체리나무는 앵두나무아과(Drupaceae) 벚나무속(Prunus) 앵두나무아속에 속하며 유럽 중남부와 소아시아가 원산지이다. 특히 온대지역에 잘 적응하는 체리나무는 재배기간 중 비가 적은 건조한 기후에 적합하다. 최근 국내에서 체리 소비가 급격히 증가함에 따라 체리 수입량[6,454톤('11)→15,855톤('19)]이 꾸준히 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 또한 국내에서 체리나무 재배에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 농경지 및 산지에 식재되어 생산량[289톤('09)→656톤('14)] 및 재배면적[60ha('08)→144ha('14)]도 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 그러나 체리나무의 산지재배관련 연구는 전무한 실정으로 고품질 체리의 안정적 생산이 가능한 재배기술 개발이 시급히 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 산지재배 체리나무의 생육, 결실 및 과실품질에 대한 기초자료를 확보하기 위하여 실시하였다. 공시품종은 '라핀(Lapins)'으로 대목은 '기셀라 6(Gisela 6)'을 사용한 3년과 4년생 체리나무를 조사하였다. 체리나무의 생육특성 조사 결과, 수고 및 근원경은 3년생 체리나무 234.0±23.0 cm, 5.1±0.7 cm로 나타났고 4년생 체리나무는 346.0±27.0 cm, 7.3±0.9 cm으로 조사되었다. 본당 착과수는 3년생 체리나무의 경우 과실이 착과되지 않았고 4년생 체리나무는 563.6±42.9개로 조사되었다. 4년생 체리나무의 과실특성을 조사한 결과, 입중 8.1±0.9 g, 당도 16.3 °Brix, 경도 9.8 N, 산도 1.3%로 조사되었으며, 본당 수확량은 4.6±0.3 kg으로 예측할 수 있었다.

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of Cherry Valley and Grimaud strain. A total of two hundred eighty eight, one day old duck breeders (Cherry Valley and Grimaud strain) were randomly divided into two groups with 4 replicates of 36 birds each and fed a commercially available diet for 24 weeks. Overall body weight gain was significantly higher in Cherry Valley (3,064 g) than in Grimaud strain (2,851 g). Feed intake was significantly increased in Grimaud strain compared with Cherry Valley strain (p<0.05). Viability of Grimaud strain showed 100.0% and was higher than that of Cherry Valley strain. Uniformity was not statistically different between Cherry Valley and Grimaud strains.

2003년말 발병한 조류인플루엔자의 파동을 이겨내고 1년 9개월이라는 최단기간에 화의종결을 이뤄내 완전한 경영정상화를 이룬 체리부로가 7개월여만에 제 2의 도약을 위한 힘찬 날개짓을 시작했다. 올해로 창사 15주년을 맞이하는 (주)체리부로(대표이사 김인식)는 지난 9월 7일 충북 진천 본사에서 지역 국회의원 등 정관계 인사와 관련 단체 및 업체 대표, 체리부로 농가협의회장 및 회원농가 등 약 1천여명이 참석한 가운데 하루 30만수의 닭을 가공할 수 있는 신축공장 준농식을 갖고, 본격 가동에 들어갔다.

Cherries (Prunus avium L) were selected at the light red (LR) and dark red (DR) stages of maturation. Soluble solid content and the physicochemical properties of fresh 'Bing' cherries were analyzed to identify an instrumental nondestructive attribute reflecting changes in sweetness. Soluble solid content was significantly correlated with various physicochemical properties (firmness, color, and acid level) in LR-stage cherries. In DR-stage cherries, only firmness was positively correlated with soluble solid content. A positive correlation was found between soluble solid content and firmness of 200 randomly selected cherries. Thus, flesh firmness may be a useful quality factor indicating potential consumer acceptance of 'Bing' cherries.

'Bing' sweet cherries (P. avium L.) were coated with four different coating materials at 1% concentration ($Semperfresh^{(R)}$, calcium caseinate, chitosan, or TIC $Pretested^{(R)}$ colloid 911)and stored at $2.0^{\circ}C$ and 88% RH up to 35 days. The influence of different coating materials on the storability of fresh cherries was investigated. $Semperfresh^{(R)}$ coatings significantly improved overall quality of fresh cherries by decreasing weight loss and improving color stability, and chitosan-based coatings were effective in controlling mold incidence. However, colloid 911 and calcium caseinate coatings did not show significant benefit in preventing quality deterioration of fresh cherry during storage, probably due to their hydrophilic nature leads to exacerbated weight loss and shriveling with the possible interactions between coating materials and cherries epidermal layers.

Withania somnifera has been used in folk medicine to treat various ailments for centuries. In this studies to investigate the whitening effect of Withania somnifera extracts as an active ingredient for whitening cosmetics, the antioxidant capacity and the effects of Withania somnifera extracts on melanogenesis in B16-F10 melanoma cells were identified. Withania somnifera extracts significantly reduced both tyrosinase activity and melanin content in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, it was found that Withania somnifera extracts decreased ${\alpha}-MSH$ (melanocyte-stimulating hormone)-induced tyrosinase activity and MITF(microphthalmia associated transcription factor) protein expression. These data indicate that Withania somnifera extracts attenuate ${\alpha}$-MSH-stimulated melanin synthesis by modulating MITF expression and that they may be a useful therapeutic agent for treating hyperpigmentation and an ingredient of whitening cosmetics.
