  • Nuclear medicine have often used to diagnose cancers. The main absorbed dose from radiation to a radiation worker resulted from open radioisotopes. Methods for reducing the radiation dose to a radiation worker from radioisotopes injected to patients were studied. The shield device of 0.2 mmPb was manufactured as a size of $300mm{\times}500mm{\times}150mm$. By using dosimeters of Nanodot, the absorbed doses for thyroid, chest and genital organ were measured with and without a shielding device and with syringe shield and shielding device together. The highest absorbed dose of 0.908 mGy reduction of 20.8% as 0.719 mGy was in the genital organ by using the syringe shield and a shielding device together. A effective dose for a radiation worker during 1 year was expected to 1.223 mSv at the chest, which was decrease as 0.994 mSv by shielding device and syringe shield together. When open radioisotope is injected to a patient for examination, the only use of a shielding device results in the reduction of radiation dose to radiation workers.

  • The present work is determine to the dose distribution reduced by the insertion of a shielded into a vaginal cylinder around a $\^$60/CO source in brachytherapy, and to the source calibration. It was investigated by measuring the relative dose around a 2.5cm diameter shielded vaginal cylinder in a polystyrene phantom by use of a ionization chamber. Measurements were made with the cylinder unshielded and 0.55cm thick 90$^{\circ}C$ lead shields inserted. Also, the dose distribution compared measurement value with calculation value according to the device manufacturer and the multiple-divided dose tables. A reduction in dose was observed on the unshielded side of the cylinder which increased with distance from the source and it does 4.4% within 1cm from the surface of the cylinder. On the shielded side of the cylinder, the dose at the surface is reduced to about 20.4% of its value without the shield. The effective attenuation factor entered for the 90$^{\circ}C$ lead shielded cylinder was average 0.2 in a $\^$60/CO moving source. In comparision with the dose calculation mathods, the multiple-divided dose tables are difference less than ${\pm}$4.1% with measured data in a $\^$60/Co source.

  • When abdomen and pelvic were scanned with 128 channel MDCT, the gonadal exposure dose was measured with and without gonadal shield and the obtained images were evaluated. As a result, during abdominal MDCT scan, the gonadal exposure dose was measured $16.5{\pm}0.5$ mGy when the gonad shield was not used, and it was $7.5{\pm}0.3$ mGy when the large gonad shield($650m^2$) was used, which showed the effect of reduction in the gonadal exposure dose by 54%. During pelvic MDCT scan, the gonadal exposure dose was $9.5{\pm}0.3$ mGy when the gonad shield was not used, and it was $2.8{\pm}0.2$ mGy when the large gonard shield($650m^2$) was used, which showed the effect of reduction in the gonadal exposure dose by 70%. The images were obtained when using the gonad shield and when not using it during MDCT scan, and as a result of analyzing them with 5-point Likert scale, in the abdominal image, it was 4.1 points irrespective of whether using the gonad shield or not. And also, in pelvic scan, it was 1.2 points when the gonad shield was used, and 4.1 points when it was not used. With the results above, it is considered that during the abdominal 128-MDCT scan, by using the gonad shield, the images should be obtained without being degraded and the exposure dose must be reduced.

  • As the importance of intervention has recently increased, interest in the health of medical staff performing the procedure is increasing. Existing radiation shielding devices have limited the operator's movement and have not been properly used due to the risk of infection, and adequate radiation shielding of the operator's gonads and furthermore, the entire area of the procedure room has not been achieved. An auxiliary shielding device was manufactured by attaching a Bismuth to the elbow support used in the procedure, and the radiation shielding effect was measured. As a result of the measurement, the average spatial dose rate decreased by about 64.8%, and the independent sample t-test analysis showed statistically significant below the significance probability (p<0.05). The use of an auxiliary shielding device is considered to be an effective shielding method that can shield the operator's gonads and reduce the radiation spatial dose rate of the entire area of the procedure room.

  • As the structures of the high performance electronic equipments and devices recently become more complex, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) have been very essential for commercial and military purposes. Thus, sensitive electrical devices and densely packed systems need to be protected from electromagnetic wave. In this research, glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and carbon fiber/epoxy composites as electrical shielding materials were fabricated and electrical properties of the composites were measured. The concerning frequency band is from 300 MHz to 1 GHz. The performances of composite shielding enclosures were predicted using electromagnetic wave 3-D simulation tool, CST Microwave Studio. The shielding enclosure made of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were fabricated and the shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured in the anechoic chamber.

  • In the case of nuclear medicine practitioners in medical institutions, a wide range of exposure dose to individual workers can be found, depending on the type of source, the amount of radioactivity, and the use of shielding devices in handling radioactive isotopes. In this regard, this study evaluated the organ dose on practitioners as well as the dose reduction effect of the L-block shielding device in handling the diagnostic radiation source through the simulation based on the Monte Carlo method. As a result, the distribution of organ dose was found to be higher as the position of the radiation source was closer to the handling position of a practitioner, and the effective dose distribution was different according to the ICRP tissue weight. Furthermore, the dose reduction effect according to the L-block thickness tended to decrease, which showed the exponential distribution, as the shielding thickness increased. The dose reduction effect according to each radiation source showed a low shielding effect in proportion to the emitted gamma ray energy level.

  • A monte carlo simulation about shielding material and thickness of the syringe shield for radiation shield was performed. As a result of analysis, high atomic number materials such as tungsten, lead and bismuth have the highest shielding effect. However, $^{18}F$, $^{67}Ga$ and $^{111}In$ show high energy distribution in the region with thin shielding thickness. As the thickness of shielding materials increased, the energy distribution decreased due to reduction of ${\gamma}$-ray. In the case of low atomic number materials, they, showed energy distribution from highest to lowest, were barium sulfate, steel, stainless, iron and copper. Aluminum, plastic, concrete and water showed diverse aspect. they showed relatively high energy distribution because of increased ${\gamma}$-ray that penetrate the shield.

  • Purpose: he use of PET scanners and the number of patient in Korea have been increased for recent several years dramatically. For this reason, technologists have more possibilities to be exposed to the radiation. The hospitals using PET scanners should make an effort to reduce the radiation exposure dose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiation exposure does when using radiation shielding devices. The evaluation was performed through questionnaire survey and experiment. Materials and Methods: First, the technologists who had experience working in PET center in 2008-2009 were surveyed with questionnaire and TLD Figures, personal opinion of utilization of radiation shielding devices are analyzed. Second, we measured the shielding rate of shielding devices which have been using in PET study procedures. We divided the procedures into four steps; distribution, moving, injection of $^{18}F$-FDG and patient setup. Results: First, the results of this survey, using of L-block+Syringe shield, L-block, Syringe shield, No shield during the injection, were each 58.5%, 20%, 9%, 12.3%. The TLD values according to utilization of radiation shield, using both L-block+Syringe Shield and L-block showed the lower TLD values, and Syringe shield only or No shield showed the higher TLD values. Second, the results of experiments according to PET study procedures measured the shielding rates as follows. The shielding rates during the distribution using L-block, L-block+Apron shield were measured 97.4%, 97.7%. The shielding rates during the $^{18}F$-FDG delivery to the injection room using mobile Syringe shield, Syringe holder, Syringe shield carrier were each 81.7%, 98.9%, 99.7%. The shielding rates during the injection using Syringe shield, L-block, L-block+Syringe shield were measured each 51.9%, 98.3%, 98.7%. The shielding rates of Apron were measured in each 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 cm distance. The measurement were each 16.9%, 14.2%, 16.6%, 17.1%, 18.1%, 18.6%. Conclusion: The most effective method for radiation shielding is to using L-block during the $^{18}F$-FDG distribution and Syringe shield carrier during in moving $^{18}F$-FDG. For the $^{18}F$-FDG injection, L-block+Syringe shield have to be used. The shielding effect of Apron has shown average 16.4%. According to the survey of questionnaire, the operators recognized well risk of the radiation exposure but, tended ignore in working. The radiation dose according to recognition of radiation exposure risk was not relevant. but radiation dose according to utilization of radiation shield lower the more use it. The main reason of no use of shielding devices is cumbersome, 55% of the respondents answered. I'm sure, by use of radiation shield in all PET procedure, radiation exposure will be reduced considerably.
