We analyze the effect of the minimum wage on employment using time series data forr groups of individuals most affected by the minimum wage: young males (18 to 24 years old), young females (18 to 22 years old), old males (60 years and older) and old females (60 years and older). Our findings are as follows. First, a unit root test says that the variables like minimum wages and employments are non-stationary variables and they have cointegrational relations each other. It says that in this case, VEC is more suitable than OLS or VAR. Second, an increase of the minimum wage is found to have a weak but persistently negative effect on employment.
This study aims to identify changes in early work career of youth cohort entering the labor market pre and post-the economic crisis and compare career pathway types of different cohorts. Labor market experiences of youth cohort were constructed by sequencing the number of organizations, kinds of jobs, the scale of the business, and type of employment. In addition, a holistic sequence was created by including complementary factors. In this sense, the labor market experience in this study was conceptualized as a process involving continuous sequences and hierarchical and orderly changes which differs from a simple job mobility. Sequence analysis involving Optimal Matching method was conducted to examine whether such cohort-differences in labor market experiences were related to differences in distribution of career pathway types. The result showed that the post-economic crisis cohort had a relatively higher likelihood of falling into the non-employment type, unemployment type, non-corporate employment type, irregular employment type, and mobile employment type. These findings provide empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that the employment precariousness of cohort has exacerbated after the economic crisis.
In this study, the housing-related characteristics of the youth are reviewed using data from the 4th - 14th Youth Panel Survey(YP2007) of the Korea Employment Information Service in the period 2010 - 2020. The factors that affect the characteristics of their dwelling are analysed. As a result, males, highly educated, and employed people are more likely to live in their own homes and apartments, but many of them seem to be living with their parents. On the contrary, economically independent young people tend to occupy their dwellings in the form of jeonsei/monthly rent and live in multi-family units, villas, and officetel. To support the youth in overcoming their key issues such as housing affordability, jobs, and marriage, so that they can play their roles, the cost of homeownership and rent should be tailored to their economic situations.
Like most developed countries, South Korea is experiencing a severe lack of seafarers. Because young people's demands for a high quality of life has led them to seek shore-based careers. The wage difference between seafaring and shore-based careers has been decreasing gradually, however South Korea's unique Boarding Service Reserve System Policy has helped recruit and retain young sailors and, since 2017, the government has focused on creating new jobs and stabilizing the status of irregular workers in both private and public sectors. It specifically established the Economic, Social & Labor Council to carefully analyze seafarers' employment stability, which previously had been overlooked in the country. This research used the Binary Logit Model (BLM) to analyze the determinants of seafarers' employment stability in both permanent and non-permanent positions. We found that seafarers' employment stability correlated highly with their education level. This means that seafarers who graduated from the above mentioned two maritime universities would have more job stablity than those who graduated from maritime high schools or general universities. Other independent variables, such as the shipping company, vessel, hip management companies, work assignment, rank, and license had no significant impact on employment stability.

Since the global financial crisis, the average youth employment rate in OECD countries dropped from 54% in 2007 to 50.8% in 2013 while the average youth unemployment rate jumped from 9.7% in 2007 to 13.4% in 2013. A similar trend was seen in Korea, with a decrease of the youth employment rate from 42.6% in 2007 to 41.5% in 2015. The country's youth unemployment rate increased from 7.2% in 2007 to 9.2% in 2015. The low youth employment rate has quickly become a social problem not only in Korea but also worldwide. The Korean construction industry will gradually move its focus of investment from quantitative growth to investing in qualitative growth of the sector. In this sense, it is imperative to create jobs for construction engineers and train global talents. This study analyzed the presence of construction engineers and the employment status of university graduates in Korea to suggest ways to create jobs for young construction engineers. To train global talents in the construction engineering sector, it will be necessary to not only establish middle-long term plans but also change the perception of the construction industry from 3D (dirty, difficult, dangerous) to 3C (clean, clear, creative) along with appropriate infrastructure supporting the industry.
This study was designed to verify that the positive relationship between career management behavior and turnover intention is mediated by employability. Futhermore, investigation whether work-life balance and communication climate moderate this relationship was also the purpose of this study. The results from 300 office workers younger than 34 that (1) employability mediated the relationship between career management behavior and turnover intention, (2) the moderating effect of work-life balance about mediating effect of employability was not statistically significant, but when the level of work-life balance was high, the relationship between employability and turnover intention was reinforced, (3) the moderating effect of communication climate against mediating effect of employability was not statistically significant, and the moderating effect of communication climate between employability and turnover intention was also not found. Based on this non-intuitive results, researcher offered new interpretation which can be acquired from rejections of hypotheses, implications, limitations, and the proposal for future research.
The purpose of this study is to examine the determinant factors of maintaining employment in young adults with intellectual disabilities who took part in a vocational training program and was employed. The determinant factors were from four areas, such as physical competence, job-related task performance, emotional behaviors, and functional adaptive behaviors. 64 young adults with intellectual disabilities participated in this study. The participants' capacities were examined during the program, and then their job retention was examined through a follow-up survey six month after the end of the program. Tests contained hand dexterity, grasp strength, finger strength, visual-perception, Survey of Functional Adaptive Behaviors, and Observational-Emotional Inventory-Revised. After data collection, the data were analyzed by binary logistic regression. The results indicated that dexterity in both hands (OR= 1.123) in physical competence, anxiety (OR= .733) and socialization (OR= .429) in emotional behaviors, and academic skills (OR= 1.077) and vocational skills (OR= 1.542) in functional adaptive behaviors were significant determinant factors. These significant factors which affected job attention were consistent with the results from previous studies, and should be considered when designing and constructing an effective career and vocational education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
The purpose of this study is to examine young Koreans' welfare attitudes towards youth policy and to analyze the determinants on such attitudes. The main results are as follows. Many young people(72.1%) understand that government should be responsible for youth support and spending on youth support policy(49.5%) and job support policy(59.7%) should be expanded than current level. But only 24.1% approved the provision of youth allowance. There was a significant in-group heterogeneity among the young generation in terms of support for expanding fiscal spending for youth policy and youth allowance provision. Results from the regression analysis indicated sex, age, education level, employment status, type of housing affect attitudes towards youth policy and statistical significance of them was different according to each analytic model. Korean young adult generally perceived that our society was unequal and the higher the perception of inequality, the higher support for youth policy. These results implicates that in-group heterogeneity among youth generation in terms of socio-economic needs and subjective perception should be regarded as important factor in the youth policy making process.
This study examines the realities and causes of youth and new college graduate unemployment, and seeks some assignments for mitigating youth and new college graduate unemployment. An analysis of the realities and causes of youth and new college graduate unemployment is summarized as follows. First, youth unemployment rate, which rapidly increased after the IMF economic crisis, slowly decreased after 2000, but was still somewhat higher in 2002 than that before the IMF. Second, new college graduate unemployment rate, which rapidly increased after the IMF economic crisis, slowly decreased after 2000 and became a similar level to that before the IMF economic crisis, but the number of the unemployed new college graduates highly increased after the IMF. Third, an analysis of the causes of youth unemployment shows that economic growth and the employment elasticity of economic growth negatively affect the unemployment rate, and the rate of entrance into colleges positively affects the unemployment rate. Fourth, an analysis of the causes of new college graduate unemployment demonstrates that economic growth and the employment elasticity of economic growth negatively affect the unemployment rate, and the increase rate of new college graduates, the college graduate/youth population ratio, and the time trend positively affect the unemployment rate. These results suggest several implications for mitigating the unemployment rate of the youth and new college graduates. First, in order to increase labor demand, emphasis must be placed on preparing economic conditions which can raise economic growth rate and on fostering industries and occupations which have high employment elasticity. Second, in the aspect of labor supply, it is necessary to adjust the number of new college graduates corresponding to labor demands in industries. Third, in order to redress the mismatch between the demand and the supply of the youth labor market, attention should be paid to remedying educational systems such as the activation of vocational education and training in middle and high schools and the reformation of college education to match the education and training provided in colleges and the skills requirements of the world of work, and preparing a unified program to support the youth unemployed systematically and synthetically.
Using the 1st to 13th rounds of occupational history data of the Korea Employment Information Service's Youth Panel (YP2007), this study explores the trends and characteristics of the youth labor market in Seoul. We further empirically investigated the job duration and wage determinants of youth employed in Seoul. The results confirm that workers who have a higher income and a higher consistency with their majors are less likely to leave. In addition, we find that workers in full-time, householders, or labor unions have a higher income if they are men and work in large companies. In particular, compared to the reference group (appropriate academic background, appropriate skill), mismatches in the lack of education and skill showed a wage increase effect of 4.9% and 5.5%, respectively. For the major consistency, the wage of the matched major group is 3.8% higher than the non-matched major group.
