  • This study examined the relationship between family-friendly community characteristics and the life satisfaction of working mothers with elementary school children, and investigated whether the relationship was mediated by work-family conflict and facilitation of working mothers. For the analysis, the study used the response data of 627 working mothers from the 11th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC, 2019) and multi-mediation effect analyses were conducted using PROCESS. The main results are as follows. First, the higher neighbor support, the higher the work-family facilitation, which significantly increased life satisfaction. Second, the appropriateness of parenting environment and community service infrastructure satisfaction showed significant indirect effects with life satisfaction through increasing work-family facilitation and lowering work-family conflict. Moreover, the appropriateness of parenting environment was positively related with life satisfaction and it was a only variable that was directly associated with life satisfaction. On the other hand, the convenient access to community service infrastructure was found to lower work-family facilitation and lower life satisfaction, confirming the need for follow-up studies. This study shows that the family-friendly characteristics of the community are important for working mothers with elementary school-age children and provides empirical evidence to improve the family-friendly community characteristics.

Factors related to accessed and mobilized social capital are also investigated. The subjects are 571 married women (284 employed and 287 unemployed) who have children younger than 5 years old. Their networks are revealed to show different composition and resource distribution according to the respective employment status. No significant difference is found in accessing social capital depending on the employment status. However, working women are capable of mobilizing more social capital for economic resources and child-care assistance than non-working women. The employment status is significant only in mobilizing social capital related to child-caring assistance. The effects of variables related to social networks of married women differ according to the types of resources sought for. The choices of married women on the employment status and child-rearing are observed in the findings of the ability to mobilize social capital for child-care assistance. The importance of kin ties and various social services for building social capital are discussed.

  • In general, employment duration is influenced by the individual characteristics (level-1) as well as type of the occupational characteristics (level-2). That is, the data has hierarchical structure in the sense that individual employment duration is influenced by the individual-level variables (level-1) and the job-level (level-2) variables. In this paper, we study the determinants of the employment duration of youth-intern in the SMEs (small and medium enterprises) using Cox's mixed effect model. Major results at level-1 variables are as followings. First, the hazard rate of treatment group is lower than that of control group. Second, the hazard rate of woman is lower than that of man. Also, the hazard rate is lower, for the older and the workers working in the bigger company. Investigation of level-2 variables has shown that random effect for job-level is statistically significant.

  • This study explores the patterns of meal related activities of couples of pre-retirement age in Korea. Using 2004 Time Use Survey of Korea conducted by Korea National Statistics Office, the study examines whether the couple have breakfast and dinner together, who prepares the meal and who does the dishes after meal. The descriptive and statistical analysis, as expected, shows the patterns of such activities are heavily influenced by the working status of the couple. Currently working men or women are less likely to have meals together nor do participate in preparing meals or doing dishes. Nonetheless, it is apparent that women are more likely to involve preparation and clean-ups regardless of their working status. As a whole, the activities of meal preparation and doing the dishes remains in the domain of women's work while the proportion of married women working outside home is substantial.

Data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program. In case of high employment stress, the comparative risk of self-rated oral health status was 1.7 times in Gingiva swelling, 1.46 times in ulcer and 1.53 times in hypersensitivity. After correcting the general characteristics (gender, age, grade, major), the comparative risk was 1.56 times for Gingiva swelling, 1.42 times for ulcer and 1.44 times for hypersensitivity. Therefore employment stress was found to be related to oral health and it is considered necessary to find ways to prevent and manage oral health by seeking various methods such as counseling support or stress control to reduce employment stress.
