  • From 1988 to 1991, nineteen patients with unresectable localized pancreatic carcinoma were treated with radiotherapy and/or hyperthermia or in combination with chemotherapy. Radiation dose of 4500-5000 cGy with or without additional 500-1000 cGy was administered over 5 to 6 weeks to the pancreatic tumor area using 10 MV linear accelerator. Five of 19 patients were given chemotherapy, either neoadjuvant or maintenance setting with FAM regimen (5-FU, adriamycin and mitomycin C), which was repeated every 4 weeks for one year or until progression. Symptomatic palliation was achieved in 17 among 19 patients ($89{\%}$) and objective response (complete or partial response in CT finding) was achieved in 5 among 11 patients ($45{\%}$). The median survival time was 9 months and one-year survival rate, $32{\%}$. Local-regional failure was documented in 10 among 13 patients ($77{\%}$) and distant failures were found in the liver (3 patients) and carcinomatosis (2 patients). Prognostic significance of various factors such as age, sex, performance status, tumor location, stage, etc. were assessed. Any factors did not have the prognostic significance in univariate analysis. Treatment was well tolerated in most of the patients with only mild to moderate toxicity.

  • In understanding radiosensitivity a new concept of inherent radiosensitivity based on individuality and heterogeneity within a population has recently been explored. There has been some discussion of possible mechanism underlying differences in radiosensitivity between cells. Ataxia telangiectasia (AT), a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, is characterized by hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation and other DNA damaging agents at the cellular level. There have been a lot of efforts to describe the cause of this hypersensitivity to radiation. At the cellular level, chromosome repair kinetics study would be an appropriate approach. The purpose of this study was to better understand radiosensitivity En an approach to investigate kinetics of induction and repair of $G_2$ chromatic bleaks using normal, AT heterozygous (ATH), and AT homozygous lymphoblastoid cell lines. In an attempt to estimate initial damage, $9-{\beta}-D-arabinosyl-2-fluoroadenine,$ an inhibitor of DNA synthesis and repair, was used in this study. It was found from this study that radiation induces higher chromatid breaks in AT than in normal and ATH cells. There was no significant differences of initial chromatid breaks between normal and ATH cells. Repair kinetics was the same for all. So the higher level of breaks in AT $G_2$ cells is thought to be a reflection of the increased initial damage. The amount of initial damage correlated well with survival fraction at 2 Gy of cell survival curve following radiation. Therefore, the difference of radiosensitivity in terms of $G_2$ chromosomal sensitivity is thought to result from the difference of initial damage.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze any hinderance factors for successful attending system of Korean National Assembly and to provide improvement plans of legal systems to ensure security of National Assembly. First, the conceptualization and functions of Korean National Assembly attending system were discussed and related regulations and laws were also examined. Second, hinderance factors, such as sharp increase in 1) illegal behaviors, 2) bring in prohibited items, and 3) possibility of National Assembly terror, for successful attending systems were analysed. Third, improvements of legal system for security enhancement of National Assembly Attending System were discussed: 1) new legislation for providing National Assembly's security officers with special judicial police power is needed to deal with criminal behaviors and to protect human rights, and 2) legal reforms are required to provide right to command to National Assembly's Security Planning Office rather than National Assembly security office under Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in order to unify commanding system.

  • Oral history research in Korea began with the effort to find out the truth behind the hidden historical issues that occurred during the mid-1980s. Since then, attempts to record the major issues through contemporary Korean history orally has increased. From the late 2000s, the focus shifted to local and smaller village units. In Busan, from 2009 to 2016, 33 oral history projects from 10 government agencies were conducted. This research was carried out to investigate what kind of oral records has been produced in Busan from the said period and how they are managed. With these findings, possible solutions to preserve and utilize the oral records as the locality archives are suggested.

  • Deleuze and Guattari revive the educational meaning of training. For them, "a violent training" always penetrates unconsciousness and consciousness. For example, we can float on water only by swimming. There is a complex historical exploration on the subject of training. Socrates distinguishes the training of spirit from that of the body, so he secures the independence of educational language. This heritage continues to us until today. However, Foucault argues that, since the modern era, humans have accepted an active obedience by "disciplinary training". Nowadays, the term "skill discipline" is also reduced to business language, and we should overcome this situation. Deleuze and Guattari suggest a "becoming-other" argument predicated on "pre-conscious singularities" on this point. The training of spirit evolves in relation to a body and other circumstance for them. Therefore, the traditional hierarchy between spirit and body is erased in their argument. Ironically, this argument displays "educational effectiveness" to success Socrates's heritage subverting to the modern thinking of it. In conclusion, we can now rethink the educational value of training based on this effectiveness. Kyudo training is an excellent example of education through body and spirit.

  • Purpose: This study evaluates the feasibility of Korean Advance Directives (K-AD) developed earlier. Method: From January 1 to February 28, 2013, data were collected from 330 adults through a self-reported questionnaire established by the authors based on literature review and expert consultation. The feasibility of K-AD was multi-dimensionally evaluated through four criteria: cognitive, psychological, document making and socially expecting aspects. Data were analyzed using t tests, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe post hoc tests via the SAS 9.1.3 program. Results: The feasibility of K-AD differed significantly by gender (p=.003), educational level (p<.001), religion (p=.002), and self-reported health status (p=.039). Differences in the level of easiness with K-AD by gender (p=.008) and education (p=.047) were significant. Perceived simplicity of AD differed significantly by religion (p=.005), and the necessity of AD differed significantly by gender (p=.025) and religion (p=.005). Conclusion: K-AD are sufficiently feasible to be tentatively utilized in practice. This is the first study to explore the feasibility of K-AD on the basis of multiple aspects. However, further studies involving diverse populations and methodologies to validate the usefulness of K-AD are warranted.

  • Narrators used to take an important role in the theatre of ancient Greece. They gave the audience an important information, explained the situations and conflicts between characters by talking to the audience directly. But in the realism play in the 20th century, which is represented as the 'fourth wall,' anything that can interrupt commitments of the audience such as a narrator, was excluded. However the two representative playwright in the 20th century, Thorton Wilder and Arthur Miller took narrators in their plays, Our Town and A View form the Bridge. This study shows why they adopted narrators in their play, which was unusual at that time and how this form of narrator affects to the meaning of the plays.
