  • In Fukuoka, the natural enemies of Protopulvinaria mangiferae were confirmed as six primary parasitoids, three hyperparasitoids, and six predators. Among the primary parasitoids, Aneristus ceroplastae, Microterys flavus, and Coccophagus yoshidae were relatively abundant in Fukuoka. Aneristus ceroplastae and Coccophagus yoshidae were solitary endoparasitoid, whereas Microterys flavus was a gregarious endoparasitoid. Tetrastichus sp. was a hyperparasitoid and solitarily ectoparasitic to the pupae of Aneristus ceroplastae and Microterys flavus. The seasonal fluctuation of parasitisim and adult emergence of the important parasitoids was investigated in Fukuoka. Among the predatorys, Rhyzobius forestieri and Chilocorus kuwanae were relatively abundant, and seasonal fluctuation of adult emergence and consumption of the host were studied. As the first record from Japan, Rhyzobius forestieri was collected on leaves of Elaeocarpus sylvestris with heavy infestation of Protopulvinaria mangiferae.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the amounts and preferences of Oligota kashmirica benefica to 3 species of phytophagous mites and cannibalism. The number of mites consumed by an adult beetle tended to increase as prey density and temperature go up. In the constant temperature of 25$^{\circ}C$, average number of consumed adult mites by an adult of O. kashmirica benefica to Panonychus citri, Tetranychus urticae and T. kanzawai were 21.9, 13.5, and 14.1 for a day, respectively. The number of mites consumed by larva of O, kashmirica benefica tended to increase as the larva grow up. First, 2nd and 3rd larva of the beetle consumed 2.8, 11.2 and 25.4 adult of citrus red mite (P. citri) for a day, respectively. Total number of mites consumed during larval stage (5 days, 25$^{\circ}C$) to P. citri, T. urticae and T. kanzawai were 77.7, 61.3 and 73.0, respectively. The larva and adult beetle did not prefer specific species in the P. citri, T. urticae and T. kanzawai, and when there was no diet, few incidents of cannibalism between different developmental stage were observed.

  • Field survey for Orius spp., predacious natural enemies of thrips pests, on several plants by beating or sweeping method revealed that O. sauteri, O. strigicollis, O. minutus, and O. nagaii habituated in open fields or in greenhouses of Korea. Among them, O. sauteri was the most dominant species at all areas (83.0~92.5%), followed by O. strigicollis and O. minutus. Especially, O. sauteri exclusively dominated on the economically important crops such as soybean, red pepper, and watermelon. On the other hand, O. strigicallis and O. nagaii occurred mainly on ornamental plants including chrysanthemum and rose and on rice, respectively, during summer-autumn season. The seasonal occurrence varied depending on the plant. Initial population of Orius spp. was first observed on white clover in late May, followed by on soybean, red pepper, an buck wheat in early June, indcating that movement of Orius spp. relates to the flowering time of the plant. Peak of Orius spp. abundance was found first in July and secondly in August or September. On white clover and buck wheat the first peak of abundance was one week earlier than on soybean and red pepper. Therefore, we suppose that wild plants such as white clover can serve as a reservoir for Orius spp. after overwintering.

  • From the surveys of 2005 and 2006 in Korea, Trissolicus nigripedius was found in four locations, i.e., Andong, Miryang, Namhae, and Suwon, and one of the major egg parasitoids of Dolycoris baccarum. T. nigripedius was also found to parasitize two other soybean bugs, Riptortus clavatus and Piezodous hybneri, from the field collection in 2005. Host acceptance behaviors of T. nigripedius consisting of drumming, oviposition, and marking were observed and compared on five species of soybean bugs. T. nigripedius showed the complete host acceptance behaviors on the eggs of D. baccarum, P. hybneri, and Halyomorpha halys. But T. nigripedius emerged only from the eggs of D. baccarum (96%) and P. hybneri (75%) after 24 hours of exposure. T. nigripedius did not mark on the eggs of R. clavatus and Nezara antennata during the observation of behavior, hence no egg deposition was made. However, T. nigripedius parasitized 20% and killed 30% of the eggs of R. clavatus when 24 hours were given for parasitization. T. nigripedius would be a potential biological control agent of D. baccarum and P. hybneri with ability of giving additional mortality on R. clavatus in soybean field.

  • To protect plants from damage caused by Panonychus citri (McGregor), practical methods for the use banker plants have been developed to provide a habitat and augment natural enemies of several agricultural pests. The average population density of predatory mites on an Oxalis corniculata (creeping sorrel) sod culture was significantly higher (three times) than that on normal sod culture. Furthemore, the average population density of spider mites on creeping sorrel sod culture was significantly lower (3.7 times) than when weed control was practiced. Average consumption of the eggs and females of Tetranychina harti (Ewing) by Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females was approximately 1.96 eggs and 1.93 females per day, respectively. Phytoseiulus persimilis AthiasHenriot females never consumed T. harti. However, total development time of T. harti from egg to adult on O. corniculata was 17.4 days, and hatchability and survival rate were 77.5% and 84.8%, respectively.

  • This study carried out to evaluate toxicology of Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and Melia azedarach against natural enemies in the laboratory, and the diamond backmoth, Plutella xylostella, on chinese cabbage. In the evaluation of the toxicity on predatory mite of phytoseiid Phytoseiulus persimilis, Hypoaspis aculeifer, Amblyseius cucumeris, A. wormersleyi, A. swirskii, the two plant extracts were classified into moderate selective toxicity as recommended by international organization of biocontrol (IOBC). The mummies parasitic natural enemies, Trichogramma evanescens, Aphidius ervi, Aphidius colemani, Eretmocerus eremicus, Encarsia formosa were found to be relatively safe to the plant extracts except Eretemocerus eremicus. In the field study for the control of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, single spray of C. cinerariefolium indicated that the control effect dropped from 21th days after the spraying. In the 3 times of spray with 7 says intervals, the mortality effect low at the beginning, but increased to 91.1 at 21 days after spraying. Single spray of M. azedarach showed a 96.7% mortality on P. xylostella at 14 days after spraying, and thereafter decreased. In the three times of spray with 7 days intervals of M. azedarach, the mortality of P. xylostella was 100% at 14 days and its effect was maintained to 28 days after treatment. Consequently, it was suggested that M. azedarach be sprayed before C. cinerariaefolium application.

  • Development and predation of an aphidophagous gall midge, Aphidoletes aphydimyza (Rondani) , on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, were studied under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The developmental threshold temperature of the gall midge larvae was estimated to be $13^{\circ}C$. Larval and total developmental periods were 5.3 and 29 days at 25 $\pm$$2^{\circ}C$. The gall midge attacked more aphids as increasing density of peach aphids, and consumed 4 out of 10 peach aphids per day in a petri dish (9 cm in diameter) at maximum. In green house, the gall midge could control the density of the green peach aphids efficiently with a delayed density dependent-like pattern.

  • The susceptibility of the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus to extracts of Melia azedarach, Piper nigrum, Syringa velutina and their mixtures was evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In treatments with plant extracts tested, 76-86% of adult female predators survived after 7 days after treatment. Adult female predators treated with plant extracts tested produced 68.3-81.1% as many eggs as did control females and eclosion of eggs deposited by treated predators was not affected. Moreover, treatment of plant extracts tested showed no toxic effect on N. californicus eggs and produced 100% hatchability. Survival of N. californicus nymphs was not seriously affected by exposure to the plant extracts tested. Immatures of N. californicus survived on the leaf disc treated with plant extracts tested and 78-90% of immature predators reached adulthood. These results suggest that extracts of Melia azedarach, Piper nigrum, Syringa velutina and their mixtures expected to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management program with N. californicus.
