  • The research reported in this paper suggests an index of a 'good job' and validates it in several different ways. Not much is known yet, it is emphasized, about what the defining characteristics of a good job are and what the causes and major consequences are resulting from the attainment of such job. This is not merely because relatively little attention has been paid to construct a usable index, but also because a few studies, if any, were often plagued with several limitations, some theoretical and other analytical. As a consequence, fragmented speculations and research findings tended to flourish in the shortage of an overarching conceptualization and rigorous empirical assessment. In particular, a comprehensive index that encompasses a few critical job characteristics based on some solid theoretical underpinnings was in thirsty want. To relieve this want, the current study tries to formulate such index and validate it. A covariance structure analysis of representative national sample survey (Korean General Social Survey) data in South Korea indicates that wage, occupational prestige, authority and job security are the defining characteristics of a good job and that the index consisting of these characteristics is generally valid with respect to its constituent attributes, antecedents and a consequence, thereby supporting its discriminant-convergent and construct validities. The findings are interpreted with providing a few substantive implications stemming from them.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the health and nutritional status of Korean adults according to food security by age group. Methods: The subjects were 20~79 year old adults (n = 16,595) who participated in the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010~2012). Subjects were divided into three groups based on food security such as secure, mildly insecure, and moderately/severely insecure groups. Dietary intake was estimated by 24-hour dietary recall. As for mental health status, the data on mental stress, sleep hours, depression symptoms, and suicide ideation were used. Results: Korean adults who were exposed to high food insecurity typically had low income levels, lived alone, and were recipients of basic welfare. In the 20~39y group, people with higher food insecurity had lower concentrations of hemoglobin and higher iron-binding capacity. In the 40~59y group, people with higher food insecurity had lower HDL-cholesterol. In the 60~79y group, people with higher food insecurity had higher total cholesterol levels, more stress, more experiences of depression symptoms, and were more suicidal. Mean intakes of energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, carotene, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, and vitamin C were lower in the food insecure groups. Amounts of vegetables, fruits, and seasoning intakes tended to be lower in people with higher food insecurity. The effects of food security on nutrition intake were greater in the 40~59y and 60~79y groups than the 20-39y group. Conclusion: Food insecurity was related to certain health indicators such as anemia and cholesterol levels and affected mental health. The effects of food insecurity on health and nutritional status were different by age group.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influential factors of the marital satisfaction of Korean couples and international couples and the impact of related variables involving marital equity and marital conflicts on marital satisfaction in a bid to give some suggestions on how to keep on leading a happy married life. A survey was conducted from July to September, 2010, and the answer sheets from 79 Korean couples and 79 international couples who numbered 316 were analyzed except for the incomplete answer sheets. The women of the international couples got the best mean scores. When the men and women of the international couples were compared, the women scored significantly higher than the men, which showed that the former group found themselves to put more investment in their marital relationship. Concerning ways of coping with marital conflicts in the groups, conflict intervention by oneself was most prevalent among the men of the international couples and least among the women of the Korean couples. Regarding sex-role attitude and communication, there were no significant differences in sex-role attitude. As to marital satisfaction, the men of the Korean couples got the highest mean scores, and the women of the international couples scored lowest. When the correlation analysis was conducted, the variable that had the closest correlation to marital satisfaction overall was positive problem solving by the spouse(.469), followed by conflict intervention by the spouse(-.453), positive problem solving by oneself(.451), the academic credential of the spouse(.443) and one's own retreat from conflict(-.409). As a result of making the regression analysis to find out which variables affected marital satisfaction, the most predictable variable was communication scores, followed by conflict intervention by the spouse, positive problem solving by oneself, one's own retreat from conflict, the academic credential of the spouse and psychoemotional equity.

  • This study examines the social recognition of teachers' treatment and teaching profession through the comparison and analysis of the teachers' remuneration systems in the Republic of Korea(hereafter, Korea) and Canada. For this purpose, literature review and qualitative research were conducted. As a result of comparing and analyzing the orientation of teachers' remuneration systems in both countries and perception of teachers, the following differences were found. First, in terms of the management philosophy of the remuneration system, Korea emphasized the efficiency of the national competitiveness dimension, while Canada focused on the interrelationship with development of individual-oriented competency. Second, although the remuneration systems for teachers in both countries are quite different, they have aimed at establishing a reasonable remuneration system, which considers equality in common. But the position on equality was different between the two countries. In the case of Korea, equity was considered by comparing the pay scale with those of other government employees, while equity in Canada mainly had to do with gender equality. Third, the teachers of both countries regarded the sense of duty and ethics as important qualities of the teaching profession, and they recognized the social safety net as an indicator of their social status. However, there was a difference in attitude toward the teaching profession. In Korea, it was deemed to be a stable and socially desirable profession, but the entry barriers were quite high and the remuneration system was relatively rigid. In Canada, on the other hand, it was easy to enter the teaching profession and the remuneration system was far less rigid. But teachers were more likely to quit or take a second job, and their social status fluctuated.

  • The goal of vocational school is to provide students with basic skills and help develop them to have satisfactory careers. With the knowledge they have learned, it helps them to find their interests and aptitudes when they graduate. The government is putting a lot of effort into clarifying the goal accomplishment and the vision proposals of vocational schools, and the structure-oriented guidance controlled by the government is thought to be very influential to the social structure and individual perceptions. Social stereotypes(discrimination) and perceptions that can be the core of a social structure need to be transformed for people to be fulfilled in their careers in the upcoming advanced Korean society. The important solution is to form correct values and a system of career selection which can ensure a stable future for students. Therefore, to carry out research regarding training human resources in terms of students from vocational schools' landscape architecture majors in an approaching method with a new perspective, we analyzed education plans from vocational schools in 11 regions, textbooks used in common, governmental publications regarding career education policies of vocational schools and questionnaires from students who are majoring in landscape architecture at vocational schools. As a result, we were able to find out the types and the frequencies of career-occupation education at each school through analysis of education plans and the necessity to control the amount and the level of the contents for high school students to have careers in analyzing textbooks. In addition, in Ministry of Education, Science and Technology's analyzing career education policies of vocational schools, we figured out the government's policies and directions of training. From the questionnaires from students majoring in landscape architecture, we were able to compare and analyze the satisfaction level of students on career education(education plans), textbooks, governmental career policies and career selection.

  • This paper empirically examines the reemployment pattern (full-time versus part-time reemployment) using pooling 6 year data of Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS, 1998-2003). A discrete data analysis (multi-nominal logistic regression) is adopted to identify variables predicting reemployment pattern. Among those who lose full-time or part-time job in previous year, women and older people are found to have both longer unemployment durations and lower probabilities of full-time reemployment (versus either each of part-time reemployment or unemployment) than men and younger people. Therefore, the future labor market policy should be more associated with the one for reducing these gender and age differences in worker characteristics.

  • Social enterprises can be identified roughly as social purpose-oriented business ventures. They often fill the gaps left by governmental and commercial ventures in providing for certain vulnerable sectors of society. Though social enterprises often adopt market mechanisms in their organizational structures, their emphasis on particular social outcomes means that they intentionally pursue double/triple-bottom lines, thus distinguishing them from many traditional for-profit businesses. Among the Korean laborers, women have been hardest hit by the global economic crisis. As the movements have substantially been taken to strengthen women's economic activities in the recent years, many policies are formulated with these trends, connecting women's employment with social enterprises. This study focused on analyzing social enterprises to be friendly and to provide decent work to women. Data were collected from 491 social enterprises and 830 workers. The main results are as follows. First, the women's employment in social enterprises has accounted for a relatively high rate and the women's wage also is similar to men's one. Second, as for work conditions and types, most women have preferred irregular and non-managerial work. Thus, social enterprises have showed a positive response for the women's job opportunities, while social enterprises have had a negative one for enhancing the women's status at the labor market. In conclusion, social enterprises should institutionalize how to provide more stable working condition to women and to improve their's capacity.
