The findings were as follows: first, there were significant correlations among the three factors of children's life satisfaction, ego-resilience, and school adjustment; and secondly, both of their ego-resilience and school adjustment had impacts on their life satisfaction, and their ego-resilience had influences on their life satisfaction via school adjustment. These findings indicate that there is a need for supports at various levels to increase the school adjustment abilities of first graders as well as their ego-resilience in order to improve their life satisfaction.

  • This study compared the perceptions of children and their mothers of the effects of school lunch programs on the children's dietary behaviors in elementary schools. Questionnaires were answered by 425 elementary school students and their 412 mothers in the Busan area. The results indicated: The school lunch program had positive effects on children's dietary behaviors such as understanding healthy meals, correcting unbalanced diets, snack intake, attitude toward the meal, table manners, and table hygiene. However, there were still some negative habits in the home related to snack time, reading books or watching television during mealtime, eating foods before seniors have started. The gender of the children and whether the mothers worked or not produced no significant differences (in most cases). Still mothers more positively perceived the effect of school lunch programs on their children's dietary behaviors than did the children themselves. Thus, the school lunch program had positive effects for a balanced diet and making good eating habits. And, therefore, teachers-as well as the dieticians- should actively regard the school lunch program as an educational activity which can produce positive effects for a balanced diet, and make every endeavor to strengthen their relationship with the home.

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine elementary gifted students' perceptions on bias against creativity utilizing concept mapping approach. Twelve elementary gifted students participated in the group brainstorming and produced 55 final statements. Based on these statements, the multi-dimensional scale and hierarchial cluster analysis using dissimilarity matrix were performed. Average stress value was .30 which is appropriate for a two-dimensional concept mapping study. In addition, a questionnaire survey using likert 6 points scale was carried out targeting 132 elementary gifted students to analyze the degree of sympathy on their anti-creativity bias perception. The findings are as follow: First, four categories were concluded dividing gifted students' perceptions on bias against creativity from the hierarchial cluster analysis with X-Y coordinate matrix, these were 'Contradictory attitudes to creativity', 'Low evaluation for creativity', 'Forced to predetermined rules and ideas', and 'Aversion to new things'. Second, elementary gifted students were sympathetic to the order 'Forced to predetermined rules and ideas'(M=4.16), 'Aversion to new things'(M=3.68), 'Contradictory attitudes to creativity'(M=3.55) and 'Low evaluation for creativity'(M=3.30). This study aims to examine, analyze and categorize various relevant factors related to elementary gifted students' perceptions on bias against creativity. Implications of the study related to the present and future creative education were discussed in depth.

  • It is the purpose of this study to propose improvement options and guidance methods for public design around elementary schools from the perspective of child friendly cities. The study first takes the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a benchmark, and integrates relevant United Nations documents on child friendly cities and those on child friendly cities in Shenzhen to derive five principles of public design around child friendly schools, namely, safe environment, protective measures, pedestrian friendly environment, independent environment for going out, convenient and fun environment. Subsequently, this study investigates the public design of 25 elementary schools in Futian District, Shenzhen, China, evaluates the quality level of public design according to the five principles, and points out the problems that exist in public design with lower quality level. Furthermore, in response to the existing problems of public design around elementary schools in Shenzhen, this study improves them from three aspects: public space, public facilities and public media design. More importantly, the design reinforces the safety and child protection of the environment, facilitates children's walking and independent going out, and provides a convenient and fun design that meets the physical and psychological needs of children, designed to be child-friendly. Not only does this design provide guidance for the construction of the environment around the elementary school in Shenzhen, but also provides guidelines for the construction of a child-friendly city in Shenzhen.

  • This study investigated the effects of a nutrition education program which used children's books, on students' food preferences and eating behavior. The program used seven children's books on the subject of food and nutrition, and included diverse learning activities based on Multiple Intelligences. The subjects were divided into two groups: control and experimental. The control group took only the regular practical arts lessons, while the experimental group took the additional lessons of this program. The results were as followed. First, the food preferences of the experimental group increased for various foods, expecially fish, beans, vegetables, and seaweed, for which their preferences had been low, while their preferences for processed foodstuffs decreased. Second, the eating behavior of the experimental group improved more than that of the control group. Thus, this program had positive effects on the children's food preferences and eating behavior. Programs such as these can help children to participate in learning activities with greater interest, and to learn various subjects in books. In addition, this study suggests that children's books can be valuable materials in nutrition education.
