  • The dynamic loads and load-point displacements of concrete three-point bend (TPB) specimens had been measured. The average crack velocities measured with strain gages were 0.16 ㎜/sec ∼ 66 m/sec. The fracture energy for crack extension was determined from the difference of the kinetic energy for the load-point velocity and the strain energy without permanent deformation from the measure external work. For all crack velocities, there were micro-cracking for 23 ㎜ crack extension, stable cracking for 61 ㎜ crack extension at the maximum strain energy, and then unstable cracking. The unstable crack extension was arrested at 80 ㎜ crack extension except the tests of 66 m/sec crack velocity. The tests less than 13 ㎜/sec crack velocity and faster than 1.9 m/sec showed static and dynamic fracture behaviors, respectively. In spite of much difference of the load and load-point displacement relations for the crack velocities, the crack velocities of dynamic tests did not affect on fracture energy rate during the stable crack extension due to the reciprocal action of kinetic force, crack extension and strain energy. During stable crack extension, the maximum fracture resistances of the dynamic tests was 147% larger than that of the static tests.

  • Effects of various chemical additives and heat treatments were investigated on the wheat flour doughs and breads. Ammonium ferric citrate, Ca-citrate, CaCl$_2$, FeSO$_4$, MgCl$_2$and ZnO were mixed respectively to the flour up to 0.1% of flour dry weight basis. Ammonium ferric citrate and ferric sulfate showed no significant effects on the dough properties and magnesium sulfate, calcium chloride and zinc oxide increased elastic properties and optimum dough mixing time. However, calcium citrate and magnesium chloride showed no significant effects on the dough mixing properties. Most of chemicals were detrimental on the bread volume except MgSO$_4$ and CaCl$_2$. Breads with MgSO$_4$ and CaCl$_2$ retained the equal or slightly higher volume compared to control bread. Crumb and crust colors of breads with addition of chemicals were changed to lighter than that of control bread. L values both of crumb and crust increased with addition of chemicals except Ca-citrate. To inactivate the endogenous enzymes of flour, flour was roasted under electric oven, exposed to UV and microwave. Those heat treatments of flour increased dough stability and produced no dough breakdown after optimum mixing time. However, bread volume of heat-treated flour decreased.

  • Consolidation and remedies for slope stability were considered for the slope with additional embankment. Transferred stresses due to additional embankment were assessed by the derived formula based on elasticity theory. Available remedies for slope stability with additional embankment including JSP method, stone column method and EPS method were studied. Caution needed for using JSP method is high pressure which can result in heaving of adjacent soils. Shortages of used case and noise of construction of stone column method are also considered for the safe remedy for slope stability.

  • Domestic or international existing researches regarding rail damage factors are focused on laying, vehicle conditions, driving speed and driving habits and overlook characteristics of track structure (elasticity, maintenance etc). Also in ballast track, as there is no special lateral spring stiffness of track also called as ballast lateral resistance in concrete track, generally, existing study shows concrete track has 2 time shorter life cycle for rail replacement than ballast track due to abrasion. As a result of domestic concrete track design and operation performance review, concrete track elasticity is lower than track elasticity of ballast track resulting higher damage on rail and tracks. Generally, concrete track has advantage in track elasticity adjustment than ballast track and in case of Europe, in concrete track design, it is recommended to have same or higher performance range of vertical elastic stiffness of ballast track but domestically or internationally review on lateral spring stiffness of track is very minimal. Therefore, through analysis of service line track on site measurement and analysis on performance of maintenance, in this research, dynamic characteristic behaviors of commonly used ballast and concrete track are studied to infer elasticity of service line track and experimentally prove effects of track lateral spring stiffness that influence curved rail damage as well as correlation between track elasticity by track system and rail damage to propose importance of appropriate elastic stiffness level for concrete and ballast track.

  • Some researchers suggested that tactile sensor system would be useful in evaluating masticatory muscles of TMD patients, but there were few studies on the effects of chewing with time. The aim of this study was to investigate the change of elasticity and stiffness for masseter and temporal muscles of normal subjects before, during and after gum chewing and to obtain the baseline data for further researches on the elasticity and stiffness for masticatory muscles of TMD patients. Stiffness and elasticity of their anterior temporalis and inferior masseter muscle were measured bilaterally by a tactile sensor system. Each subject was instructed to sit on a chair for evaluation of masticatory muscles. Before operating the sensor, the thickest skin area over anterior temporalis and inferior masseter muscles were selected as the points to be pressed by a tactile sensor, and marked with a pen. While the teeth of subjects were lightly contacted, the probe of the tactile sensor was placed perpendicularly over the marked point over the skin, followed by computer-controlled movement including gently pressing straight down on the muscle for a second and retracting. All subjects were instructed to chew gum (Excellent Breath, Taiyo Co., Japan) bilaterally with a velocity of 2 times per second for 40 minutes after the first measurement had been performed for the baseline data of all subjects. The measurements had been repeated during chewing with 10 minutes of interval and continued for 40 minutes with same interval after chewing. Resultantly, the decrease of elasticity and the increase of stiffness in masticatory muscles can be seen significantly within 10 minutes after chewing and those were maintained during chewing without significant change with chewing time. The elasticity of muscles was recovered within 10 minutes after stopping chewing, but the stiffness was recovered more lately than elasticity by about 10 minutes. Based on these results, it can be concluded that elasticity and stiffness of muscles would be good indicators to evaluate the masticatory muscles objectively, when more supported by further researches.

• The paper presents the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and having an intermediate translational linear spring. The translational linear spring can be located at an arbitrary position. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of linear spring supports on the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are fully investigated for various locations and magnitudes of the translational linear spring.
