  • Purpose: This study was intended to gain an in-depth understanding of and explored the experiences and meanings of participating in care services among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A focus group interview approach was adopted. Twenty older adults were interviewed from November to December 2021 using semi-structured interview questions. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Three main themes and seven sub-themes emerged for the elderly people living alone. One main theme was "ambivalence of elderly care services," the second was "desperate need for care services," and the third was "positive changes and expectations experienced with care services." For the elderly people living with their families, two main themes and four sub-themes were identified. One main theme was "care services met within the family system," the second was "needs for care services outside the family system." Conclusion: We aim to provide a basis for strengthening the quality of elderly community care services in the mid- to long-term and establish a system of close linkages between necessary services by understanding the needs of elderly people who live alone or with their families.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the difficulties that elementary school teachers face and the atmosphere of school fields in depth in the course of conducting science experiential learning. For this study, we conducted focus group interviews with five elementary school teachers who have had rich experiences in science field studies. Through interviews, the actual state of experiential learning operation, the operation of science experiential learning including planning, progress and evaluation of experiential learning operation. The main results of this study are as follows: Teachers were most concerned about budget, and were burdened with curriculum reconstruction for science experiential learning. In addition, teachers expressed their lack of expert scientific knowledge with science experiential learning, and difficulties with collaboration with science-specialized teachers. In sum, teachers consider budget, site, and administrative convenience first, rather than effects of science experiential learning. The significance of this study is identifying the selection of topics, methods, educational expectations, and problems of science experiential learning topics, which were difficult to identify in previous studies.

  • This study was conducted to design and apply simulation-based problem-based learning classes, and then analyze the effects of class management using focus group interviews. In paramedicine, practical learning that can respond to various emergency situations based on major knowledge is important. In the case of problem-based learning classes, it is suitable for operating various topics covered by the Department of Paramedicine as it can improve capabilities such as problem-solving strategies, skills, and teamwork by providing practicality related to field situations for learning. This study developed a PBL module focusing on patients with dyspnea and applied it to medical emergencies and practice courses taken by 16 third graders of S University's Paramedicine department. Overall class satisfaction was high from 4.76 to 4.92. In particular, by resetting the learning strategy through PBL classes and experiencing cooperative learning, positive learning outcomes could be obtained and self-efficacy was experienced.

  • In this study, we analyzed the needs of open university students for e-textbooks by conducting focus group interviews (FGIs) and surveys in order to develop an e-textbook that is suited to their needs. The FGIs revealed that readability and portability of e-textbooks were the most important features for students. The surveys showed that of the 276 respondents who participated in the study, only a small number owned smartpads; however, a sizeable number of students intended on purchasing the device in the future. In addition, students' smartpad utilization, time spent reading e-books, and time allotted for studying as opposed to leisure and commercial use of social network services on the smartpad were examined. Students attached importance to the portability, weight, and price of the e-textbook; moreover, they considered the device's ability to support interaction in a variety of ways and rich multimedia resources to be an advantage. Finally, students also felt that e-textbooks should be less expensive than print textbooks; however, they were willing to pay a higher price, depending on the quality of the content.

  • SSI instruction can be an effective tool to promote key competencies for future citizens. Our assumption of the study is that applying the concept of collective intelligence in the context of SSI learning would facilitate the learning. Thus, we designed and implemented Collective Intelligence-based SSI instruction over almost a year and observed the effects of the instruction on enhancing students' collaboration, information management, critical thinking, and communication skills. Twenty 9th grade students enrolled in a science-gifted program voluntarily participated. Data was collected by administering a questionnaire to examine the skills before, in the middle of, and after the instruction, and by conducting classroom observations and focus student group interviews. The results indicated some degree of improvement in their targeted skills. First, they experienced the expansion of their thoughts by actively sharing information and ideas using the web platform. Second, they became more flexible and open to different points of views in order to accomplish a common goal. Third, they appreciated having independent time and space to explore their own positions on the issues and to search necessary information, and believed that the process encouraged them to more pro-actively participate and communicate in the group debates. Lastly, they positively perceived the values that collaboration with diverse group members could produce.

  • This study aims to develop a framework of structural scenarios for chatbot docent that supports visitors' activities in science centers and museums, and to suggest the application examples. For this study, the author adapted Focus Group Interview. As a result, the frameworks of scenarios could be categorized into the Collection of Science and Technology(CST) and Inquiry-Based Exhibition(IBE). These frameworks had dimensions of the primary and storytelling in common. Especially, framework of IBE scenario was added the usage dimension considering the characteristics of interaction between exhibits and visitors. This study could be basic materials for AI chatbot to support exhibition descriptions using the built data, and is expected to be help develop a more visitor-oriented scenarios of activities.

  • This study explored types of failure encountered by elementary school students during the engineering design process and how they coped with them. To achieve this goal, we developed and taught engineering design lessons on water shortages to four fourth-grade classes, observing and interviewing seven focus groups. Our analysis revealed that student failures can be categorized into two main types: those caused by cognitive factors and those influenced by environmental factors. While cognitive failures are typically within students' control, environmental factors are beyond their reach. Our findings also showed that students tended to avoid discussing the root causes of failure and instead relied on ad hoc solutions. Additionally, some students lowered their expectations for success to avoid failure. Based on our findings, we offer practical recommendations for educators to help students learn from their failures in a constructive manner.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status of the second year of application of Integrated Science and Science Laboratory Experiments, which are common courses of high school, and to explore suggestions for curriculum development in the future. To this end, the results of the survey of a total of 244 science-core and general high schools were compared with the survey result of 2018 school year. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine science teachers of the focus group to discuss the current state of curriculum implementation. According to the results, as in the first year, most of the Integrated Science courses were implemented in 6-8 units, and in most schools the number of teachers in charge of Integrated Science per class were 3-4. In the teacher's focus group interview, teachers insisted that Integrated Science requires integrated teaching approaches and is good for generating students' interest, but it is difficult to implement process-based assessment due to issues such as ensuring fairness of assessment. Most of Science Laboratory Experiments courses were implemented in two semesters, one unit per semester, and there was little link between Integrated Science and Science Laboratory Experiments because of the different teaching staff. The school life record entry method of Science Laboratory Experiments has been changed to criterion-based assessment starting in 2019, so students' satisfaction or flow of classes is much better than expected, and teachers can teach without burden. Based on the research results, ways to support the settlement of Integrated Science and Science Laboratory Experiments as common subjects, and ways to improve those subjects in the next curriculum revision were suggested.
