  • The applicability and performance of HMS-25 as the railroad roadbed materials were evaluated through the model and laboratory tests. The uniaxial compression test of HMS-25, model soil box test, and combined resonant column and torsional shear test were performed for static and dynamic analysis of railroad roadbed. The uniaxial compression test result of HMS-25 shows steady increase in strength due to hardening chemical reaction between HMS-25 and water. The result of model soil box test reveals that railroad roadbed of HMS-25 is better than that of soil in several aspects such as bearing capacity and settlement. The combined resonant column and torsional that shear test result indicates that shear modulus of HMS-25 increases with the power of 0.5 to the confining pressure and that shear modulus increases with the increase of curing period.

  • In the present study, a procedure to predict the depth from the ground surface to the center of bulging failure zone in each of the square granular group piles under a rigid mat foundation is proposed. This analytical procedure is established on the basis of the conical modeling of bulging failure shape and the replacement ratio of soft foundation soils. considering the effect of a share of procedure to estimate the ultimate cylindrical pressure in the area reinforced with granular piles and the ultimate bearing capacity of each of granular piles in group. This analytical procedure is also established on the basis of the pre-determined depth to the zone of bulging failure and an iterative solution technique. Finally the analytical procedures proposed in this study are verified by analyzing the results of 3D finite element analyses, and the predictions of ultimate bearing capacity of granular piles are compared with the results obtained from the tests, empirical equation and 3D finite element analyses.

  • The dynamic behaviour of a four-span continuous girder railway bridge subjected to multiple support excitations is investigated using the response spectrum method. Small-amplitude oscillations and linear-elastic material behaviour are assumed. Soil-structure interaction effects are disregarded and only the out-of-plane response of the bridge is considered. The results of the response spectrum analysis are compared with those from a time history analysis. Different combination rules for the superposition of modal maxima as well as supports are employed, such as square-root-of-sum-squares, double sum and p-norm methods.

  • New design equations for calculating the lateral-torsional buckling moment resistances of singly stepped I-section beams subjected to general loading on the top flange are suggested based on the investigations of elastic finite-element analyses. The new equations presented in this study are compared with current moment gradient modifiers presented by other researchers and specifications. The study considered almost loading cases on buildings and bridges. The proposed equations should be easily used to calculate the lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance of stepped I-beams.

  • The load deformation behavior of the cap-pile-soil system is investigated, based on numerical analysis. Special attention is given to consideration of pile cap flexibility. Rigid pile cap analysis and flexible cap analysis were conducted for comparison. A numerical method that takes into account the coupling between the rigidities of the piles, the cap, and the column has been introduced to analyze the response of pile group supported columns. The prediction of the lateral loads and bending moments in the pile cap is much more conservative for a flexible cap than for a rigid cap.

  • Piles that support offshore wind turbine structures are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads of wind, waves, and tidal forces. For a successful design, it is imperative to investigate the behavior of the cyclic laterally loaded piles; the p-y curve method, in which the pile and soil are characterized as an elastic beam and nonlinear springs, respectively, has been typically utilized. In this study, model pile tests were performed in a 1 g gravitational field so as to investigate the p-y behaviors of cyclic laterally loaded piles installed in saturated dense silty sand. Test results showed that cyclic lateral loads gradually reduced the overall stiffness of the p-y curves (initial stiffness and ultimate soil reaction). This is because the cyclic lateral loads disturbed the surrounding soil, which led to the decrement of the soil resistance. The decrement effects of the overall stiffness of the p-y curves became more apparent as the magnitude of cyclic lateral load increased and approached the soil surface. From the test results, the cyclic p-y curve was developed using a p-y backbone curve method. Pseudo-static analysis was also performed with the developed cyclic p-y curve, confirming that it was able to properly predict the behaviors of cyclic laterally loaded pile installed in saturated dense silty sand.

  • The bridge approach slabs (BAS) to provide a transitional roadway between a roadway pavement and a bridge structure have not performed adequately due to various factors. The current Korean Roadway Design Guidelines treat the BAS as a simply supported beam with 70% of the span length and do not consider settlement and void development underneath the slab. To investigate the effect of soil settlements on the bending moment of BAS, a beam on elastic support (BAS-ES) was used in the present study. The parameters used in this study were span length, washout length, washout location, and soil modulus. It was shown from the parametric study that washout regions closer to the midspan exhibit maximum moment in the slab. Since voids under the BAS have typically been observed to be closer to bridge abutments, the springs from the abutment were removed to simulate settlement and void development in the model. The design moments based on AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were compared to those of Korean Standard Specifications for Highway Bridge and Design Trucks for Highway Bridges. Even if the design moment from BAS-ES was used to incorporate the effect of the potential washout, significant savings could still be achieved compared to the current BAS design.

  • A modified FRP-concrete composite deck applicable to cable stayed bridge with long girder-to-girder span is proposed, and its design and economical efficiency are presented. The existing FRP-concrete composite deck has low section stiffness due to adoption of GFRP panel with low elastic modulus, which arrives at difficulty in meet of serviceability limit such as deck deflection. So a new-type FRP-concrete composite deck, named precast FRP-concrete deck, is developed by extensioning concrete at the both ends of FRP-concrete composite deck, which brings the effect of reduction of net span length of deck. Compared to the existing FRP-concrete composite deck this modified deck has the advantage of increasing span length but slightly increases self weight. For this type of deck the section optimization is carried out for the cases of simply supported on girder and composite to girder. The optimized deck was applied to cable stayed bridge with a center span length of 540m, and as a result it is verified that PFC deck can be applied efficiently to cable stayed bridge due to reduction of quantity of upper structure.

  • Development of the paved track is required as a low-maintenance of conventional line. The paved tracks are one of the types of the ballast reinforced tracks those are manufactured by adopting the prepacked concrete technique. The main elements of this tracks are large sleeper, low elastic pad, fastener, cement mortar, geotextile and recycled ballast. Low elastic pad is the most effective element of such tracks on the basis of stress-displacement characteristics, dynamic response and fatigue characteristics. The stiffness of the pad determine the stiffness of the track. Consequently, it is more important in case of concrete track structure such as paved track because application of low elastic pad seriously effect the durability and stability of the track. The main objective of this study is to confirm the reduction of train load, which transfer to roadbed through various pad effects. To achieve this task static, numerical analysis and real scale repeated loading test was performed while load reduction effect of low elastic pad was analyzed by using displacement, stress and strain ratio characteristics of the paved track.

  • A consistent finite element formulation and analytic solutions are presented for stability of thin-walled circular arch. The total potential energy is derived by applying the principle of linearized virtual work and including second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. As a result, the energy functional corresponding to the semitangential moment is newly derived. Analytic solutions for the out-of-plane buckling of symmetric thin-walled curved beam subjected to pure bending or uniform compression with simply supported boundary conditions are obtained. For finite element analysis, the cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions and $16{\times}16$ stiffness matrix for curved beam elements and $14{\times}14$ stiffness matrix for straight beam elements are evaluated, respectively. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study, analytical and numerical results for lateral buckling problems of circular arch are presented and compared with available analytical solutions.
