  • Heat-resistance of W/$Y_2O_3$ as throat insert material was evaluated to develop rocket motor keeping thrust uniformly under condition of high-temperature, high-pressure and long-burn time. Test was conducted with varying burn time, and test results were compared with CIT. Test showed that ablation rate was decreased according as burn time was increased, and that ablation rate of W/$Y_2O_3$ was about 55 % of CIT. Macro/micro structures of throat insert did not show a peculiar phenomenon by increased burn time. In addition, the vacuum heat treatment is effective for the prevention of crack in throat insert.

  • In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.

  • Five waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated from Suyeong-ri site in Hwaseong, South Korea. The aim of the present study was to identify the species and estimate the date of manufacture and the manufacturing method of these artefacts. The study also aimed to conserve the original shapes of waterlogged wood artefacts by using the vacuum freeze drying method. The two large waterlogged woods were identified as Ulmus spp. and Morus spp., whereas one of the three small waterlogged woods was identified as Abies spp. and the other two as hard pine. Radiocarbon dating using wiggle match dated the manufacturing of these wooden artefacts between BCE 8520-8490 or BCE 8470-8290 in the Neolithic age, and a similar period was also confirmed for seed excavated from a place close to the location where the waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated. The surface of waterlogged wood artefacts had several traces of manufacturing processes - traces of tearing and chopping - were observed. Based on these observations, it was confirmed that stone adz was used to make these wooden artefacts. Thereafter, the waterlogged wood samples were conserved by immersing them into PEG#4,000 of concentration in water from 10% to 40% at room temperature(15~25℃) and subjecting them to vacuum freeze drying. However, the internal moisture was not completely removed in some thick parts of waterlogged woods by applying the general schedule such as raising the shelf temperature as the surface temperature rises. Therefore, additional study is required using the schedule-method for vacuum freeze drying of large waterlogged wood.

  • In this study, a composite phase change material (CPCM) produced using the SOL-GEL technique was developed as a thermal energy storage medium for low-temperature applications. Tetradecane and activated carbon (AC) were used as the core and supporting materials, respectively. The tetradecane phase change material (PCM) was impregnated into the porous structure of AC using the vacuum impregnation method, and a thin layer of silica gel was coated on the prepared composite using the SOL-GEL process, where tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the silica source. The thermal performance of the CPCM was analysed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). DSC results showed that the pure tetradecane PCM had melting and freezing temperatures of 6.4℃ and 1.3℃ and corresponding enthalpies 226 J/g and 223.8 J/g, respectively. The CPCM exhibited enthalpy of 32.98 J/g and 27.7 J/g during the melting and freezing processes at 7.1℃ and 2.4℃, respectively. TGA test results revealed that the AC is thermally stable up to 500℃, which is much higher than the decomposition temperature of the pure tetradecane, which is around 120℃. Moreover, in the case of AC-PCM and CPCM thermal degradation started at 80℃ and 100℃, respectively. The chemical stability of the CPCM was studied using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and the results confirmed that the developed composite is chemically stable. Finally, the surface morphology of the AC and CPCM was analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which confirmed the presence of a thin layer of silica gel on the AC surface after the SOL-GEL process.

  • The fiber-reinforced endodontic posts were prepared using a photocurable resin and a glass fiber. The mechanical property of the posts increased with increasing density of glass fiber and the micro-pores in the post were removed by a vacuum impregnation process. To improve the interfacial adhesion between glass fiber and polymer, silane coupling agent was used. The surface treatment of glass fiber increased the surface wettability of resing on glass fiber and increased the adhesion property with resin, consequently improved the mechanical property of posts.

  • To overcome the disadvantages of conventional excavation technology various trenchless (or excavation free, or no-dig) repair-reinforcement technologies have been developed and tried. But trenchless technologies so far developed have some drawbacks such as high cost and inconvenience of operation. In this study, a repairing-reinforcing process for underground pipes with glass fiber fabric polymer composites using VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) has been developed. The developed process requires shorter operation time and lower cost with smaller and simpler operating equipments than those of the conventional trenchless technologies. For the reliable operation of the developed method, a simple method to apply pressure and vacuum to the reinforcement was devised and flexible mold technology was tried. Also, resin filling and cure status during RTM process were monitored with a commercial dielectrometry cure monitoring system, LACOMCURE. From the investigation, it has been found that the developed repairing-reinforcing technology with appropriate process variables and on-line cure monitoring has many advantages over conventional methods.

  • There have been a lot of works in order to develop an excellent adsorbent for separation of olefin and paraffin. In the present work, the adsorption characteristics of mesoporous MCM-41 containing silver ion for 1-butene and n-butane were studied. The adsorption ability for the 1-butene depending on thermal treatment were also investigated.MCM-41 exhibits much higher adsorption amounts for 1-butene as well as n-butane, compared to those of Ag/13X zeolite. In case of MCM-41 containing silver ion, the adsorption amount of 1-butene dramatically increased due to the ${\pi}$-complexation, whereas the adsorption amount of n-butane decrease. The Ag/MCM-41 after the thermal treatment at 373 K under evacuation exhibit the highest 1-butene/n-butane adsorption ratio, expecially at low pressure (100 Torr).

  • In the vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM) process that has become the center of attention for manufacturing massive composite structures, a good evacuation of air in the fiber preform is recognized as the prime factor. The microvoids, or the dry spots, are formed as a result of improper gate/vent locations and the mold geometry. The non-uniform resin velocity at the flow front leads to the formation of microvoids in the fibers, whereas the air in the microvoids can migrate along with the resin flow during mold filling. The residual air in the internal voids of a composite structure may cause a degradation of the mechanical properties as well as the structural failure. In this study, a unified macro- and micro analysis methods were developed to investigate the formation and transport of air in resin during VARTM process. A numerical simulation program was developed to analyze the three-dimensional flow pattern as well as the macro- and microscopic distribution of air in a composite part fabricated by VARTM process.

  • From the low swamp remains in Sinchang-dong, Gwangju, a number of wooden lacquerware along with various wooden artifacts were excavated. These excavated lacquerware have deteriorated and weak wooden parts and the lacquer layer come off from the wooden parts; they are very likely to peel off and crack. Therefore, we impregnated the lacquerware in PEG#4000 40% solution that was effective for vacuum freeze drying and finished freeze-drying below 0°…. We compared the weight of wood and lacquerware right after the freeze-drying with the weight after leaving them in a airtight space with 60% RH (relative humidity). The comparison results showed no change in weight; thereby we confirmed controlling the finishing temperature during freeze-drying could control the moisture in wood after drying and it could stabilize wood against the change in moisture in the atmosphere. according to the analysis of the lacquer fragment, the base layer was pasted on the wooden surface with mixed black pigment and the upper layer was pasted three or four times with the mixture of lacquer and black pigment; or it was pasted without the black base coating.

  • The increase of greenhouse gas emission and decrease of fossil fuel are being caused by the indiscreet consumption of energy by people. Recently, green policy has been globally implemented to reduce energy consumption. This paper studied the research to reduce the energy consumption in buildings, by using the heat storage properties of PCM. PCM has to prevent leakage from the liquid state. Therefore, we prepared form stable PCM, by using the vacuum impregnation method. Three kinds of organic PCMs were impregnated into the structure of porous material. The characteristics of the composites were determined by using SEM, DSC, FTIR and TGA. SEM morphology showed the micro structure of silica fume/PCM. Also, thermal properties were examined by DSC and TGA analyses; and the chemical bonding of the composite was determined by FTIR analysis.
