This study was performed to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of seven commercially available light-cured cervical restorative materials one resin-modified glass-ionomer material(Fuji II LC) three polyacid-modified composites(Compoglass, Dyract, F2000), and three light-cured composites(Heliomolar, Palpique Estelite, UniFil F). All samples were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. 2.0N of weight was loaded during the test and the abraded surfaces were examined with profilometer and SEM after 100,000 cycles. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The highest hardness value of 79.7 was observed in the FT group and the lowest value of 20.0 was observed in the HM group. Results of Tukey test showed that an overall significant difference was indicated except the CG and DR groups(p<0.05). 2. The highest surface roughness was observed in the FL group and the lowest was observed in the UF group. Results of Tukey test showed the significant difference between the FL or FT and UF groups(p<0.05). 3. Statistically higher abrasion and surface roughness were observed for the dentifrice of paste type, Perio A+, than for that of gel paste type, Tom & Jerry. 4. The surface roughness values increased on the abraded surfaces because of the protrusion of filler particles due to selective removal of matrix resin.
The purpose of this study is to work out plans to reduce oral malodor by carrying out effective methods. In the research, 17 volunteers were selected from the students at Sahmyook Health University's Dental Hygiene Dept. in order to measure the effects of reduction of oral malodor. The results are as follows. 1. As time passes, both the control group and the experimental group proved the effects of the reduction of oral malodor for 20 minutes after the experiment(p<0.05). 2. The experimental group with tooth-brushing showed a statistically significant difference compared with the control group from a lapse of 5 minutes after the experiment to 20 minutes(p<0.05). 3. The experimental group with tongue cleaner did not prove a statistically significant difference compared with the experimental group with toothbrushing( p>0.05). 4. The experimental group in which participants took a candy showed a statistically significant difference compared with the control group after 5 minutes(p<0.05). 5. The experimental group with chewing a gum proved a statistically significant difference compared with the control group for 10 minutes(p<0.05). Using a washing implement of the tongue, taking a candy, and chewing a gum proved the same effect of reducing foul breath as in the case of operating a tooth-brushing. This experiment proves that taking a candy or extending time of chewing a gum was effective in a short time, and using a tongue cleaner or chewing a gum for 5 minutes was a useful method for reducing oral malodor if not operating a tooth-brushing.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to identify differences in time, frequency, and methods of toothbrushing according to knowledge acquirement of oral health between first and third year dental hygiene students who had relatively sufficient oral health education and students majoring non-health related field who had less opportunities of oral health education, to emphasize importance and necessity of the education, and to present basic data for development of effective programs of oral health education. Methods : 2,032 dental hygiene students and students majoring non-health related field attending 12 universities in Korea had been selected as subjects and were asked to complete a self-administered survey time, frequency, and methods of toothbrushing. The SPSS 12.0 program was used for statistical analysis of the collected data, and the significance of difference by groups was tested by using chi-square test, the one-way ANOVA and independent t-test. The mean frequency of toothbrushing per day and the rate of toothbrushing before and after meal were analyzed by using of multiple comparisons through the Scheffe test as post hoc test. Results : The rate of toothbrushing after lunch was 60.2% in third year and 39.2% in first year dental hygiene students, 20.3% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. The mean frequencies per day of dental hygiene students were 3.33 times in third year and 2.85 times in first year dental hygiene students, 2.46 times in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. The rate of toothbrushing after meal among total frequency of toothbrushing per day was 85.36% in third year and 84.81% in first year dental hygiene students, 77.90% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. As for the methods of toothbrushing, 'Turning up and down' was 68.8% in third year and 43.1% in first year dental hygiene students, 30.6% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. Conclusions : Oral health education through dental hygiene course may improve the oral environment management of dental hygiene students and oral health education on toothbrushing should be strengthened for the students majoring non-health related field.
To prepare basic data for oral health promotion of high school students through the survey of the recognition of oral health, a questionnaire survey was conducted for 369 students. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS 11.5 with $x^2$-test, fisher's exact test, t-test. The obtained results were as follows 1. The average of the high school student's DMF rate, DMFT index and SiC Index was 87.53%, 3.36, 6.50. 2. The average of the high school student's oral health knowledge was more than 3, 70% of highschool did right toothbrushing. But toothbrushing frequency of student of more than 60% was less than 2 a day. 3. In SiC Index, Only 30% of high school students received oral health education and 80% of them recognized oral health manpower's education needs.
The purpose of this study was to explore some of the right directions for school dental-health education, by examining nursing students' knowledge on and attitude to the two major oral diseases in our country, dental caries and periodontal disease, as they will take charge of dental-health education and care for children in school dental-health center as sole expert health personnels after graduation. As a result of making an analysis of their knowledge and attitude, the following findings were acquired: (1) The students investigated perceived their oral cavity to tend to be healthy(36.8%) or in moderate situation(36.3%), although they had a subjective symptom for hot or cold food. (2) They thought dental caries is attributed to poor dental hygiene care(90.4%). Among them, 94.1% found toothbrushing effective for the prevention of dental caries, but just 40.2% agreed that toothbrush should be straight. (3) Those who considered fluoride effective for dental caries prevention thought the best way to use fluoride is taking fluoride-containing tap water(2.00). The second best way was fluoride mouth rinse(2.40), followed by the topical application of fluoride(2.70), use of fluoride dentifrice, and intake of fluoride(4.30) in the order named. (4) The regular examination and toothbrushing were mentioned as a way to prevent dental caries, but just toothbrushing was put in action for dental health. So their knowledge and actual attitude weren't the same. (5) They brushed their teeth for oral health(94.3%). Toothbrushing was done after breakfast(71.9%) or before bedtime(65.8%). Just 40.3% performed toothbrushing after lunch. That was implemented twice(35.7%) or three times(37.6%) a day. (6) Out of those who pointed out toothbrushing as a way to prevent periodontal diseases(84.7%), the effect of toothbrushing on the prevention of periodontitis wasn't supported by 7.1% of those who completed the course of study for the teaching profession and by 17.0% of the others who didn't. The two groups weren't of the same opinion. The above-mentioned findings suggest that the dental knowledge of the nursing students wasn't good enough to be properly responsible for school children's dental health care. In particular, there was a gap between knowledge and attitude. To improve children's poor dental health and help their oral cavity stay healthy, there is a need to activate school dental-health center, which is now in model operation, and to make the most of dental hygienists, who are educated to be a dental-health specialist, for more successful dental-health care for school children.

The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behavior and awareness of teachers in community children's centers, the state of oral health care among children in the centers and the opinions of the teachers on child oral health education in a bid to gather information required for the development of oral health education programs geared toward community children's center teachers. The subjects in this study were 178 teachers who worked in 98 community children's centers in the city of Incheon. After a survey was conducted from April 28 to June 4, 2010, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: The 57.3% of the teachers investigated provided toothbrushing guidance from time to time or couldn't do it at all. As for the reason why toothbrushing guidance was scarcely conducted, the largest group cited shortage of sinks(27.5%) as the reason, and the second biggest group replied they couldn't afford to pay attention to that due to heavy workload(20.6%). The third greatest group was pressed for time(16.7%). The teachers got a mean of 3.27 in oral health behavior, and 87.7% were concerned about children's oral health. The group of teachers who ever received oral health education was significantly better at oral health behavior and showed significant more interest in oral health(p<0.01). The 97.2% of the respondents considered oral health important. Concerning the reason, they replied it was crucial for systemic health (74.2%). The 89.4% of the teachers viewed child oral health education as necessary, and 86.5% had an intention to provide oral health education for children. They hoped to receive education on the oral health control act(4.52) and the prevention of dental caries(4.40). The above-mentioned findings confirmed that in order to step up the oral health promotion of child users of local children's centers, it's necessary to provide secondhand education for them through their teachers who have a great impact on them. Therefore the development of oral health education programs that cater to local children's center teachers is required.
To examine the relationship between occurrence of oral malodor and smoking, drinking, oral health behavior characteristics. A total of 144 adults were measuring the malodor by use of Oral Chroma volatile sulfur compounds. Data were analyzed with t-test, one-way of variance and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0. hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$) was indicated to be so higher concentration in the group of carrying out scaling sometimes than the regularly group(p<0.01). methyl mercaptan($CH_3SH$) was indicated to be higher concentration in previous smoker than non-smoker and smoker(p<0.05), smoking for over 20 years was higher than the under 20 years group(p<0.05). The group of drinking over 5 times a week was indicated to have higher concentration than the under once-twice a week group(p<0.01). The group of not toothbrushing before going to sleep had higher concentration than the group of toothbrushing before going to sleep(p<0.05). The group of scaling sometimes was indicated to have higher concentration than the group of scaling regularly(p<0.05). dimethyl sulfide($(CH_3)_2S$) was indicated to be higher concentration in the group with over 2 bottles of Soju than in the group with under 1 bottles of Soju(p<0.01). The regular scaling will need to be carried out in the preventive dimension for managing oral malodor. The guidance on non-smoking and moderation in drink will need to be surely included.
Objectives : In general, the active of volatile compounds which become usually known as the principal ingredient of bad breath is closely connected with temperature. In this study, an investigation was made into the correlation between oral malodor and the temperature of rinsing water. Specifically, an analysis was made of saliva in rinsing water with relation to amount, flow and pH. In addition, a calculation was made of O'Leary index. The results are expected to be basic data for oral malodor reduction plans. Methods : A total of 30 women who are in their 20s without any systemic disease and teeth braces and non-pregnant were chosen for the study. The research was carried during 3 weeks from 28 Mar to 11 Apr in 2011. Results : Saliva was not significantly affected by the temperature of rinsing water, in connection with saliva amount, saliva flow and saliva pH. The O'Leary index and oral malodor was the highest in warm water, but the subjects preferred rinsing with cold water. Conclusions : In conclusion, oral malodor was found to be reduced in inverse proportion to the temperature of rinsing water. Thus, it is recommended to rinsing water with warm water after tooth brushing.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the hand washing management and tooth brushing frequency. Methods : The subjects in this study were 7,285 adults who were selected from the third-year(2009) raw data of the fourth national health & nutrition survey. Results : The mean frequency of daily toothbrushing was 3.35. Increases the frequency of both toothbrushing and hand washing with higher grade class. The higher the tooth brushing frequency, the intention of hand washing management at school and home was more increased. Conclusions : This study can contribute to the general health and oral health promotion.
Objectives : This study aims to provide the basic data for the maintenance and management of healthy implants through finding out the educational experience of toothbrushing and the oral hygiene management for the implant patients and to determine the maintenance measure. Methods : From April 1 to october 1, 2012, 250 patients in the dental clinic in Daejeon completed the self-reported questionnaire. Results : As for the educational experience of toothbrushing, 66.4 percent received the training for toothbrushing and 33.6 percent had not received the training for toothbrushing. Those who brushed three times a day accounted for 74.1 percent. Those who received the training for toothbrushing comprised 56.0 percent and took regular check up of every 6 months. Approximately 50.0% received regular scaling service every 6 months. Periodical medical check up comprised 55.6% among those who received toothbrushing education. Approximately 63.9% thought that periodical medical check up is the most important to maintain oral health. Conclusions : There were important factors for oral health. They were tooth-brushing, the utilization of various oral hygienic products, and the awareness of importance of oral hygiene management. The customized education program for the general public should be implemented as regular as possible.
