$. At the sampling time (August 2013), trees were uprooted, separated into six fractions [trunk, main branches, lateral branches (including shoots), leaves, fruit, and roots] and analyzed for their total C and N concentrations and dry masses. Soil samples were collected from 0 to 0.6 m in 0.1 m intervals at 0.5 m from the trunk, air-dried, passed through a 2-mm sieve, and analyzed for total C and N concentrations. Undisturbed soil core samples were also taken to determine the bulk density. Dry mass per tree was 5.6 kg for trunk, 12.0 kg f or m ain branches, 15.7 kg for lateral branches, 5.7 kg for leaves, 9.8 kg for fruits, and 10.5 kg for roots. Total amounts of C and N per tree were respectively 2.6 and 0.02 kg for trunk, 5.5 and 0.04 kg for main branches, 7.2 and 0.07 kg for lateral branches, 2.6 and 0.11 kg for leaves, 4.0 and 0.03 kg for fruit, and 4.8 and 0.05 kg for roots. Carbon and N stocks stored in the soil per hectare were 155.7 and 14.0 Mg, respectively, while those contained in pear trees were 17.8 and $0.2Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ based on a tree density of 667 trees/ha. Overall, C and N stocks per hectare stored in the pear orchard were 173.6 and 14.2 Mg, respectively. Compared with results obtained in 2012, the amounts of C stocks have increased by $17.7Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, while those of N stocks remained virtually unchanged ($0.66Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$).

To investigate effects of Jujube methanol extract on the carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats, experimental animals were divided into 4 groups; control group(CON), Jujube methanol extracttreated group(JME), $CCl_4$- treated groups(CCl), and Jujube methanol extract and $CCl_4$-treated group (JMC). Each group was sacrificed after 2 or 4week feeding and determined the activities of serum transaminase(GOT, GPT) and hepatic xanthine oxidase, superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px), and hepatic contents of thiobarbituric acid-reactants(TBARS) and glutathione in liver. The activities of sGOT and sGPT, and the hepatic content of TBARS after $CCl_4$-treatment were markedly increased, compared to CON, but those levels were significantly decreased by the pretreatment of Jujube methanol extract, especially in sGOT after 2 and 4 week and TBARS after 4week respectively. Xanthine oxidase activity was increased by $CCl_4$- treatment as compared to CON, but it was also inhibited by the pretreatment of Jujube methanol extract for 2 and 4 week. The activities of SOD, catalase and GSH-Px were elevated by $CCl_4$-treatment, compared to CON, but those elevated activities were showed significant decreasing effect by pretreatment of Jujube methanol extract after 2 and 4week as compared to CON, however, hepatic catalase activity was not affected significantly. These results suggest that Jujube methanol extract is believed to be a possible protective effect for the carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
