The Characteristics Analysis and Manufacture of Explosive BKNO3 on PMD (PMD용 화약 BKNO3 제조 및 특성분석)

  • This research investigates the manufacturing process and characteristics analysis of $BKNO_3$ (Boron Potassium Nitrate) as pyrotechnic are commonly found in the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries. A solid pyrotechnic mixture is composed of an oxidizing agent, fuel, and binder. Precipitation process was used to uniformly mix the raw material. Through the analysis of the material characteristics and thermal response is designed optimum ratio by NASA CEA program. It was compared by performing the evaluation of these size/shape/sensitivity/calorimetry characteristics.

  • In Korea, study of monopropellant thruster have been started from 1990s by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). 5N hydrazine thruster that is a first Koreanized hydrazine thruster, have been used as flight model for several satellite. In parallel, in order to retain core technology for monopropellant thruster, catalyst and test facility development have been carried out and successfully completed. On the basis of these technology, KARI is performing development of 1N/200N hydrazine thruster and basic research of green propellant thruster.

  • Most of propellants that is used widely in the world release toxic gases such as methane gas and carbon dioxide during combustion which are noxious to the environment. This study established a synthetic process of a high nitrogen containing derivative of triazole, 4,5-bis(azidomethyl)-methyl-1,2,3-triazole (DAMTR), which can be applied as energetic plasticizer to environmental concerns. Also, the compound was characterized by NMR, IR spectroscopy, and physical properties such as glass transition temperature, melting point, decomposition temperature, density, impact sensitivity, viscosity and volatility were measured. In addition, the heats of formation (${\Delta}H_f$) and detonation properties (pressure and velocity) of DAMTR were calculated using Gaussian 09 and EXPLO5 programs.

  • This paper describes on the study of mitigation technique in which a pyrosensor is automatically sensing the rate of risk of fire or explosion of solid rocket motor exposed to an unexpected fire and makes the rocket motor burn itself safely. SCO test was carried out with a rocket motor loaded with HTPB propellant, in which a thermal pyrosensor igniter was installed. The rocket motor in SCO test was located in an oven at $50^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours. The temperature was regulated to be elevated at the rate of $3.3^{\circ}C$ per hour. Results showed Type V(Burning) reaction in this SCO test.

  • Various types of solid rocket motors which manufactured by each aim have their own shelf life. So they must be done away if not used. And inferior goods during manufacturing must be done away too. In the past, out burning and out detonation is usual but now, environmental pollution should be concerned so that there are related technologies and commercial plants in other countries already from 1970's. Hence in this paper, we will talk about foreign state and domestic development of solid rocket motor demilitarization using wash out.

  • From the previous researches about flow characteristic of micro-nozzle, we found that viscosity and back pressure induced heavy losses in micro nozzle. To overcome thess losses, we began to study new conceptual micro propulsion system that is thermal transpiration based micro propulsion system. It has no moving parts and can pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only (cold to hot). Most of previous research on thermal transpiration is in its early stage and mainly studied for application to small vacuum facility or gas chromatography in ambient condition using nanoporous material like aerogel. In this study, we focus on basic research of propulsion system based on thermal transpiration using polyimide material in vacuum conditions.

  • The propulsion feeding system of KSR-III is composed of tubes, valves and PSC, and controls the flow of propellant entering to engine. The test of PTA-I is carried out to verify the characteristic of propulsion feeding system and component. The tests of operation characteristic of component, hydraulic characteristic of tubes, flow control using venturi, oscillation of dynamic pressure, characteristic of regulator are carried out. Troubles of component are found out, and renewed, and the performance of the propulsion feeding system is verified through PTA-I. The results of PTA-I are used to the configuration of propulsion feeding system and test of PTA-II.

  • This paper describes the results of study on reaction of insensitive igniter in which a pyrosensor is automatically sensing the rate of risk of fire or explosion of solid rocket motor exposed to an unexpected fire and makes the rocket motor burn itself safely. The Slow Cook Off(SCO) test following the regulation of MIL-STD-2105D was carried out with a rocket motor loaded with HTPB propellant, in which a thermal pyrosensor igniter was installed. The auto-ignition temperature measured was approximately $140^{\circ}C$ and it corresponded to Type V(Burning) reaction in SCO test, while the temperature by Kissinger equation was calculated to be $165.5^{\circ}C$.

  • The burning characteristics of HTPB/AP solid propellants were measured by closed bomb of internal volume of 200 cc and 700 cc up to 30,000 psia. The burning rates of closed bomb method showed good agreement with those of strand burner method between 1,000 psia and 5,000 psia, and the sharp increment of pressure exponent(n) around 6,000 psia as a result of testing in accordance with loading densities. The burning rate measured in 200 cc and 700 cc of internal volume of closed bomb agreed well without the relation of internal volume size.

  • Direct acting pressure relief valve applicable to propellant tank of launch vehicle is modeled in this study The flow resistance of the partially opened valve is modeled as a function of the distance of the valve stem from the resting position. The position of the valve varies transiently as a function of its mass, the spring force, sliding friction, and the pressure differential. Choking at valve throat and compressibility are considered for the analysis. This study presents systematic analysis method for pressure relief valve applicable to propellant tank of liquid rocket. The results shows transient flow resistance caused by stem motion and the importance of choking at valve throat for pressure relief valve design.
