Load Carrying Capacity Assessment of Bridges with Elastic Supports Application (탄성지점의 적용에 따른 교량의 내하력평가)

  • This study applied elastic supports in order to evaluate load carrying capacity using measurement data obtained from load tests actively and utilizing various evaluation methods. In order to confirm the adequacy of structural analysis based on elastic supports and to improve the reliability of experiment results, we conducted a deflection test with flexural beams prepared as overhanging beams and, based on the results, performed precision safety diagnosis for real bridges under public service for improving the load carrying capacity evaluation method for bridges under public service. In the results of the bending test, compared to deflection calculated by the existing method, deflection obtained by applying elastic supports was closer to the actually measured deflection. In the results of evaluating load carrying capacity for a 3 span continuous steel box girder bridge just after its completion, load carrying capacity by elastic supports was smaller by up to 39% than that by the existing method. When the load carrying capacity of bridges is evaluated by the existing method the results vary among engineers due to lack of guidelines for evaluation such as the application of stress modification factor. This study was conducted as an effort to solve this problem through active research.

Evaluation for Approximate Bending Moment Coefficients of Non-Composite Form Deck One-Way Slab considering Unequaled Elastic Deflection of Steel Beams (철골보의 부동탄성처짐을 고려한 비합성데크 일방향 슬래브의 근사적인 휨모멘트 계수 평가)

  • In a steel structural system, noncomposite form deck one-way slab is the plate element supported by four-edged steel beams with unequaled stiffness. However, design criterion has analyzed the one-way slab as the continuous beam. Because the end beams that support the one-way slab have elastic supports t hat cause different deflections according to the support conditions and locations, the bending moments corresponding to the support ic support effect is not considered in the design criterion. Accordingly, to conduct a reasonable estimation of approximate moment coefficients considering the unequaled elastic support conditions, this study analyzes and estimates various models with varia bles for the ratios of live load to dead load and pattern arangements of live loads and span lengths. The analytical methods considering the finite three-dimensional plate element, the two-dimensional elastic support and the infinite stifnes suport are performed.

In-plane buckling strength of fixed arch ribs subjected vertical distributed loading (수직 등분포 하중을 받는 고정 지점 포물선 아치 리브의 면내 좌굴 강도)

  • When arch ribs are subjected to vertical loading, they may buckle suddenly towards the in-plane direction. Therefore, the designer should consider their in-plane stability. In this paper, the in-plane elastic and inelastic buckling strength of parabolic, fixed arch ribs subjected to vertical distributed loading were investigated using the finite element method. A finite element model for the snap-through and inelastic behavior of arch ribs was verified using other researchers' test results. The ultimate strength of arch ribs was determined by taking into account their large deformation, material inelasticity, and residual stress. Finally, the finite element analysis results were compared with the EC3 design code.

The Effects of Elastomer-Bearing on the Dynamic Behaviors of Bridge for KHSR (고속철도 교량의 동적거동에 미치는 탄성받침의 영향)

  • The bridges for Korea High-Speed Railway(KHSR) under construction are supported with pot bearings on the middle pier and with pad bearings on the side piers, respectively. The dynamic analysis on these bridges due to trains with high speed, however, has been performed neglecting the effects of bearings. The objective of this study is investigation on the dynamic behavior of bridge supported by pad bearings. The effects of pad bearings with various flexibilities on the dynamic responses of bridges are studied. From the results of this study, the effects of elastomeric bearing on the dynamic responses of bridge(especially vertical accelerations) may cause undesirable behaviors.

A Study on the Eigenvalue Problems of Partially Fixed End Members with Intermediate Elastic Supports (중간탄성지점이 있는 부분고정단 압축재의 고유치 문제에 관한 연구)

  • The finite element method is used for the study of the eigenvalue problems of partially fixed end beams with intermediate elastic supports. The elastic critical loads and natural frquencies of the beams are investigated by changing the numbers of elastic supports and their stiffness, and also by changing Kinney's fixity factor, $f_a$. The relationship between two eigenvalues is established by calculating the corresponding values of $(w/w_n)^2$ through changing $(P/P_{cr})$ values. The results of this study are as follows : (1) The elastic critical loads and natural frequencies of beams increase with increases in Kinney's fixity factor, $f_a$ and with the increased numbers of intermediate elastic supports. (2) The relationship between elastic critical loads and the natural frequencies of partially fixed end beams with intermediated elastic supports is $P/P_{cr} + (w/w_n)^2/ = 1$ without regard to Kinney's fixity factor, the stiffness of elastic supports, or the number of elastic supports.

Free Vibrations of Elastica Shaped Arches with Linear Taper (선형 변단면 정확탄성곡선형 아치의 자유진동)

  • This study deals with the free vibrations of the elastica shaped arch with linear taper. The shape of elastica is obtained from the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. Differential equations governing free vibrations of such arch are derived and numerically solved to determine natural frequencies, in which three kinds of taper type and two kinds of end constraint, respectively, are considered. For validating the theories presented herein, the frequency parameters obtained in this study are compared to those of SAP 2000. As results of the numerical analyses, effects of end constraint, taper type, slenderness ratio and section ratio on the lowest four non-dimensional frequency parameters are extensively investigated.

Geometrically Linear and Non-linear Analysis of Plates and Shells Resting on Arbitrary Elastic Edge Supports (임의의 탄성 경계 지점으로 지지된 판과 쉘의 기하학적 선형 및 비선형해석)

  • A linear and non-linear analysis for plates and shells with arbitrary edge supports subjected to various loading was presented. The 9-node ANS(Assumed Natural Strain) hell element was employed and the spring element, which could express an arbitrary edge support using the six degrees of freedom, was introduced. For the application of his analysis, the plates and shells with various edge supports were analyzed, and the ending behavior with these edge supports were obtained accurately. For these edge supports, particularly elastic edge support was simulated by six springs and reasonable results were obtained. The results show that the present method can be widely used to analyze the bending behavior of plates and shells with arbitrary edge conditions.

Development of Macro-Element for the Analysis of Elastically Supported Plates (탄성 지지된 판구조 해석을 위한 매크로 요소의 개발)

  • The superstructure of general bridge like slab bridge and slab on girder bridge is composed of elastically supported isotropic plate. The objective of this study is to develop the new analysis method for elastically supported plate with general edge beam or girder(boundaries) under arbitrary out of plane loading. The displacement solutions for the macro-element of plate and beam are obtained by solving for the unknown interactive forces and moments at the beam or nodal line locations after satisfying equilibrium equation along the nodal line. The displacement functions for macro-elements ate proposed in single Fourier series using harmonic analysis, and the equilibrium equations of nodal line are composed by using slope-deflection method. The proposed analysis method is programmed by MS-Fortran and can be applied to all types of isotropic decks with bridge-type boundaries. Numerical examples involving elastically supported plates with various aspect ratio, loading cases, and bridge-type boundary conditions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of this program. The major advantage of this new analysis method is the development of a simple solution algorithm, leads to obtain rapidly responses of bridge deck system. This proposed method can be used in parametric study of behavior of bridge decks.

  • The maximum moment may occur at interior supports of continuous bridges. If the bigger moment is applied on them, a local yielding at interior supports may occur. They may show plastic behaviors, and the moment will be redistributed. The strength design, L.F.D., redistributes 10% of the negative moment which is obtained from the elastic analysis. However, A.L.F.D method computes the moment which is redistributed. This moment is called automoment. The moment-rotation curve is needed to find automoment. In this paper moment-rotation curve for compact sections suggested from AASHTO Guide Specifications is used to find automoment. Based on A.L.F.D. limit states specification method, a three-span continuous bridge is designed.

A Numerical Study on Inelastic lateral Torsional Buckling Strength of Doubly Stepped and Singly Symmetric I-Beam Subjected to Uniform Moment (균일모멘트가 작용하는 일축대칭 I형 양단 스텝보의 비탄성 횡-비틀림 좌굴에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams are sometimes suddenly increased or stepped at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams subjected to pure bending. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS and a regression program were used to analytically develop new design equation. The flange thickness ratio, flange width ratio and stepped length ratio were considered as parameters of this study. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometric imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The proposed solution can be easily used to calculation for inelastic lateral torsional buckling strengths of monosymmetric beams with doubly stepped cross sections and to develop new design equations for inelastic lateral-torsional buckling resistances of stepped beams.
