  • This study investigates the effects of instrument-assisted soft mobilization (IASTM) and manual myofascial release (MFR) on the muscle activity of the biceps brachii. This study was conducted on 10 men and women in their 20s, and all subjects participated in the experiment for 3 days and measured muscle activity of the upper forearm muscles. On the first day, the muscle activity value was measured before the intervention, and the remaining two days were measured for muscle activity after the intervention of each manual therapy in a random order. All muscle activity values were compared and analyzed through the dependent t test and the independent t test. The before and after comparison of muscle activity values before and after each intervention was verified by performing the dependent t test and comparing the values of muscle activity between groups between each intervention after intervention by performing an independent t test. According to the results of this study, both interventions significantly increased muscle activity of the biceps brachii before and after intervention, and there was no significant difference in muscle activity values between groups after intervention. Therefore, both manual therapy (IASTM, MFR) are thought to be effective in improving neuromuscular control ability.

  • This study was conducted to confirm the effect of vibration on muscle activity in IASTM. The subjects were 20 healthy adults. The intervention applied in this study was IASTM applied to the biceps brachii muscle. In the case of the experimental group, unlike the control group, the vibration function was turned on when IASTM was applied. The interventions for each group were applied, and the muscle activity of the biceps brachii muscle was measured before and after the intervention. All measured values were calculated as %MVIC values, dependent t test and independent t test were performed and analyzed for comparisons. As a result of this study, only in the control group, the muscle activity of the biceps brachii muscle after the intervention was significantly decreased compared to before the intervention. When vibration is applied together with IASTM, the relaxation effect is reduced, which is considered to be inappropriate for treatment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of aromatherapy on stress using meta-analysis. Methods: Meta-analysis was done with 21 published studies, and data were analyzed with the SAS 9.1 program. Results: Fifty eight effect size was estimated with data from 21 published studies. Overall mean effect size (ES), and mean effect size of dependence variables according to the type of intervention and subject and according to the total amount of time spent in aromatherapy were estimated. Overall mean effect size of the effects of aromatherapy was .593, and the subjective stress (.983) was most effective in the physiological faculty, followed by mean effect size of cortisol (.648) and pulse (.40). On the other hand, mean effect size of systolic blood pressure (.490) was moderate, and that of diastolic blood pressure (.401) was not large. Mean effect size of elderly (.706) cancer patients was considerable(.337). There were significant differences depending on the subjects. With regards to the types of aromatherapy, the effect size of aroma massage combined with inhalation therapy was .590, and there were no significant differences between the intervention methods. With regards to the time of intervention, $20{\sim}30$ minutes spent in aromatherapy was .730, and there were no significant differences between the times of intervention. The relationship between the effect size and intervention frequency was r=.349 and showed significant difference. Conclusion: This result suggests that aromatherapy is an effective intervention to reduce stress for subjects. Nursing intervention protocol by using aromatherapy should be developed and applied in clinical and community settings. Further studies on the effects of aromatherapy on stress should be done by using meta-analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of non-pharmacological interventions for Korean adults with insomnia. Literature review was performed for articles published between 2000 and 2016 in electronic databases. Sixteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed by R version 3.3.1 for windows. Meta-analysis was performed using the random effects model; the overall effect size of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep was significantly large (Hedges' g=2.36, 95% CI: 1.44~3.28). For heterogeneity, a moderator analysis was performed using the study design, participants, age group, intervention, presence of hospitalization, and sleep measurement. There was a statistically significant difference between the effects of moderator variables, except for the study design and participants. Of the interventions, auricular acupressure reported to have the largest effect size on sleep. The findings in this study indicate that non-pharmacological interventions have a positive effect on sleep, providing objective evidence to improve sleep in adults with insomnia using effective interventions.

  • The purpose of this study was to systematically examine the effects of music interventions on the psychological and emotional well-being of adolescents with Internet addiction. Electronic databases were searched for combinations of terms related to adolescents, Internet addiction and related disorders, music intervention, and psychological and emotional outcomes. A total of nine studies that were published between 1995 and 2018 were identified and included in the final analysis. Among the included studies, six studies targeted middle school students and included both males and females. For outcome variables, anxiety and self-control were most frequently targeted. The most frequently used genre of music was popular Korean songs. In terms of intervention effects, the studies that used songwriting as a therapeutic technique showed positive results. Only four studies reported a rationale for their interventions and linked interventions to the target goals. This study discusses how music therapy interventions for adolescents with Internet addiction should be designed to effectively address the psychological and emotional issues of this young population.

  • The present study aims to verify the usefulness of microcurrent stimulation as an effective intervention for managing body shape. Thirty female college students with a percentage body fat of 30% or more participated as subjects and belonged to the one of three groups; control group, combined exercise group, microcurrent stimulation group. Based on the results of analyzing the measurement data from pre- and post-intervention for four weeks for each group, the following conclusions were obtained. There was no statistically significant difference in all measured variables in the control group. However, waist circumference and TC were significantly reduced in the combined exercise group, and also weight, percentage body fat, waist circumference, and apolipoprotein were significantly reduced in microcurrent stimulation group. Considering the above conclusions, it can be suggested that microcurrent stimulation could be an effective intervention to improve body composition and blood lipid profile to have a healthy body.
