  • In this study, a mass-spring model is used to dynamically describe and calculate the shape and movement of a mid-water trawl system. This mathematical model theorizes that the factors constituting the system are the material points and the external forces such as hydrodynamic load, gravity, and buoyancy act on these material points. In addition, it surmises that these material points are connected to each other by springs, the springs do not have any mass, and the internal force acts on these springs. The non-linear differential equations are implicitly integrated with time for guaranteeing a stable solution. The dynamic simulation by the mass-spring model shows the status of the gear such as fishing gear depth, distance between doors, shape of the gear, and tension of each line. It depends on the parameters such as towing force, warp length, force of a sinker, buoyancy of a float, type of door and netting materials. The validity of the model is verified by comparing simulation motions of a trawl system obtained from computed values to those from an actual experiment.

  • A three dimensional (3D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, circular and annular plates with nonlinear thickness variation along the radial direction. Unlike conventional plate theories, which are mathematically two dimensional (2D), the present method is based upon the 3D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components u/sub s/, u/sub z/, and u/sub θ/ in the radial, thickness, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in θ, and algebraic polynomials in the s and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the plates are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the plates. Numerical results we presented for completely free, annular and circular plates with uniform linear, and quadratic variations in thickness. Comparisons are also made between results obtained from the present 3D and previously published thin plate (2D) data.

  • Generally, structural plates under axial compression should be stiffened by longitudinal stiffeners in order to enhance the buckling strength. Though U-shaped ribs would be more efficient for the stiffened plate system, there is in the absence of a proper design guides or relevant research results. Thus this study is aimed to examine the local buckling behavior of stiffened plates with U-section ribs. 3-dimensional analysis models which include 3 types of U-shaped longitudinal stiffeners were simulated by using the finite element code ABAQUS. The bifurcation analysis were conducted and then the buckling analysis results are compared with the theoretical equation values. It is found that the rotational constraint effect provided by the U-ribs should increase the local buckling strength. Some features drawn from a series of parametric study results are summarized.

  • The failure mechanism of a hollow bridge deck which is made of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) to improve its durability and life time significantly is investigated using both experiments and analyses. While the Load-displacement behavior of the deck in the longitudinal direction is almost linear just before the failure, the behavior in the transverse direction shows a strong nonlinearity even in its initial response with relatively small magnitude of loads. We found that the nonlinearity is due to the imperfection of the connection between the flange and the web; a plastic deformation can t라e place in the connection. The argument is demonstrated using a simple structural model in which a rigid plastic hinge is introduced to the connection. We also checked the contribution of the delamination mechanism to the failure. But the delamination is not the main mechanism which initiates and causes the failure of the bridge deck. In order to improved the structural behavior of the deck in the transverse direction, we suggested that the empty space of the bridge deck is filled with a foam and confirmed the improved behavior by a numerical analysis.

  • A new index for the buckling strength of non-structured plates is proposed. The external work or the deformation energy caused by the external loads or the boundary displacement controled by a load parameter is calculated along an equilibrium path of the member under consideration. If the second variation of the energy with respect to the parameter loses its positiveness, it defined as the limit of the stability. In contrast to the current method given in codes where the stability limit is evaluated by using only representative internal forces, the evaluation of the stability limit is always consistent even with the change of the distribution of the internal forces on the boundary. If the elasticity is concerned, the result from this proposed approach becomes identical to that from the classical methods.

  • The methods of design of mat foundation may be classified as the rigid method and the flexible method according to the assumptions used. In the rigid method, the mat is assumed to be infinitely rigid and the contact pressure is assumed planar distribution. However, the contact pressure is not planar but curved surface because the real mat is not rigid. Therefore, it is not precise to analyze the mat foundation using the rigid method, and so there is no choice but to accept an error. On the other hand, in the flexible method, the mat is considered as the plate on the elastic foundation. This elastic plate theory is for the infinite plate acting a concentrated load on the elastic foundation. However, the functions for the moment, shear, and the deflection by the flexible method are very complex, there are many difficulties for the designer to use them. Also, it is impossible to use the design aid figures as a substitute of the complex functions, because they do not cover the values at the critical sections for the moment and shear. Therefore, in this research, the simplified functions for the moment, shear, and the deflection are proposed by regression analysis for an designer to use easily the flexible method. The simplified functions are very accurate and very ease to use.

  • Lau basin of south Pacific, as an active back arc basin, is promising area bearing seafloor massive hydrothermal deposit that is located in a subduction zone between the Pacific ocean plate and Indo-Australian continental plate. Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute tracked from 2004 to 2006 the hydrothermal activity to the extension of the northeast Lau Basin, targeting seamount. hydrothermal activity by tracking was found hydrothermal evidences. In this study, Marine seismic survey was carried out in the Lau basin seamount of the possibility of hydrothermal deposit. In particular, Marine magnetic survey and seismic survey was carried out at the same time in TA-12 seamount and noise characteristics were found in the seamount. the main process of data processing is Bandpass filter, FK filter, Deconvolution for noise attenuation such backscatter and multiple reflections. the migration is performed to compensate for reflection points followed by seamount of a slope. In this study, bedrock and upper strata could be identified and in the Future, the comparative method with Multi Beam Echo Sounder(MBES) are likely to derive the correct velocity model, the marine magnetic survey results should be considered.
