The present study evaluates the validity of different equations specified in code provisions and proposed by the existing researchers to predict the concrete tensile capacities (direct tensile strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture) using a comprehensible database including 361 lightweight concrete (LWC), 1,335 normal-weight concrete (NWC) and 221 heavy-weight concrete (HWC) specimens. Most of the equations express the concrete tensile strengths as a function of its compressive strength based on the limited NWC concrete test data. However, the present database shows that the concrete tensile capacities are significantly affected by its unit weight as well. As a result, the inconsistency between experiments and predictions by the different models increases when the concrete unit weight is below 2,100 kg/$m^3$ and concrete compressive strength is above 50 MPa. On the other hand, new models proposed by the present study considering the concrete unit weight predict the tensile strengths of concrete with more accuracy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of phosphate on the adhesion of Escherichia coli to porous media. Column experiments were performed to examine the effect of phosphate on bacterial adhesion to quartz sand and iron-coated sand. Results showed that bacterial mass recovery in quartz sand decreased from 74.5 to 35.4% as phosphate concentration increased from 0 to 16 mg/L. This indicated that bacterial adhesion to quartz sand was enhanced with increasing phosphate concentration. This phenomenon is due to the increase of ionic strength. In contrast, the mass recovery in the coated sand increased from 2.9 to 26.0% as phosphate concentration increased. This indicated that bacterial adhesion to the coated sand was reduced with increasing phosphate concentration, due to the preoccupation of favorable adsorption sites and competitive adsorption by phosphate.

We have performed microencapsulation of phenyl acetate using poly (urea-formaldehyde) as a shell material, and studied the effect of agitation rate,. core/shell mass ratio, surfactant concentration, and reaction time on capsule characteristics such as size, shell thickness, and surface morphology. The formation of microcapsules was confirmed by FTIR and TGA, and capsule characteristics were studied by optical microscopy and FE-SEM. Capsule size and shell thickness reduced with increasing agitation rate. As the mass of shell material was increased, shell thickness and nanoparticles on capsule surface increased. Capsule size and shell thickness decreased with increasing the concentration of a surfactant. Increasing reaction time caused increased capsule yield and shell thickness.
Electric arc furnace slag is made in ironworks during steel refining, it is been increasing chemical and physical resistibility using ageing method of unstable state of melting steel slag for using concrete's fine aggregates. Which is been changing stable molecular structure of aggregates, it restrains moving of ion and molecule. In Korea, KS F 4571 has been prepared for using the electric arc furnace slag to concrete aggregates. In this study, Electric arc furnace slag is used in the PMC(Polymer Modified Concrete) which is applied a bridge pavement of rehabilitation, largely. In that case, this study evaluates the structural safety about increasing the specific weight. The 4-type bridges(RC slab bridge, RC rigid-frame bridge, PSC Beam bridge, Steel box girder bridge) pavement's increasing the total dead load is in 1 ~ 2%. Design moments in a load combination are increased less then 2%. safety factor is decreased less than 3%. Therefore, the structural safety has no problem for applying the electric arc furnace slag within PMC in bridge.

This study investigated the influence of oxyanions (nitrate, carbonate, phosphate) on the attachment of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) to Al-Fe bimetallic oxide-coated sand using column experiments. Results showed that bacterial attachment to the coated sand was independent of nitrate concentration. Bacterial mass recovery remained constant (10.9${\pm}$0.2%) with varying nitrate concentrations (0.1, 1, 10 mM). In case of carbonate, mass recovery increased from 25.6% to 39.0% with increasing carbonate concentration from 0.1 mM to 1 mM, and mass recovery also increased from 50.9% to 78.9% at the same concentration condition in case of phosphate. This phenomenon could be attributed to the hindrance effect of carbonate and phosphate to bacterial attachment to the coated sand. Meanwhile, with increasing carbonate/phosphate concentration from 1 mM to 10 mM, mass recovery decreased from 39.0% to 23.8% and from 78.9% to 52.6%, respectively. This phenomenon could be ascribed to the enhancement effect of free carbonate/phosphate ions present in solution phase due to increasing carbonate/phosphate concentration, which increase ionic strength and thus enhance bacterial attachment to the coated sand. In our experimental conditions, the effect of phosphate to bacterial attachment to the coated sand was the greatest among phosphate, carbonate, and nitrate.

Microbial and related biochemical mass of composts are important for optimization of its process and end-products. This study was carried out to assess the specific microbial and related biochemical mass which could be used as an indicator for compost maturity during composting stages. The samples from five compost plants were collected at three stages (Initial, Thermophilic and Mature) and analyzed for total aerobic bacteria (TAB), Coliforms, Escherichia coli, Actinomycetes and fungi. Significantly, the coliforms and E.coli counts decreased during the thermophilic stage and were completely eliminated during mature stage. However, the other microbial mass were completely eliminated during mature stage. Which disclosed that Coliforms and E.coli communities can be used as compost maturity indicator. Interestingly, the microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen ratio (MBC/MBN) were decreased a little during the thermophilic stage due to the decreasing number of coliforms, Ecoli and fungi, while the ratio increased during the mature stage due to increasing fungal and aerobic bacterial counts. In addition the heavy metals were shown strong negative correlation with Actenomycetes. This study provides insight to the evaluation of compost maturity as well as the quality by the metal-microbial interactions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of ionic strength and iron impregnation on the attachment of Enterococcus faecalis to granular activated carbon (GAC). Column experiments were performed to examine bacterial adhesion to coconutbased GAC (c-GAC), iron-impregnated c-GAC (fc-GAC), acid-washed c-GAC (a-GAC) and iron-impregnated a-GAC (fa-GAC) under two different solution (NaCl 1, 10 mM) conditions. Results showed that bacterial mass recovery in c-GAC decreased from 77.3 to 61.6% while in a-GAC it decreased from 71.6 to 32.3% with increasing ionic strength from 1 to 10 mM. This indicates that bacterial attachment to GAC can be enhanced with increasing ionic strength. Results also showed that the mass recoveries in fc-GAC were 62.6% (1 mM) and 53.3% (10 mM) while they were 50.8% (1 mM) and 16.9%(10 mM) in fa-GAC, which were lower than those in c-GAC and a-GAC. This demonstrates that bacterial adhesion to GAC can be enhanced through iron impregnation. This study provides information regarding the effects of ionic strength and iron impregnation on bacterial attachment to GAC. Furthermore, this study will advance our knowledge of bacterial removal in surface-modified granular media.
With the growth of the battery industry, a rapid increase in the production and usage of lithium-ion batteries is expected, and in line with this, much interest and effort is being paid to recycle waste batteries, including production scrap. Although much effort has been made to recycle cathode material, much attention has begun to recycle anode material to secure the supply chain of critical minerals and improve recycling rates. The proximate analysis that measures the content of coal can be used to analyze graphite in anode material, but it cannot accurately analyze due to the interaction between the components of the black mass. Therefore, in this study, thermogravimetric analysis of each component of black mass was measured as the temperature increased up to 950℃ in an oxygen atmosphere. As a result, in the case of cathode material, no change in mass was measured other than a mass reduction of about 5% due to oxidation of the binder and conductive material. In the case of anode material, except for a mass reduction of about 2% due to the binder, all mass reduction were due to the graphite(fixed carbon). In addition, metal conductors (Al, Cu) were oxidized and their mass increased as the temperature increased. Thermal analysis results of mixed samples of cathode/anode show similar results to the predictive values that can be calculated through each cathode and anode analysis results.
The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' conception of conservation of mass through the scenario of carbon emission in terms of carbon cycle. Seventy six high school students of 11th grade were participated in this study. Participants were provided with two scenarios that showed a gradual increase and decrease of atmospheric $CO_2$ amount from the level recorded in 2013 up to 450 ppm and to 340 ppm by 2110, which is the changes of around 15%. We asked participants to explain the reason after having them draw the emissions trajectory of $CO_2$ according to scenario. Most participants thought that carbon emission would continue to increase despite the two scenarios of carbon emission making sense in terms of conservation of mass between emissions and the natural removal of carbon dioxide. This implies that participants came to think of pattern matching that carbon emission would continue to increase as they used correlation graphs of carbon emission: that is, the graphs of the evolution of anthropogenic emissions, of atmospheric $CO_2$, and of global mean temperature, from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution up to date, all of which are shown in high school earth science textbooks.

Six different size of torch-ignition device were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The torch-ignition device was designed six different volumes and same orifice size. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass burn fraction and combustion enhancement rate. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burn fraction were increased when using the torch ignition device. And the combustion duration were decreased. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition device the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage. And the initial flame propagation was effected torch-ignition volume.
