  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the damping properties of polyurethane composites incorporating waste tire rubber powder and preplaced coarse aggregates. Four types of polyurethane-based composites were manufactured, and longitudinal impact tests were performed. And vibration signals in the time domain and frequency domain were measured and values of damping ratio for each specimen were calculated. Test results showed that the damping ratios of polyurethane composites, in which the amount of polyurethane was reduced by 10.6% and 21.2% through incorporation of rubber particles, were 8.4% and 4.6% lower than that of pure polyurethane. The damping ratio of the polyurethane composite produced in a similar manner to the prepact concrete production method was found to be 22% lower than that of pure polyurethane, however, the amount of polyurethane was reduced by 50% and the stiffness was 25.7 times higher than that of pure polyurethane.

  • A base isolation system is widely used to reduce seismic responses of low-rise buildings. This system cannot be effectively applied to high-rise buildings because the initial stiffness of the high-rise building with the base isolation system maintains almost the same as the building without the base isolation system to set the yield shear force of the base isolation system larger than the design wind load. To solve this problem, the mid-story isolation system was proposed and applied to many buildings. The mid-story isolation system has two major objectives; first to reduce peak story drift and second to reduce peak drift of the isolation story. Usually, these two objectives are in conflict. In this study, a hybrid mid-story isolation system for a tall building is proposed. A MR (magnetorheological) damper was used to develop the hybrid mid-story isolation system. An existing building with mid-story isolation system, that is "Shiodome Sumitomo Building" a high rise building having a large atrium in the lower levels, was used for control performance evaluation of the hybrid mid-story isolation system. Fuzzy logic controller and genetic algorithm were used to develop the control algorithm for the hybrid mid-story isolation system. It can be seen from analytical results that the hybrid mid-story isolation system can provide better control performance than the ordinary mid-story isolation system and the design process developed in this study is useful for preliminary design of the hybrid mid-story isolation system for a tall building.

  • This study developed an analytical model for predicting nonlinear behavior of PT flat plate frames having slab-column connections with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. The developed model can predict the failure sequence until punching failure occurs. For verifying the analytical model, the test results of PT flat plate slab-column connections were compared with the results of the analysis. Moreover, the results of static pushover test and shaking table test of 2 story PT flat plate frame were compared with analysis results. For evaluating seismic performance of PT flat plate frame, this study conducted nonlinear response history analysis of the 2 story PT flat plate frame with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column under 1940 El Centro ground motion scaled to have pseudo spectral acceleration of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7g at the fundamental period of the frame. This study observed that as ground motion is more intense, seismic demands for the frame having the connections without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column are larger than those without slab bottom reinforcement.

  • A ground hot-firing test (HFT) was carried out to make a close examination into the pressure instability for the 70 N-class hydrazine thruster under development. Monopropellant grade hydrazine was adopted as a propellant for the HFT, and catalyst-bed was filled with $Ir/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. In order to investigate the effects of thrust-chamber diameter on combustion stability, evaluation tests for the development models were performed on three kinds of lower thrust chambers having the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of 1.03, 1.13, and 1.26. As results, it was found that low frequency instability (~ 50 Hz) was inherent in the models, and in addition, increase of the L/D and decrease of the operating pressure led to an amplification of pressure oscillation in the test condition specified.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the vibration reduction capacities of a floating track system using a resilient rubber mat, and to compare the results with the track support stiffness and track impact factor of a conventional slab track system by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along a service line. The theoretically designed track support stiffness and track impact factor were compared with the measured track support stiffness and track impact factor for each tested track. The calculated and measured track support stiffness of the floating track system were found to be similar, and the floating track system satisfied the design specifications of the track impact factor. The overall vibration level and track support stiffness of the floating track system were thereupon found to be significantly lower than those of the conventional slab track system. The experimental results thus showed that the vibration reduction effect of the floating track system is greater than that of the conventional slab track.

  • Transition tracks are an alternative for enhancing the long-term serviceability and durability of concrete track components in railway bridges. The goal of this paper is to investigate the structural behavior for transition track systems of railway bridge deck ends. In this study, the structural behavior of transition tracks such as the variations in static, dynamic, and fatigue behaviors and dynamic properties (natural frequency and damping ratio) are assessed and compared through performing loading tests and finite element analyses using actual vehicle impact loadings. As a result, it is found that the structural behavior of the transition track system is expected to satisfy the actual vehicle impact loading, and the variation in the neutral axis and dynamic characteristics are not affected by the fatigue loading. Therefore, it is inferred that the structural capacity and long-term durability of the transition track system is proven.

  • This study investigated the possibility of early determination of frost damage on the concrete surface by using the rebound hardness method, widely used for estimation the compressive strength of concrete on the site. For this purpose, the surface damage of concrete was compared by measuring the rebound hardness and the relative dynamic modulus of the concrete for the multi-sided and single sided concrete surface exposed to freeze and thaw condition. Compared to the resonance vibration method, the rebound hardness method was able to show the frost damage 150 cycles quicker for the single-sided exposed concrete specimen and 50 cycles quicker for the multi-sided exposed concrete specimen. Therefore, it is considered that the rebound hardness method can determine the concrete surface damage more quickly than that of the resonance vibration method.

  • 7-tonf turbopump real-propellant tests in Naro Space Center were conducted and high-frequency signals from an accelerometer and pressure sensors installed on the casing and the inlet/outlet pipeline of LOX pump were analyzed to estimate the structural and hydrodynamic stabilities. Waterfalls, frequency spectrums and RMS(Root Mean Square) values of the measured signals were calculated and characteristic instability frequencies by the rotating cavitation and the rear floating ring seal(F.R.S) were investigated. Static pressures of the inlet/outlet pipeline and an acceleration of the pump casing are strongly affected on pressure fluctuation induced by the rear floating ring seal in the leakage path. Despite the acceleration RMS value seems totally small, the rotating-speed-related synchronous frequency affecting the shaft instability is distinctly observed in the frequency contour.

  • Semi rigid pavement is a pavement type using advantages of both flexibility of asphalt pavement and rigidity of concrete pavement by infiltrating cement paste into voids of open graded asphalt mixtures. The semi rigid pavement has better smoothness and smaller driving vibration or noise comparing to the concrete pavement, and has smaller permanent deformation and has temperature falling effect comparing to the asphalt pavement. The temperature falling effect were investigated at a semi rigid overlay pavement test section, and the temperature falling and water retaining effects were verified by measuring the temperature and weight of specimens at a housetop. Horizontal and vertical stresses and strains were compared by structural analysis of the semi rigid pavement and asphalt pavement using the Abaquser o, a commercial 3D finite element analysis program. The results were verified by Bisar 3.0, a multi-layered elastic analysis program. Performance of the semi rigid pavement and asphalt pavement were compared by predicting fatigue cracking based on the structural analysis results.
