  • Piecewise Integrated Composite (PIC) is a new concept to design composite structures of multiple stacking angles both for in-plane direction and through the thickness direction in order to improve stiffness and strength. In the present study, PIC beam was suggested based on 3D training data instead of 2D data, which did offer a limited behavior of beam characteristics, with enhancing the stiffness accompanied by reduced tip deformation. Generally training data were observed from the designated reference finite elements, and preliminary FE analysis was conducted with respect to regularly distributed reference elements. Also triaxiality values for each element were obtained in order to categorize the loading state, i.e. tensile, compressive or shear. The main FE analysis was conducted to predict the mechanical characteristics of the PIC beam.

  • The existing analytical solutions for rectangular plates with three edges clamped and the other free are derived based on nondimensional differential equation and their characteristics are analyzed. Since Timoshenko and Woinowsky-Krieger's method (1959) can give solutions for the case limited to the aspect ratio of the plates less than one, this method are proved to be impractical for the bending moment calculation of the plates under consideration. Horii and Moto's method(1968) are modified by adding stabilizing terms to suppress overflow in the matrix computation, from which the series solution with maximum 150 terms can be obtained. By use of the series solution the convergence of computed bending moments is tested. The modified method can be shown to calculate the deflection properties for the plates with wide range of aspect ratios, but the computed x moment at the corner points formed by the free edge and the clamped edges can not satisfy the boundary condition and the cause of problem is discussed in detail.

  • A floating offshore structure has high tendency to occur the buckling when compressive, bending and shear loads applied. When the buckling is occurred, in-plane stiffness of structure is remarkably decreased. And it has a harmful effect on the local structural strength as well as global structural strength. In the present study, it has been investigated the ultimate strength of tubular members which is located between a floater and a damping plate of the floating pendulum wave energy converter. Nonlinear finite element method is conducted using the initial imperfection according to 1st buckling mode which is obtained from the elastic buckling analysis. It is also noted the ultimate bending strength characteristic varying with a diameter, thickness and stiffeners of the tubular member.

  • This study carried out three-dimensional finite element analysis and structural safety evaluation of attachable roadside barriers. The effects of diaphragm distance and the number of bolts on displacements and maximum stresses for various parameters are studied using the LS-DYNA finite element program for this study. In this study, the existing finite element analysis of barriers using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study static behaviors and structural safety of the barrier with module structures connected by anchor bolt inserted through concrete bridge decks. The numerical results for six parameters are verified by comparing different models with displacements and stress distribution occurred in the barrier and shows good structural performance.

  • Ship structures are subject to severe environmental loads causing appreciable hull girder bending which in turn affects the piping system attached to the main hull in the form of a displacement load. While this load may cause failure in the pipes, loops have been widely adopted as a means of preventing this failure, with the idea that they may lower the stress level in a pipe by absorbing some portion of the displacement load. But since such loops also have some negative effects, such as causing extra manufacturing cost, deteriorating the function of the pipe, and occupying extra space, the number and dimensions of the loops adopted need to be minimized. This research developed design formulas for pipe loops, modeling them as frames composed of beam elements, where not only bending but also shear deflection is taken into account. The accuracy of the proposed design formulas was verified by comparing two results respectively obtained by the proposed formulas and MSC/NASTRAN. The paper concludes with a sample example showing the efficiency of the proposed formulas.

  • Four series of fiber reinforced concrete deep beams without shear reinforcement were tested to determine their cracking shear strengths and ultimate shear capacities. Results of tests on 20 reinforced concrete deep beams (including 16 containing steel fibers) are reported. Three parameters were varied in the study, namely, the concrete compressive strength, volume fraction of fibers, and the shear span to depth ratio. The effects of fiber incorporation on failure modes, deflections. strains, cracking shear strength, and ultimate shear strength have been examined. Resistance to shear stresses have been found to be improved by the inclusion of fibers. Based on these investigations, a method of computing the shear stress of steel fiber reinforced concrete deep beam is suggested. The comparisons between computed values and experimentally observed values are shown to validate the proposed theoretical treatment.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new cementitous material, which has been developed to give significantly higher material performance than conventional concrete or engineered cementitious composites. In this study, reverse analysis of notched UHPC beam was conducted according to the experimental result of load-displacement. Conclusively, tensile strength vs. CMOD (Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) was calculated as an approximated method for the direct tensile strength estimation.

  • This paper proposes a versatile formula which can be used to evaluate the fire resistant time of steel beams under various design conditions. Towards this end, the key parameters which affect the fire performance of steel beams were first determined through thermo-mechanical considerations, and classified into two groups: structural parameters and thermal parameters. Then the degree of influence of each parameter on the fire performance was investigated through a fully coupled thermo-mechanical analysis up to the occurrence of run-away deflection. The accuracy of the numerical model used was verified using an available full-scale fire test before conducting an extensive parametric analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to obtain the formula which can be used to predict the fire resistance time of steel beams under various design conditions. The statistical analysis showed that the proposed formula is very robust. The application of the formula in practical fire design under the current code was illustrated in detail. The economy and other advantages of the proposed formula were clearly shown.
