  • The flipped learning is an inverted teaching model where students learn the basic concepts using short videos at home and then come to class to enable effective practice and interactions among teachers and students. However, due to the students' lack of self-regulated competence, most students have difficulties of comprehending the instructional materials out of class by themselves. In this paper, we develop an interactive app for active flipped learning in the mathematics courses in the elementary schools. We examine the effectiveness of the active flipped learning on learners groups with different achievement levels in learning 4th grade mathematics concepts in the elementary schools. The pretest and posttest survey results show that the proposed flipped learning approach has better performance compared to the traditional flipped learning approach.

  • This study analyzed student noticing in a lesson that emphasized relational understanding of equal signs for first graders from four aspects: centers of focus, focusing interactions, mathematical tasks, and nature of the mathematical activity. Specifically, the instructional factors that emphasize the relational understanding of equal signs derived from previous research were applied to a first-grade addition and subtraction unit, and then lessons emphasizing the relational understanding of equal signs were conducted. Students' noticing in this lesson was comprehensively analyzed using the focusing framework proposed in the previous study. The results showed that in real classroom contexts centers of focus is affected by the structure of the equation and the form of the task, teacher-student interactions, and normed practices. In particular, we found specific teacher-student interactions, such as emphasizing the meaning of the equals sign or using examples, that helped students recognize the equals sign relationally. We also found that students' noticing of the equation affects reasoning about equation, such as being able to reason about the equation relationally if they focuse on two quantities of the same size or the relationship between both sides. These findings have implications for teaching methods of equal sign.

  • This study aims to figure out the characteristics of the mathematical ability of multicultural Korean elementary school learners. This was done by analyzing the results of a mathematics diagnostic test given to multicultural Korean first and second year elementary school students. The findings of this study mainly support the following three. First, it was indicated that, regardless of whether the students are multicultural or not, more second-year students had difficulty in understanding mathematics than the first-year students. Specifically, a higher percentage of second-year students were below the reference point (cut-off point) than was the case in the first-year learners, which pattern of the overall Korean students was consistent with that of multicultural Koreans. Second, concerning the sub-fields of mathematics, higher proportion of the students fell below the cut-off point in 'numbers and arithmetics' area than in 'measure and geometry,' which pattern was again the same with the multicultural students. Third, it was implied that, in addition to mathematically more complex questions, linguistically complex sentential representations contributed to increasing the difficulty of the test items. It is suggested that care be taken to enhance linguistic processing and to employ well-defined terms.

  • In the Netherlands, Streefland(Elbers, 2003) gave a solution on how teachers can help students to participate in the process of knowledge construction by investigating constructions and activities of a community of inquiry for a primary school students(between 11 and 13 years of age). In Australia, Goos(2004) analyzed the teacher's role in creating a classroom culture of inquiry, which appeared to be taken for granted by the Grade 12 group, for the Grade 11 students by classroom observation and interviews. In Korea, because of diverse obstacles with a university entrance examination, a study about teacher's role in inquiry-oriented instruction for high school mathematics schooling has rarely appeared in the literature. The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher's role for promoting and managing inquiry-oriented mathematics instruction effectively by a case study. To fulfill this purpose, we develop inquiry-oriented instruction model by investigating teacher's role as an assistant for helping students to do mathematical activity.

  • When mathematicians solve the new problems, they present the solutions to their colleagues for getting the approval. If the solution is accepted, it will be theorems. This phenomenon also happens to classrooms in elementary and secondary school. That is main reason to emphasize mathematical communication activities in mathematics education. This study is aimed to develop teaching and learning model for the improvement of mathematical communication ability, applicate the teaching and learning model to two groups and analyze for mathematical thoughts. This study is a case study of 3rd grader's activities. Eight students, four are group applied the teaching and learning model and four are traditional group. The results have been drawn as follows: First, students in the teaching and learning model group induced richer interactions for student's understanding and investigation when we compare to those of traditional group. Second, students in the teaching and learning model group have the chance to explain their thoughts. And we can observe students to clear on their thought through speaking and discussing. This model makes students to enhance organizing, forming and clearing in their mathematical thoughts and is effective to estimate of students thought for teacher.
