  • Recently, problems related to vibrations of decomposed granite soils have acquired increasing attention in Korea because those soils cover approximately one third of the country. Both resonant column and cyclic triaxial test were performed to investigate deformation characteristics of unsaturated and cement-mixed decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. The important soil parameters in this respect are the shear moduli, dynamic moduli of elasticity and damping ratios. The dynamic parameters are influenced by variables such as strain amplitude, ratio of loading cycles, and degree of saturations, etc. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation to the maximum shear modulus due to a capillary menisci effect was about 17~18 % at low strain amplitude and 10~15 % at intermediate strain amplitude. This paper suggests the range of threshold strain and mean shear modulus of decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. It also proposed the empirical relationship between the dynamic parameters for cement-mixed and non-mixed decomposed granite soils.

  • To overcome the limitations of current evaluation procedures for floor vibration under crowd loading, two kinds of uncertainties associated with individual time lag differences and the complex behavior of crowd should be taken into account. The complex behavior of crowds has yet to be fully described, even though individual differences can be dealt with statistically. This paper proposes time lag considered (TLC) crowd model based on a probabilistic approach. The load reduction factor, which reflects the effect of a general degree of synchronization among crowd, is proposed. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to determine various crowd behaviors by using the TLC crowd model proposed. The TLC crowd model can rationally treat the energy loss of various crowd patterns. This indicates that it may be used as a theoretical basis in refining dynamic load factor of crowd loading.

  • In this study, a form-finding method of tensegrity systems by using the force density method combined with the stiffness matrix method was presented. Numerous studies have been made on form-finding methods of the tensegrity systems. However, these methods are limited in the tensegrity systems with multiple null space of the equilibrium matrix. The proposed method can uniquely define a single integral feasible set of force densities for the structures. In order to draw maximum natural frequency that can lead a maximum stiffness of the tensegrity systems, a constrained maximization problem is formulated in the genetic algorithm. Several numerical examples are presented to prove dfficiency in searching for self-equilibrium congifurations of tensegrity systems with multiple self-stress states. A good performance of the proposed method has been shown in the results.

  • In this study linear and nonlinear dynamic stability characteristics of a medium-size high-speed turbocharger, whose rotor is supported by two 3-lobe journal bearings, are analyzed to evaluate and identify the effects of its bearing design variables. The rotor has the rated speed of 40,500 rpm and maximum continuous speed of 45,000 rpm. At first, utilizing the linear stability analysis method, bearing designs of yielding stable or unstable LogDecs as small as possible are searched by manipulating with machined bearing clearances and preloads. As next, utilizing the nonlinear analysis method, limit cycles of the rotor responses at the rated and maximum continuous speeds are simulated to check their acceptances. Results have shown that for the turbocharger rotor-bearing system considered, the 3-lobe journal bearing design with a smaller machined clearance and a larger preload are preferred for the stable rotor responses. More importantly, since there exists a good correlation between the linear and nonlinear stability analysis results, it is concluded that firstly the linear stability analysis method may be applied to screen quickly the ranges of bearing designs for stable or least unstable solutions and then, lastly the nonlinear stability analysis method may be deployed to check an absolute motion stability in terms of the limit cycle.

  • Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.

  • The toxicity of bivalves in the Korean waters was investigated during 1987-1988. The toxicity of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) was found in the sea mussels (Mytilus edulis galloprovincialis, M. corsucus), scallops (Patinopecten yessoensis, Chlamys farreri), tellin (Peronidia venulosa) and venus clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) among the 28 species screened. The toxicity in mussels, scallop (C. farreri) and venus clam was mainly confirmed from the samples collected around Jindong Bay in the southern coast of the peninsula, whereas the toxicities of tellin and scallop (P. yessoensis) were found in the vicinity of Pohang in the east coast. Samples from the west coast showed low levels of toxicity than those from the east arid south coasts. Although it varied with the regions, the toxicity was detected mainly during April to June, exceptionally during May to August in Pohang. The levels of toxicity were generally below the criteria of 4 mouse unit (MU)/g edible portion in foreign countries, with few exceptions.

  • A method for increasing the difference of side-lobe level in spherical microphone array is presented. In array signal processing, it is known that narrow interval between sensors can increase the difference between main lobe and side-lobe of array response which eventually increase the source recognition capability. Recent commercial array being used, however, have shown certain limitation in using the number of sensors due to its costs and geometrical size of array. To overcome this problem, we have adapted MEMS sensors into spherical microphone array. To check out the improvement, two different types of spherical microphone array were designed. One array is composed with 32 regular instrument microphones and the other one is 85 MEMS sensors. Simulation and experiments were conducted on a sinusoidal noise source with two arrays. The time history data were analyzed with spherical harmonic decomposition and beamforming technique. 85 MEMS sensors array showed the improved side-lobe level suppression by more than 4 dB above the frequency content of 2 kHz compared to 32-sensor array.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of interior noise and low frequency noise characteristic for the Busan citizens to use public transport, Busan Metro Line 3. The interior noise evaluation index, articulation index(AI) is evaluated the lower value about average 22 % in a whole range, this is difficult to have a conversation. Also, noise criteria(NC) curve is partially evaluated as NC-65 below 2000 Hz, space type is evaluated as factories. Another of interior noise evaluation index, preferred speech interference level(PSIL) is evaluated the upper value about average 66 dB(A) in a whole range, this is evaluated to be interrupted. In the case of low frequency noise(20~200 Hz), the measurement of low frequency noise is assessed largely beyond noise criteria of ISO 226. The low frequency noise should be reduced because low frequency noise affects on psychological stress and displeasure although low frequency noise is not recognized by auditory sense. The low frequency noise criteria and guideline will be enacted from now on in Korea.

  • A damage detection and assessment algorithm is developed by measuring accelerations at limited locations of a structure under forced vibrations. The developed algorithm applies a time-domain system identification (SI) method that identifies a structure by solving a linearly constrained nonlinear optimization problem for optimal structural parameters. An equation error of the dynamic equilibrium of motion is minimized to estimate optimal parameters. An adaptive parameter grouping scheme is applied to localize damaged members with sparse measured accelerations. Damage is assessed in a statistical manner by applying a time-windowing technique to the measured time history of acceleration. Displacements and velocities at the measured degrees of freedom (DOF) are computed by integrating the measured accelerations. The displacements at the unmeasured DOF are estimated as additional unknowns to the unknown structural parameters, and the corresponding velocities and accelerations we computed by a numerical differentiation. A numerical simulation study with a truss structure is carried out to examine the efficiency of the algorithm. A data perturbation scheme is applied to determine the thresholds lot damage indices and to compute the damage possibility of each member.

  • A prognostic indicator of coronary heart disease, C-reactive protein, was tried to be determined by a batch-type quartz crystal microbalance immunosensor. The sensor was operated by direct-binding mode and the optimum concentration for the corresponding antibody for immobilization was $50{\mu}g/ml$. The reaction buffer for the system was 0.1 M sodium phosphate (pH 7.0) and system operation was performed in the order of baseline stabilization, analyte addition and measurement, and regeneration of the sensor chip with 10 mM NaOH. When plotted in double-logarithmic scale, the sensor showed a linear detection range of 0.27-106.00 nM for rat C-reactive protein with the limit of detection of 0.53 nM. It also showed a good reusability.
