  • A nonlinear dynamic modeling method for cantilever beams undergoing axially oscillating motion is presented in this paper. Hybrid deformation variables are employed for the modeling method with which frequency response characteristics of a axially oscillating cantilever beams are investigated. It is shown that the geometric nonlinear effects of stretching and curvature play important roles to accurately predict the frequency response characteristics. The effects of the amplitude and the damping constant on the frequency characteristics are also exhibited.

  • Experimental study is conducted for investigating the characteristics of friction-induced noise with respect to the variation of system geometry. In this study, a vertically fixed rod is in contact with the reciprocating plate which is controlled by the step motor. Friction noise is generated during the reciprocating motion due to the frictional contact between the plastic pin and the aluminum plate. The frequencies of the friction noise are changed when the height of the rod varies. However, it is found that the vibration modes involved in the friction noise are not changed. It implies that the unstable modes remain unstable regardless of the change of the system geometry, and thus, there are the certain mode shapes which are likely to produce friction noise.

  • An analysis method is suggested and experimentally studied in order to solve a vibration problem of a flexible structure while it is moving. In this method, substructure synthesis method, modal analysis method and Newmark's integral method were used. Total deformation of a structure was composed of quasistatic component and dynamic component. Rigid body modes were considered in calculation of dynamic component. Combining those two component, deformation behavior and a real structural model of a transfer feeder showed good agreements with computational results.

  • In this paper, we analyse and present mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure rates of turn about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. • A four degrees of freedom (dof) motion platform for bicycle simulator is developed. The motion platform, capable of the vertical linear and three angular motions, is designed based on analysis of the typical motion characteristics revealed by the existing six dof bicycle simulator. The platform essentially consists of two parts: the three dof parallel manipulator, consisting of a moving platform, a fixed base and three actuators, and the turntable to generate the yaw motion. The nonlinear kinematics and dynamics of the three dof parallel manipulator with multiple closed loop chains are analyzed for tracking control of the motion platform. The tracking performances of the three control schemes are experimentally compared: the computed torque method (CTM), the sliding mode control (SMC) and the PD control. The CTM and SMC, incorporated with the system dynamics model, are found to be equally better in performance than the PD controller, irrespective of the presence of external disturbance.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the precision motion control based on the dynamic characteristics of piezoelectric actuators in the inchworm. The dynamic characteristics are identified by the frequency domain modeling technique using the experimental data. For the motion control, the hysteresis behavior is compensated by the inverse hysteresis model. The dynamic stiffness of an inchworm is generally low compared to its driving condition, so mechanical vibration may degenerate the motion accuracy of the inchworm. The Sliding mode controller and the Kalman filter are designed for motion control of the inch-worm.

  • The response characteristics of one to one resonance on the quadrangle cantilever beam in which basic harmonic excitations are applied by nonlinear coupled differential-integral equations are studied. This equations have 3-dimensional non-linearity of nonlinear inertia and nonlinear curvature. Galerkin and multi scale methods are used for theoretical approach to one-to-one internal resonance. Nonlinear response characteristics of 1st, 2nd, 3rd modes are measured from the experiment for basic harmonic excitation. From the experimental result, geometrical terms of non-linearity display light spring effect and these terms play an important role in the response characteristics of low frequency modes. Nonlinear nitration in the out of plane are also studied.

  • When the motion of vibrating structure is restrained due to the adjacent objects, the frequencies and the mode shapes of the structure change and its vibration characteristics becomes unpredictable, in general. Although the importance of the study on this type of vibration model increases in many engineering areas, most studies conducted so far are limited to the theoretical study on dynamic responses of the structure with the separation plate, including some experimental works. In the paper, both numerical analyses and experiments are conducted to study the chaotic vibration characteristics and the dynamic response of a fixed-free beam which has restrained motion at the free end by the separation plates. Results are presented for various magnetic forces and gaps between stops.

  • A new and efficient method is presented to evaluate contact force and motion of an electric railway simple catenary-pantograph system. Overhead lines are regarded as simple strings, and hangers connected to the strings are replaced with concentrated forces acting on them. The displacement of strings due to concentrated forces caused by hangers and pantograph is expressed using Green's function. A system of linear algebraic equations in terms of unknown forces is derived based upon the compatibility requirement at the location of hangers and pantograph. This procedure is more analytic in formulation compared to the existing methods such as finite difference method or normal modes method, and it is expected to be more accurate. Present method has additional advantage that it requires neither numerical differentiation nor system eigenvalues.
