Treatment timing is a very important factor to consider in treating skeletal Class III patients by means of maxillary protraction. According to the literature maxillary Protraction should be carried out at an early age before puberty. However, no scientific data were presented to support this statement and recent studies supported by statistical data showed disagreement concerning the optimum treatment time of maxillary protraction. Therefore, there is no agreement about the optimum treatment time of maxillary protraction. In this study hand-wrist X-rays were taken from 119 patients and subjects were grouped into prepubertal and pubertal group according to their skeletal maturity. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric X-rays were taken and treatment effects were compared. The average treatment time was 6.5 months for the prepubertal group and 6.1 months for the pubertal group. The obtained results were as follows ; 1. The amount of maxillary forward movement was the same for Pretreatment and pubertal group. 2. The amount of maxillary downward movement was the same for prepubertal and pubertal group. 3. The amount of mandibular downward and backward rotational movement was the same for prepubertal and pubertal group. 4. Dental effects were the same for prepubertal and pubertal group.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral environment on the strength of resin bracket wings by comparing fracture mode according to water immersion and thermocycling. Seventy-five resin brackets(Spirit MB, Ormco, California) were divided into three groups and treated for six months as follows; (1) untreated, (2) water immersion in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$, (3) water immersion in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ with total 2,100 times of thermocycling taken 350 times each month. Fracture mode of the wing was tested on universal testing machine. In addition to resin brackets, 25 metal brackets were used as controls. Through the statistical analyses, following results were obtained. 1. Resin bracket wings showed significantly lower fracture strength than metal brackets(p<0.001). 2. Water immersion and water immersion with thermocycling groups showed significantly lower fracture strength than open air condition group(p<0.001). 3. Water immersion with thermocycling group showed significantly lower fracture strength than water immersion group(p<0.001). The above results suggest that the mechanical property of resin bracket wing nay be influenced by oral environment and further research is needed to improve the strength of the wing in the resin bracket.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of mechanical properties, surface topography and frictional force of various nickel titanium wires after recycling. Three types of nickel-titanium wires and one type of stainless steel wire were divided to three groups: as-received condition(T0:control group), treated in artificial saliva for four weeks(T1) and autoclaved after being treated in artificial saliva(T2). Some changes were observed for the selected mechanical properties in tensile test, surface topography by means of SEM and 3D profilogram, and frictional coefficient. The findings suggest that: 1. Nickel-titanium wires demonstrated no statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity, but stainless steel wire demonstrated statistically significant differences in maximum tensile strength, elongation rate and modulus of elasticity between the groups(p<0.05). 2. NiTi, Optimalloy, Stainless Steel wires demonstrated increased pitting and corrosion in SEM finding. 3. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater surface roughness(Ra and Rq) through 3D profilogram when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference. 4. Recycled NiTi, Optimalloy and stainless steel wires demonstrated significantly greater maximum frictional coefficient when compared with the control wires(p<0.05), but Sentalloy didn't demonstrate significant difference The changes of surface roughness and frictional coefficient in NiTi and Optimalloy had no clinical implication. Consequently recycled nickel titanium wires demonstrated no clinical problem in tensile properties, surface topography and frictional coefficient.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light direction exposure times and setting times when using plasma arc light on shear bond strength of metal brackets. 240 extracted human premolars were randomly assigned to one of 16 groups Standardized brackets were bonded to enamel using different light curing units (Plasma arc light and Halogen light), exposure times (Plasma arc light 2. 4, 6 seconds and Halogen light 20 seconds). and light directions [Vertical direction [V] and Oblique direction [O]). 8 groups were tested after 5 minutes and the remaining 8 groups after 24 hours. The metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT. Shear bond strength was measured by a universal testing machine. The results were as fellows: There were as differences between the shear bond strengths of the Vertical groups (V) and Oblique groups (O). regardless of exposure times and types of light curing units (p>0.05). The shear bond strength of the group with 2 seconds of plasma light were significantly lower than other exposure time groups (P<0.05). The shear bond strength tested after 5 minutes was lower than after 24 hours (p<0.05) The Adhesive Remment Index (ARI) score showed no statistically significant difference among the different groups. The results of this study suggested that the light direction of plasma arc light had no influence on the shear bond strength of metal brackets to enamel. and exposure times more than 4 seconds produced shear bond strengths similar to those Produced with a conventional halogen curing light.
As computer Programs for cephalometric analysis were developed in diagnosis & treatment planning, digital imaging of film-based cephalograms came to be needed. When a digital camera is used, a problem encountered the image distortion produced according to the focal length, which causes errors in indentifying landmarks. In addition, changes in the image size and compression ratio will inevitably produce a low quality image, causing errors in identifying landmarks. Hence. we have found the focal length producing the least image distortion when digital imaging the film-based cephalograms and the minimal digital camera setting which helps to identify the correct landmarks using the COOLPIX4500 digital camera (Nikon, Japan). The results were as follows The image distortion was minimized at a focal length of 16.4mm (79.4mm when converted into a 35mm film camera) when digital imaging the film-based cephalograms. When wide imaging, with a focal length of under IS.4mm, barrel distortion was found and when tole imaging. with a focal length of over 15.4mm pincushion distortion was found. The minimal digital camera setting was $2272{\times}1704$ pixel at normal (1/8) compression from which we can identify the correct landmarks at the same level as tracing the film-based cephalograms manually. As a result. when digital imaging the film-based cephalograms, using a COOLPIX4500 digital camera (Nikon, Japan), the focal length should be 16.4mm the pixel image size over $2272{\times}1704$, and the compression ratio over normal (1/8).
This study was aimed to investigate the effects of indomethancin on physiologic root resorption and to examine the dental pulp and tissue changes around the resorbing teeth 13-14 week old six mongrel dogs were divided into 3 groups, two experimental groups administered indomethacin 2mg/kg/day and 8mg/kg/day orally two times a day for 14 days respectively. and control group administered a placebo The deciduous incisors showing root resorption were selected. fixed for 24 hrs in $10\%$ formalin solution. demineralized in $10\%$ EDTA solution. Invested in paraffin and sectioned in $5{\mu}m$ thick sections. The preparations were stained with H&E staining and Masson's trichrome staining and examined under the light microscope Observation revealed that deciduous root resorbing tissue resembles inflammatory tissue and accompanies bore remodelling. The dental pulp was formal except the area near root resorption. well organized columnar odontoblasts layer under the predentin, anud the odontoblasts near root resorption were cuboidal or flat cells in the disrupted layer under the predentin. Indomethacin administered group showed a partial decrease in the number of odontoclasts and nucleus But there was no sign of pulp change by indomethacin. These results suggest that indomethacin inhibits recruitment of odontoclasts partially and that of osteoclasts more. and so when it is administered for long periods deciduous root resorption can be delayed and eruption of the successor can be delayed for a short period.
The configuration of mandibular symphysis is likely to be dependent upon the genetic predeterminants and/or compensatory adjustments onto functional demands. The interrelation of morphological distinctives of symphysis in conjunction to the craniofacial skeleton had been scarcely anecdotal, therefore, the objective was to determine the correlation of morphological modifications between the mandibular symphysis and craniofacial complex. Lateral cephalometric headfilms of 212 subjects were employed for the conventional measurements. The proportion of chin height against chin depth length was referred as chin ratio, then, Low Symphysis (IS) and High Symphysis (HS) groups were turned out by means of the chin ratio. These samples yielded 35 in LS and 35 in HS groups. The data per capita were statistically analyzed and the following results were drawn ; 1. Overall characteristics of the craniofacial skeleton in HS group manifested hyperdivergence and LS group showed hypodivergence. 2. Gonial angle increased as chin ratio increased and was highly correlated to the chin ratio. 3. The chin ratio presented high correlation to the vertical face height, especially in terms of the chin height to anterior face height and the chin depth to posterior face height. 4. The morphological configuration of chin was hardly correlated with hyoid bone position.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the indications of bionator in Class II division 1 malocclusion, The 48 subjects were classified into good result group(group1) and poor result group(group2) in reference to posttreatment molar relation, posttreatment overbite and overjet, posttreatment profile, and relapse. Pretreatment lateral cephalograms were calculated and evaluated by t-test stepwise discriminant analysis. The results were as follows ; 1. In jaw bone relationship, ANB, facial convexity angle, AB to facial plane angle were significantly different between two treatment groups. In denture pattern, L1 to facial plane, L1 to A-Pog, FMIA, and U1 to facial plane were significantly different and m soft tissue profile, protuberance of lower lip and upper lip were significantly different between tw o treatment groups. 2. The results in according to discriminant analysis stated that L1 to facial plane, ANB, FMIA and protuberance of lower lip help prediction of treatment result of bionator. 3. 3 major influential variables were obtained by stepwise discriminant analysis - L1 to facial plane, articular angle and ANB difference. And Fisher discriminant function was made by these three major variables.
mastication is basically regulated by central pattern regulalor(CPG) of brain system, target organ output from CPG is modulated by oral sensory feedback, anterior cross bite pattern infuluence the feedback mechanism and change muscle activity and jaw movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate differnce anterior cross bite group from normal group, the selected sample groups were 30 normal patient, 30 anterior cross bite patient. EMG and EGN of Biopak system were used for this study The following results were obtained 1 In resting slate of mandible, anterior cross-bite showed the higher muscle activities in all the muscle.(exception:left digastric muscle) than normal group. 2. In clenching state, No significant difference in muscle activities of normal group and anterior cross bite group was noticed 3. In swallowing state Normal group showed the higher muscle activities in left and right masseter muscle, right posterior temporal muscle. 4. In maximum opening and closing velocity, normal group showed the higher value than anterior cross-bite. 5. In the mean value of the maximum opening, the maximum anterior posterior movemenl from centric-occlusion, the lateral deviation from centric occclusion, normal group showed the higher value than anterior cross-bite group.
Objective: To aid the development of a frontal image simulating program, we evaluated the soft tissue frontal changes in relationship to movement of hard tissue with orthognathic surgery of facial asymmetry patients. Methods: Preoperative and postoperative frontal cephalograms and frontal view photographs of 45 mandibular surgery patients with facial asymmetry were obtained in a standardized manner. Vertical and horizontal changes of hard tissue and soft tissue were measured from cephalograms and photographs, respectively. Soft tissue change in result to hard tissue change was then analyzed. Results: Both vertical and horizontal correlation analysis showed a weak relationship between the changes. Hard tissue points that were picked for 1 : 1 mean ratio with soft tissue points did not show any significant relevance. For each soft tissue change, regressive equation was formulated by stepwise multiple regression analysis, and the equation for soft tissue Menton was most reliable in predicting changes. Both vertical and horizontal hard tissue changes were used together in prediction of vertical or horizontal soft tissue change. Conclusions: The results suggest that computerized image simulation using regression analysis may be of help for prediction of soft tissue change, while 1:1 mean ratio method is not useful.
