Recent researches of the fire resistance in concrete focus on how to secure relevant functions in the high strength concrete. However, the demand of normal strength concrete less than 40 MPa takes most of the total concrete demand. Therefore, fire resistance study needs to cover not only high strength concretes but also normal strength concretes. This study evaluated the fire resistance performance of 40 MPa concrete columns, taking the concrete covering thickness and the size of section as variables. Consequently, the fire resistance performance improved as the section size and the covering thickness became larger.

The face detection is a necessary first-step in the face recognition systems, with the purpose of localizing and extracting face regions from input images. But it is not a simple problem, because faces have many variations such as scale, rotation and lighting condition. In this paper, we propose a novel method to detect not only frontal faces but also partial rotated faces in still images. Firstly, we produce the eye candidates in the sub-regions of an input image to detect rotated faces. Secondly, the eye candidates are used to measure the angles of rotated faces. Thirdly, we are able to derotate the rotated face then put it to Bayesian classifier. We make an experiment with rotated multiracial face and show the good results in this paper.

We present a novel scheme for generating line drawings from 2D images, aiming to facilitate effective visual communication. In contrast to conventional edge detectors, our technique imitates the human line drawing process to generate lines effectively and intuitively. Our technique consists of three parts: line extraction, line rendering, and user guidance. In line extraction, we extract lines by estimating a likelihood function to effectively find the genuine shape boundaries. In line rendering, we consider the feature scale and the blurriness of lines with which the detail and the focus-level of lines are controlled. We also employ stroke textures to provide a variety of illustration styles. User guidance is allowed to modify the shapes and positions of lines interactively, where immediate response is provided by GPU implementation of most line extraction operations. Experimental results demonstrate that our technique generates various kinds of line drawings from 2D images enabled by the control over detail, focus, and style.

A new readout circuit involving a pixel-level reset control was studied for 2-D long wavelength infrared focal plane arrays. The integration time of each pixel can be optimized individually and automatically. Hence, the readout circuit has a wide dynamic range and good signal-to-noise ratio characteristics. The readout circuit was fabricated with a $0.35{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal CMOS process for a $128{\times}128$ long wavelength infrared HgCdTe array with a pixel size of $50{\mu}m{\times}50{\mu}m$. The smart reset control with two-step background suppression improves the signal-to-noise ratio to 87dB and the dynamic range to 95.8dB.
Improvement of the radiation beam profile of a medical ultrasonic transducer has been researched in this paper. In order to improve the beam profile, a new transducer structure has been devised that includes both a shaded electrode and a multi-focus lens. For a linear sound source, the beam profile was investigated through finite element analysis, and then the optimal design of the devised structure was carried out by considering such performances as sidelobe level, focal range and beamwidth simultaneously. In the process, the optimal dimension of the devised structure was derived by using the ratio of the focal range to the minimum beamwidth as a performance index. As a result, the beam profile has been improved to have a lower sidelobe level at -20.2 dB and a consistent narrow beamwidth from 30 mm to 160 mm depth with the minimum beamwidth at 2.04 mm. Further, a prototype transducer was fabricated to have the devised structure, and its performance was measured and compared with the analysis results to confirm the validity of the devised transducer structure.
The roughness changes on a fracture surface were analyzed via a multi-stage compression test under high temperatures to assess how the cracks in a rock mass affect groundwater movement. The analyzed samples consist of coarse granitic rocks from approximately 40 and 270 m depth, and fine granitic rocks from 500 m depth. The compression test was conducted on $20{\times}40{\times}5mm$ samples using a loading system where the pressure increases in 10 MPa increments to 120 MPa. A high-resolution 3D confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) was used to observe the surface changes, including the roughness changes, at each pressure step. The roughness change was calculated based on the roughness factor. The experimental results indicate that the roughness of the fracture surface varies with rock type under the stepwise pressure conditions. These data provide a basis for predicting groundwater flow along rock fractures.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a new resin monomer, filler size and polishing technique on the surface roughness of composite resin restorations using confocal laser scanning microscopy. By adding new methoxylated Bis-GMA (Bis-M-GMA, 2,2-bis[4-(2-methoxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) having low viscosity, the content of TEGDMA might be decreased. Three experimental composite resins were made: EX1 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 40 nm nanofillers); EX2 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 20 nm nanofillers); EX3 (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA = 70/30 wt%, 40 nm nanofillers). Filtek Z250 was used as a reference. Nine specimens (6 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) for each experimental composite resin and Filtek Z250 were fabricated in a teflon mold and assigned to three groups. In Mylar strip group, specimens were left undisturbed. In Sof-lex group, specimens were ground with #1000 SiC paper and polished with Sof-lex discs. In DiaPolisher group, specimens were ground with #1000 SiC paper and polished with DiaPolisher polishing points. The Ra (Average roughness), Rq (Root mean square roughness), Rv (Valley roughness), Rp (Peak roughness), Rc (2D roughness) and Sc (3D roughness) values were determined using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The data were statistically analyzed by Two-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparisons test (p = 0.05). The type of composite resin and polishing technique significantly affected the surface roughness of the composite resin restorations (p < 0.001). EX3 showed the smoothest surface compared to the other composite resins (p < 0.05). Mylar strip resulted in smoother surface than other polishing techniques (p < 0.05). Bis-M-GMA. a new resin monomer having low viscosity, might reduce the amount of diluent, but showed adverse effect on the surface roughness of composite resin restorations.
