The meaning of zero as a number signifying nothing is introduced as a number 1 less than 1 in the first grade mathematics textbook. In addition, the first appearance of the properties of zero are described by exemplary situations of adding zero, subtracting zero, and multiplying by zero in the first and second grade mathematics textbooks. The meaning and the properties of 0, however, are not explicitly dealt with any longer in the follow-up learning. In this study, we discuss the way of introducing zero and the applications of the properties of zero for solving number sentences so that they could help elementary school students understand the meaning and the properties of zero. Based on these results, we suggest some educational implications on teaching and learning mathematics of zero.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a sexuality education course of study for students in the lower grades of elementary school. Method: On the basis of the sexuality education guidebook for elementary school students published by Korea Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development, the state-designated textbooks for first to third grade were analyzed. Results: 1) In the category of physical and psychological development, physical development and psychosexual development content were covered, but not sexual health content. 2) In the category of understanding of human relationship, marriage and family, and the opposite sex and love were presented but self-determination and selection were only partially presented. 3) In the category of sexual culture and sexual ethics, sexual role in society was covered, but not social environment or equality of the sexes. Conclusion: These results suggest that content on sexuality which is not covered in textbooks for students in lower grades should be included in other school courses or activities in class.

This research is to provide a useful reference for the future revision of textbook by comparative analysis with the textbook in the 4th grade of elementary school in Japan. The results from this research is same as follows: First, Korean curriculum is emphasizing the reasonable problem-solving ability developed on the base of the mathematical knowledge and skill. Meantime, Japanese puts much value on the is focusing on discretion and the capability in life so that they emphasize each person's learning and raising the power of self-learning and thinking. The ratio on mathematics in both company are high, but Japanese ensures much more hours than Korean. Second, the chapter of Korean textbook is composed of 8 units and the title of the chapter is shown as key word, then the next objects are describes as 'Shall we do$\sim$' type. Hence, the chapter composition of Japanese textbook is different among the chapter and the title of the chapter is described as 'Let's do$\sim$'. Moreover, Korean textbook is arranged focusing on present study, however Japanese is composed with each independent segments in the present study subject to the study contents. Third, Japanese makes students understand the decimal as the extension of the decimal system with measuring unit($\ell$, km, kg) then, learn the operation by algorithm. In Korea, students learn fraction earlier than decimal, but, in Japan students learn decimal earlier than fraction. For the diagram, in Korea, making angle with vertex and side comes after the concept of angle, vertex and side is explained. Hence, in Japan, they show side and vertex to present angle.

The purpose of this paper was analyzing the contents of life science area in elementary science textbooks according to Korean science curricula change to get suggestions for the advancement of science curriculum. The framework of content analysis was developed by revising TIMSS 2015 life science evaluation framework. The results of this research were as follows: 'The differences of living things and non-living things appearing in the first grade mostly were not included in the 1st, the 6th and the 2009 revised curricula. Contents emphasizing rural life were appeared from 'Teaching themes period' to the 2nd curriculum period, disappeared from the 3rd curriculum period until the 2009 revised curriculum. Contagious disease was emphasized in all elementary grades in the 1st curriculum period, which reflected a social phenomena emphasizing health and hygiene after the Korean War. Mostly fungus was included until the 7th curriculum period and bacteria and virus were added from the 2007 revised curriculum period. The way of improving health was emphasized continuously.' The differences of living things and non-living things should be included in elementary science curriculum for the correct 'life' concept formation of elementary students. 'Strategies for helping the living of descendants' and 'the heredity of animal and plant' which were appeared in the lower grades, should be included at the higher grades with greater depth. The incoming elementary science textbooks also need to include science contents about evolution in greater depth, along with human health.
It is well known that the low achievement students are easily affected by the ways how the materials are organized and presented. So the studies on trying to find how those students' responses are differed according to the organization or presentation of the materials are necessary. This paper was based on the results of Korean Elementary 3 Grade Students National Diagnosis Assessment on Basic Scholastic Ability in area of mathematics. We analyzed students responses through combining the percents of correct answers with the assessment items. After that, we identified the properties of low achievement students in mathematics and presented some guides which, we thought, are helpful for improvements of mathematics textbooks and teacher guide books.
This research aims to have some implications for revision of curriculum and textbooks by analysing connections between the 2009 revised national curriculum and its textbooks in elementary school mathematics. The results of analyses for 3~4 grades can be summarized in four aspects: Firstly, we noticed that the reconstructed achievement criteria were reflected properly in the textbooks except for use of calculators in 'Numbers and Operations'. Secondly, the analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria suggests that 10 units must receive attention. Especially, the range of decimal numbers for adding and subtracting needs to be corrected. Thirdly, mathematical terms and symbols excluding 'unit fraction' were found in the textbooks. Finally, mathematical processes were also fully reflected in the textbooks. However 'simplifying' as a strategy for problem solving was only missing. This result shows good or poor connections between the curriculum and its textbooks, therefore it is expected to be used effectively to revise the national curriculum for mathematics and its textbooks.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and compare 'Game Activities' of elementary mathematics textbooks developed in the national curriculum revised in 2015, and to find suggestions to improve 'Game Activities' of the textbooks based on the results. The main results of this study are as follows. First, as for materials, various types of materials were used in 'Game Activities'. Also, more various materials were included in 2nd grade textbooks and 1st, 2nd grade teacher's guidebooks than 1st grade textbooks. Second, this study analyzed the patterns of organization. The result showed that group and pair activities accounted for the highest rate among other patterns of organizations. Textbooks should include more pattern types of organizations that teachers could use them properly according to numbers of students in classes. For the 'Game Activities', students need to understand basic concepts of the chapter first. Students with lower levels would have difficulty participating in the 'Game Activities'. Thus, there is a need to include activities for students with lower levels in teachers' guidebooks, reflecting a variety of students levels.

The purpose of this study is to analyze media in the elementary moral textbooks with the information processing model and suggest some ways to boost media literacy within the school library. In this study, the three national moral curriculum for the 4th, 5th and 6th elementary students are assayed. As the results of analysis, the inputs of the elementary moral textbooks are bias toward pictures (visual media) and stories (printed media), its' processing focus on investigation and workbooks using the table and its' outputs are based on the writing, speaking and making (creating). But there are so lack of specific activities to achieve relevant information form the media and the reading strategies of visual media as the elements of inputs. The school library should serve various reading materials considering the develop of reading interest, make workbooks for learning strategies according to the text types and try to secure collaborative teaching time to resolve the bias toward media of inputs, increase information processing activities and improve students' media literacy.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the elementary pre-service teachers' perspectives on the use of the elementary mathematics textbooks by observing mathematics classes at the schools and to present suggestions on the use of textbooks in the mathematics classes. For this study, let 54 pre-service elementary school teachers observe a total of 54 classes (1,299 students) in the first through sixth grades at 15 areas in Seoul city. With the observations of the mathematics classes, the researcher analyzed the pre-service elementary teachers' perspectives on the use of resources including mathematics textbooks in the elementary mathematics classes. As a result of the study, the pre-service teachers recognized that mathematics textbooks are the main material for mathematics classes, but they think that they need to reconstruct the contents of the textbooks for effective teaching and learning mathematics. In addition, various additional materials need to be used in order to help students learn mathematics more effectively, including by differentiated materials. Also, instruments used in the classes were mainly consisted of TV and PPT data. Pre-service teachers were not much satisfied with the contents of the elementary mathematics textbooks. However, they did not feel the need for development of digital textbooks. The researcher suggested a long term research on how to use study materials such as textbooks within the overall mechanism of teaching and learning processes. Also, practical teacher education programs that include applications of textbooks at schools are necessary in order to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and learning.

We aim to investigate whether the activities in the 2015 revised elementary English textbooks are reflected in terms of Multiple Intelligences. Specifically, we analyze three types of activities including project, game, and cultural activities in three types of the 5th grade English textbooks. Additionally, we compare the differences in the Multiple Intelligences according to three different publishers. The data includes three different sorts of fifth-grade English textbook activities. We found that verbal-linguistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and visual-spatial intelligence are heavily involved in project activities. Verbal-linguistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, visual-spatial intelligence, and kinesthetic intelligence are all utilized in game activities. Lastly, cultural activities demonstrate verbal-linguistic and visual-spatial intelligence. In consideration of the diversity of students, we suggest that English textbooks need to consider diverse and well balanced approach to incorporating Multiple Intelligences in order to make the textbooks to meet the needs of the diversity of learners.
