  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the essential services, importance, interval of examinations, and role of dental hygienists in children's family dentistry program. Methods: A total of 124 participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed using independent t-test, and ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. Results: All participants stated that oral examination and panoramic radiography are required; children should be educated about brushing, use of oral products, and regular check-ups; and preventive treatments such as molar sealants and prophylaxis should be offered. They stated that light-curing resins and glass ionomer fillings should be offered in treatment services. They stated that examination intervals should be shorter for education and prevention rather than treatment. Dental hygiene students were more likely than dentists and dental hygienists to say that the program was more important. There was a correlation between oral examinations and education and treatment, and between essential services and their importance. Conclusions: Services considered essential and important should be provided first, education and prevention should be provided more frequently than treatment, and their importance should be emphasized not only to dental hygiene students but also to dental hygienists and dentists who are the main providers of services.

In contrast to the chronic disease management project, this research intended to provide basic data for the expansion of the system. We summarized the status of the system's expansion since 2012. It analyzed research reports, papers, related literature and books on the system of children and adolescent dental care service. The literature analysis classifies year, publication, title and published location. The current state of the system is listed as location, target, support funds, etc. Implementation of the project was first discussed in 2007. Initial planning focused on the Oral Health Policy Research Society of the Gunchi. Effective measures were formulated in 2008 under the center of the Gunchi. It is time to discuss the dental care system's direction and development, as well as future aims based on a beneficial program of preventive care. A system of dentistry should be introduced to benefit the entire population.

  • Objectives: This study identified problems and improvements in projects targeted to dental workers in a child-adolescent dental care service. Methods: The subjects were 40 dentists, 43 dental hygienists, and 51 others who participated in service in Seoul. A self-administered questionnaire was used to address the problems and improvements in the project. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and one-way analysis of variance were performed using SPSS 23.0. Results: Oral examination was performed by 99.2% of dentists, and some service items such as professional tooth cleaning, fluoride application, and scaling were performed by dental auxiliary personnel regardless of legal duties. The problem was that the subjects took a lot of time in providing services, and students or guardians participating in the project refused to receive preventive dental services. As regards improvements, the insurance fee was the highest (48.1%), followed by the provision of regular services (38.8%), and system improvement and administrative support (35.7%). Conclusions: To activate a child-adolescent dental care service, it is thought that continuous efforts such as providing financial support by the government, education to increase participants' understanding, and social consensus for the participation of service providers and beneficiaries are required.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of public preventive dental healthcare services named the "Dental Preventive Health Services for Children" (DPHSC) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Korean children. Of the total 20,802 beneficiaries in 2018, 110 10-year-old elementary school students were randomly selected and were requested to complete a survey using the Korean version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) questionnaire before and after participating in DPHSC. Overall, 107 participants completed the pre- and post-survey. COHIP scores and clinical results such as numbers of decayed and missing teeth, malocclusion, and oral hygiene status from dental examination were statistically analyzed and the reliability and the validity of the responses were verified. There was a significant clinical increase in mean overall COHIP scores following DPHSC (p < 0.001, effect size 1.05). Children with decayed and missing teeth demonstrated poor OHRQoL. In conclusion, DPHSC can improve the OHRQoL of 10-year-old children.

Statistically, dental trauma and admission in the medical department due to trauma had significant relations. In case of those patients due to car accidents, they had dental trauma without exception. Statistically, patient's group with dental trauma in hospital room was younger than patient's group with dental trauma in non-hospital room. Statistically, dental trauma and treatment in hospitalization had no significant relations, and dental trauma and revisiting department of dentistry after discharge had no significant relations. For the child and adolescent inpatients hospitalized for car accidents, there is high possibility of accompanying dental trauma, and dental consultations can be delayed. For the young child inpatients, the possibility of dental trauma occurrence in hospital room is high. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that affect the follow-up pattern after dental treatment under conscious sedation. Patients who were treated under sedation at the department of pediatric dentistry of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital from 2009 to 2013 were included in this study. • A person with neurological disorder is defined as a person with limitation of ambulation or basic life activity due to the cerebral palsy or traumatic brain damage, stroke. Recently, the DMFT of the children with neurological disorders is similar or lower than the DMFT of the children with no disability. But, this article is about the severe-early childhood caries in children with grade 1 neurological disorder. It is supposed that the primary motor impairment and secondary physical weakness, frequent hospitalization, sugar- rich food and drugs, lack of oral care, delayed dental visit made high caries susceptibility. In case of treatment of the children with severe neurological disorders, dentists should make a thorough caries preventive plan based on individualized caries risk assessment. Also parents and medical doctors should recognize the importance of oral care and do the early dental visit and home care.

  • To achieve the dental health of children and adolescents which is the objective of the pediatric dentistry, the role of the public service should be increased. The basis of the public service is established by many laws of which the Dental Health Law is most important. The percentages of primary schools that had the school dental health clinic, that implemented the fluoride rinsing program, and that implemented the group toothbrushing after lunch were 7.2%, 57.5%, and 46.9%, respectively, and the percentages of primary school children that received the dental health education and that received the fissure sealing were 48.0% and 12.4%, respectively(2006). About 42% of infants and preschool children from 0 to 6 years received preventive dental care in the last one year, at the nursery or kindergarten(18%) or at the health center(1%)(2005). The percentage of the health centers that implemented water fluoridation was 11.3%, and the percentage of the population who drank the fluoridated water was 5.7%(2006). It was suggested that the school dental health administration should be unified, that dental health teachers should be employed, and that the comprehensive dental health care should be supplied to all the children and adolescents through the circuit school dentists and the school dental hospitals in the long term. Also, the dentist in charge system for the children and adolescent was suggested.
