  • These days, the importance of the mathematics interaction is strongly emphasized, which leads to the need of research on how the interaction is being practiced in the math class and what can be the desirable interaction in terms of mathematical thinking. To figure out the correlation between the mathematical interaction patterns and mathematical thinking, it also classifies mathematical thinking levels into the phases of recognizing, building-with and constructing. we can say that there are all of three patterns of the mathematics interactions in the class, and although it seems that the funnel pattern is contributing to active interaction between the students and teachers, it has few positive effects regarding mathematical thinking. In other words, what we need is not the frequency of the interaction but the mathematics interaction that improves students' mathematical thinking. Therefore, we can conclude that it is the focus pattern that is desirable mathematics interaction in the class in the view of mathematical thinking.

  • A transition from elementary to secondary school, and among grades, among learning contents is a essential problem in education. A connectivity between learning contents is important in student's growth and development. A gap between lower grades and higher grades in elementary school is no less extensive than a gap between elementary mathematics and secondary mathematics. In this paper, we start with a critical mind about a transition and connectivity between lower grades and higher grades in elementary school. In order to compare between elementary grades, we firstly focus 4th grade mathematics which finish lower grades and start higher grades at the same time. First, we make up a questionnaire to 4th grade students and teachers in charge 4th grade. A questionnaire is composed of questions about the degree of difficulty in the learning(and teaching) of 4th grade mathematics comparing with 3rd grade mathematics. Second, we compare to lower grades lessons(1st grade) and 4th grade lessons using a qualitative method. we analyze the lesson contents, activities and time through 'analysis of the learning course'. And we compare the pattern of eliciting questions, question patterns, nomination patterns and feedback patterns between 1st grade and 4th grade lessons. We hope that this paper is a fundamental sources in investigating a connectivity between lower grades and higher grades in elementary mathematics in the future.

  • The objective of this study is to describe the status of operation of after-school science activities in elementary school and offer suggestions for the activation of such programs by targeting parents who participated in an open class, and examining their recognition of the program. To achieve this, announcement sheets for after-school science activities in 809 elementary schools in Gyeonggi-do were collected to examine the class names, class fees, material costs, and management status of class hours. In addition, 36 parents who participated in an open class were targeted, and their recognition of the program was analyzed using the results of a questionnaire. A draft of the questionnaire was developed by revising and complementing the 2013 customer satisfaction survey of the living science class of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. The final questionnaire was completed by consulting 1 science education professor and 12 Master's candidates in science education for advice on the validity of the questionnaire content and terminology. The collected data were analyzed using a statistical program. Based on the results of the study, the following suggestions are proposed for the activation of after-school science activities in elementary school. First, the needs of education consumers (parents) should be identified and reflected persistently to activate after-school science activities in elementary school. Second, a science program that reflects the demand and choice of education consumers (parents) needs to be developed for the continuous activation of after-school science activities in elementary school.

  • This study analyzed the process of establishing a social structure in a third-grade mathematics classroom for one semester and explored learning processes based on various social interactions and relationships between the teacher and students. In the early phase of the semester, main foci were placed on establishing an overall social norms and basic social structure for effective mathematical learning. In the middle phase of the semester, an emphasis among students' interactions was given to exploration of mathematical concepts. Students tended to ask whatever they did not know exactly and clearly understood what to explain. In the late phase of the semester, students' individual disposition was further considered. Disciplinary personality traits including intellectual courage, honesty, consideration, and cooperation were emphasized along with mathematical exploration. Based on these research results, this study was intended to provide implications for implementing more meaningful mathematics lessons by fully considering not only mathematical connections but also social connections.

  • Indoor airborne bacterial and fungal concentrations were examined at classrooms and corridors of 3 elementary schools in Ulsan. Airborne microorganisms were collected with an impaction-type air sampler using plate count agar and dichloran rose bengal chloramphenicol agar. During the semester, concentrations of bacteria ranged $168{\sim}3,887 MPN/m^3$ at classrooms and $168{\sim}6,339 MPN/m^3$ at corridors, while those of fungi ranged $34{\sim}389 MPN/m^3$ at classrooms and $91{\sim}507 MPN/m^3$ at corridors. The bacterial concentrations showed larger variations between situations and schools compared to those of fungi. When airborne bacteria were isolated and identified, 84% were observed as Gram-positive, and Micrococcus spp. was the most abundant group with 61% of tested isolates, followed by genus Staphylococcus with 10%. The Micrococcus spp. isolates, of which 75% were identified as M. luteus, appeared to be from human origins. The protective pigments and substantial cell wall of Micrococcus may provide selective advantage for their survival in the air. We also isolated and identified 15 genera of filamentous fungi. The most common culturable fungi were Cladosporium, Aspergillus and Penicillium, and these 3 genera were 69% of fungal isolates. Genus Stachybotrys, of which S. chartarum is a well known producer of many potent mycotoxins, was also detected from one of the schools. further systematic studies are necessary with an emphasis on species identification and mycotoxin production of isolated fungal genera, including Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Stachybotrys.
