A Causal Analysis of Suicidal Impulse in the Context of Parents, Friends, Teachers and Community Support: Gender Difference (부모, 친구, 교사, 지역사회 지지와 청소년의 자살충동간 인과관계 분석 : 성별 차이를 중심으로)

  • Given the 4 contexts-parents, friends, teachers and community- of adolescents, this research verified the casual relationships between each contextual support and the suicidal impulse, and the gender difference. The 4-year longitudinal data(KYPS) collected from 3,697 adolescents were used in this study. Using the Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model, the suicidal impulse was consistently present from the 3rd grade in middle school to the 3rd grade in high school with significant stability. Gender differences were founded in the effect of parental support among the 3rd grade in middle school. Also the negative effect of friends' support on the suicidal impulse among the first grade high school students. The effects were more stronger for girls than boys. Previous supports by teachers and community had no significant effects on later suicidal impulses. These results suggest that the study of suicidal impulse needs to examine the complex support system of multiple context layers.

  • This study is to test moderating effects of family support, friend's support and teacher's support in the relationship between experienced violence in school and adolescent suicidal impulse. For the purpose of this study, 298 adolescents who were experienced violence in school were sampled and surveyed. The analytical results are the followings: Moderating effects of family support, friend support and teacher support are significant in the relationship between experienced violence and depression. They are also significant in the relationship between experienced violence and suicidal impulse. On the other hand, only family support is significant in the relationship between depression and suicidal impulse. This study suggests some policy implications based on this findings.

Effect of Perceived Stress and Anxiety, Depression on Suicide Ideation of junior nursing students (저학년 간호대학생의 지각된 스트레스, 불안, 우울이 자살생각에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of perceived stress, anxiety, depression of suicide ideation in nursing students. Data were collected from 224 nursing students in B city and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 22.0. The degree of suicide ideation in nursing students was 3.33±5.28. There were significant differences in suicide ideation with number of friend(F=4.114, p=.007). There was negative correlation between suicide ideation and perceived stress(r=.404, p<.001), anxiety(r=.480, p<.001), depression(r=.580, p<.001). The factors affecting suicide ideation of the study subjects were anxiety(β=.158, p=.040), depression(β=.463, p<.001), number of friend(β=.109, p=.044), with an explanatory power of 36.8%. Through the result of this study, it is necessary to development various education and program that can control the suicide ideation of nursing students.

  • The aims of this study were verifying the influences of social support(family, friend, community) on perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness and mediating effects of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness between social support and suicidal ideation. In results, family support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through mediating role of perceived burdensomeness as well as serial mediating effect of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness. Friend support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through parallel and serial mediating effects of perceived burdensomeness and hopelessness. Community support reduced suicidal ideation of the elderly through mediating role of hopelessness. Social support show not direct effect but indirect effect on suicidal ideation through reduction of negative influencing factor(burdensomeness, hopelessness). In conclusion, we proposed it were needed that various efforts which improve the relation between family members in the age of nuclear family and ageing era, social policy support which development social network of the elderly, and the efforts which keep informed the social policy support of the community.

The Effect of Social Support for High School Students on the Prevention of Suicidal Ideation - The Moderating Effect of Gender, Grader and School Type - (고등학생의 사회적 지지가 자살생각 예방에 미치는 영향 - 성별, 학년, 학교유형의 조절효과를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to look into how social support for high school students was affecting suicidal ideation and verify how the moderating effect worked on risk factors in the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation. Specifically, three sub-factors of social support were classified into friend support, teacher support, and parent support, and were set as independent variables. In addition, suicidal ideation was dependent variables, gender, grade level, and school type as moderating variables. The main research results are as follows. First, teacher support, friend support, and parent support all appeared to have a significant negative effect on suicidal ideation. Second, the suicidal thoughts were higher in female students than in male students than in male students and in students of general high school than in those of vocational high school. Third, support from friends and parents was more effects in reducing suicidal thoughts for female students than male students. Fourth, the effect that teacher support that support and parent support reduce suicidal thoughts was greater for first graders than second graders. Bases on the results of the analysis, interviews were also conducted with high school teachers. Through the results of this study, I would like to propose practical measures to alleviate social problems related to suicide in high school students and to provide basic data for policy measures.

The Influencing Factors on GateKeeper Behavior of Adolescents for Suicide Prevention (청소년의 자살예방을 위한 게이트키퍼 행동 영향요인)

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the factors on Gatekeeper behavior of adolescents for suicide prevention. The participants were five high school students from D metropolitan city. The collected data were analysed using t-test, ANOVA, Multiple regression with SPSS 21.0 program. In the results of the study, Gatekeeper behavior showed significant difference by gender(t=2.85, p=.005), type of school(t=-2.81, p=.006), experience of significant others' suicide(t=-2.09, p=.038). Gatekeeper behavior had a positive relationship with the perception toward suicide prevention(r=.23, p=.006) and the knowledge about suicide prevention(r=.42, p<.001). In regression analysis, significant influencing factors on Gatekeeper behavior were the perception toward suicide prevention (${\beta}=.20$, p=.006) and the knowledge about suicide prevention(${\beta}=.35$, p<.001), and these variables showed 24.3% of variance. Therefore, it need to develop the intervention for improving positive perception and active knowledge about suicide prevention in adolescents. In addition, future study to identify various predictable variables is needed.

The Influence of Self Perfectionism, Depression and Hopelessness on Suicidal Ideation in University students (일부 대학생의 자기완벽성, 우울, 절망이 자살생각에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of university student's self perfectionism, depression and hopelessness on suicidal ideation. The survey purposively collected 240 cases from randomly selected 3 universities in Seoul, Korea. The data collected from May to June of 2011 were analyzed by t-test, anova and hierarchical multiple regression in SPSS. As results of the analysis, first, those in low economic group and those with fewer number of friends showed higher depression, hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Second, those with higher self perfectionism, those with higher depression and hopelessness were appeared to be with higher suicidal ideation. The study suggested not only mentoring program but also programs to decrease psychological pressure, overcome overwhelming expectation and psychological anxiety of students.

Impact of Peer's Suicide on Mental Health of Adolescents (친구의 자살이 청소년의 정신 건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study examined the impact of peer's suicide on mental health of middle-school students. The aim of this study was to describe the course of posttraumatic stress and grief reaction, suicide ideation, and depression score among adolescents after exposure to peer's suicide and to examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress and other mental health scores in these subjects. Methods : Thirty seven middle school students who were exposed to the suicidal death of a peer completed self-report measures to assess levels of depression, grief reaction, post-traumatic stress, and suicide ideation at 1 month and 8 months after the peer's suicide. Results : There was no significant change in mental health scores between 1 month and 8 months. Level of posttraumatic stress after 8 months was related to acute grief response. Subjects who experienced a clinically significant level of suicidal ideation and posttraumatic stress showed more mental health problems. Conclusion : The results suggested that peer's suicide strongly impacted mental health issues of adolescents at a critical time of adolescent development. Clinicians should perform a thorough evaluation of mental health problems for youth who experienced peer's suicide and help them in management of their grief reaction.

Design and Implementation of a Serious Educational Game for Youth Gatekeeper (또래 자살예방 지킴이를 위한 교육용 기능성 게임 개발)

  • In the age of low fertility and aging society, youth suicide is not the problem of a certain class but it should be recognized as an urgent and important social problem to be solved by our society. We aim to support the training of youth gatekeeper who can acquire the right attitude and understanding of suicide for adolescents, detect premature suicide signs of peer friends and link them to specialized institutions. In this paper, we propose a scenario based learning program that is linked to the concrete situation that the young people can sympathize with and a serious educational game of visual novel type that encourages participation of youth. We expect that the proposed serious game will improve the accessibility of educational facilities and youths through smart devices.

An Evaluative Study on the School-Based Post-Suicide Crisis Intervention Program for Adolescents (청소년 자살 사후 학교중심 위기개입 프로그램에 대한 평가연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the school-based post-suicide crisis intervention program for adolescents. Researchers implemented the post-suicide crisis intervention program for all the students, classmate students, teachers and staff members in seven middle/high schools where the suicidal accident happened. Researchers collected data from the three participant groups using open and closed questionnaires and documents, and analysed the data applying mixed evaluative methods. Main results were as follows; First, classmates in two classrooms responded that this crisis intervention program was useful for expressing the sad feeling and mourning their friend. Second, consciousness for life respect of classmates in four classrooms increased. Third, the meaning such as the change of consciousness for life respect and psychological stability was drawn from analysis of categorizing the responses to open questionnaires. Teachers and staffs in six schools responded to questionnaires that post-suicide crisis intervention was helpful for classmate students. Based on the results, practical guidelines were suggested.
