  • The cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared by wet disk-milling (WDM) and fractionated by settling method into supernatant, middle and sediment fractions. The diameter and its distribution of the fractionated CNFs were investigated. With increasing WDM passing number, precipitation became delayed. Weight fraction at sediment fraction was decreased, whereas those at supernatant and middle fractions were increased with increasing WDM passing number. Diameter distribution of CNFs at supernatant fraction was narrowest and became broaden at middle and sediment fraction. Filtration time was longer in order of supernatant, middle and sediment fraction.

  • The pancreatic endocrine cells, glucagon and somatostation, of the Korean tree squirrel. Sciurus vulgais corea, were investigation by means of light and electron microscopic immunohistochemistry using the PAP and protein A-gold techniques. Glucagon-immunoreactive cells were distributed the periphery and occasinonaly central region of the pancreatic islets. Also, isolated cell was found between the pancreatic ancinar cells. The glucagon cells contraine granules with a diameter of 240~320nm and the electron dense core usually surrounded by a halo of less dense granular material. The core of granule was labelled strongly with gold particles. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were weakly stained in scattered along the peripheral pancreatic islets and were distributed as singly or small groups with in the pancreatic acinar cells. The somatostatin cells were spherical with a diameter of 250~275nm, moderately electron opaque (Gold particles were mostly demonstrated on the entire granule.

  • In this paper, the double-refractive index profile, which is generalized a trapezoidal index profile, is proposed to study the characteristics of a optical fiber in the wave length 1.55um. Being compared with a triangle profile, it has many advantages over an optimum core radius, the minimum refractive index difference and the change of chromati dispersion characteristics with wavelength. Though the value of a varies from 2 to infinite, the same results are approximately obtained. Therefore, in fabrication of a fiber, the step part of trapezoidal index profile can replace the profile of a-power refractive index. Because the refractive index presented in this paper varies with a, it can be applied to multiple cladding fiber or segmented core fiber. And it is expected that the characteristics of the fiber are obtained.

  • Six commonly used non-linear growth functions were fitted to individual tree height-dbh data of eight major tree species measured by the $5^{th}$ National Forest Inventory in Chungcheong province. A total of 2,681 trees were collected from permanent sample plots across Chungcheong province. The available data for each species were randomly splitted into two sets: the majority (90%) was used to estimate model parameters and the remaining data (10%) were reserved to validate the models. The performance of the models was compared and evaluated by $R^2$, RMSE, mean difference (MD), absolute mean difference (AMD) and mean difference(MD) for diameter classes. The combined data (100%) were used for final model fitting. The results showed that these six sigmoidal models were able to capture the height-diameter relationships and fit the data equally well, but produced different asymptote estimates. Sigmoidal growth models such as Chapman-Richards, Weibull functions provided the most satisfactory height predictions. The effect of model performance on stem volume estimation was also investigated. Tree volumes of different species were computed by the Forest Resources Evaluation and Prediction Program using observed range of diameter and the predicted tree total height from the six models. For trees with diameter less than 30 cm, the six height-dbh models produced very similar results for all species, while more differentiation among the models was observed for large-sized trees.

  • Nanoparticles with unsaturated poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (UPHAs) biosynthesized with Pseudo-monas oleovorans were prepared by spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. The influence of nanoparticle formation was investigated with various experimental parameters such as sonication conditions, sol-vent, surfactant and polymer contents, etc. The physical and chemical properties of UPHAS and its nanoparticles were characterized using $^1$H- and $\^$13/C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of particles was observed using scanning electron microscope and the size and distribution of nanoparticles were measured with electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer. The mean diameter of particles decreased with increasing sonication amplitude and time. The addition of ethanol into UPHAS chloroform solution decreased the particle size presumably due to increased solvent diffusion into water phase. The particle size increased with increased the concentration of UPHAS solution. Under the 2-4% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution the minimum mean diameter of particles was shown. The higher degree of hydrolysis and degree of polymerization of PVA increased the mean diameter of particles.

  • For the purpose to verify the physicochemical properties of Korean waxy wheat, comparative analyses between waxy wheat lines and their respective maternal parents were performed on mixing and pasting properties, and flour particle sizes. The particle sizes of waxy wheat flour were significantly larger than those of their parents when milled in a same condition. Although the protein contents of flour in waxy wheat lines tested were high as much as those of bread wheat, the quality parameters showed lower baking uses based on sedimentation volumes and mixing characteristics. Waxy flour required more water than non-waxy flour to obtain the proper mixogram. Waxy wheat flour showed more or less higher onset pasting temperatures and much higher breakdown viscosities than their respective parent flour in the Rapid Viscograph test. Moreover, peak viscosity temperatures and final viscosities were dramatically reduced in waxy wheat lines by showing $79.4 - 81.7^{\circ}C$ and 101 116.9 RVU, respectively, compared to their parents in that the temperatures above $95^{\circ}C$ and the viscosity ranges of 148 -171.8 RVU.

  • The two commonly used methods in delivering intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) plan are the dynamic (sliding window) and static (stop and shoot) mode. In this study, the two IMRI delivery techniques are compared by measuring point dose and dose distributions. Using treatment planning system, clinical target volume (CTV) was created as a sphere with various diameter (3 cm, 7 cm, 12 cm). Two IMRT plans were peformed to deliver 200 cGy to the CTV in dynamic and static mode. The two plans were delivered on a phantom and central point dose and dose distributions were measured. The central point dose differences between static and dynamic IMRT delivery were 0.2%, 0.2% and 0.4% when the diameter of CTV was 3 cm, 7 cm, and 12 cm, respectively. The differences In volume receiving 90% of the proscribed dose were 2.7%, 2.2%, and 2.9% for the diameter of CTV was 3 cm, 7 cm, and 12 cm, respectively. For lung cancer patients, the differences in central point dose were 0.2%, 0.2%, and 0.4% when the volume of CTV was 35.5 cc, 296.8 cc, and 903.5 cc, respectively. The differences in volume receiving 90% of the prescribed dose were 2.7%, 4.8%, and 9.1% when the volume of CTV was 35.5 cc, 296.8 cc, and 903.5 cc, respectively. In conclusion, it was possible to deliver IMRT plans using dynamic mode of MLC operation although the loaves are In motion during radiation delivery.

  • This study was conducted to construct a empirical yield table for Pinus densiflora in real forest. Since existing normal yield tables have been derived by studying and analyzing communities in ideal environment for tree growth, those tables provide more over-estimated values than ones from real forest. Because of this, there are some difficulties to apply the tables to empirical forest except for normal forest. In this study, therefore, we estimated stand growth for real forest on P. densiflora as the representative species of conifers. We used 1,957 sample plot data of P. densiflora in central Korea from National Forest Inventory (NFI) system, and analyzed through estimation, recovery and prediction in order by using Weibull function as a diameter distribution model. Weilbull and Schumacher models were applied for estimating mean DBH and mean basel area and it was found that the site index for P. densiflora in central Korea ranges from 8 to 14 at reference age 30. According to site 12 in the stand yield table, the Mean Annual Increment (MAI) of P. densiflora was $4.42m^3/ha$ at 30 years of age. Compared to existing volume table constructed before, it is showed that MAI of this study were lower. According to the paired t-test that is conducted with the gap of volume values between normal forest and real forest by site index and age, the P-value was less than 0.001 which is recognized to have a statistically significant difference. Based on the results in this study, it is considered to be helpful for practical management and management policy on P. densiflora in central Korea.

  • The natural mixed stand in Jindong-Ri, according to a recent study, showed the possibility of selection cutting as a silvicultural system based on the stand structure such as DBH distribution and height distribution. However, volume structure per DBH class of this stand had not a mature stand of selection cutting. In this study, wherefore, the rate of increment for DBH and volume was used to predict the future stand structure including volume distribution per DBH class. The possibility of selection cutting was then discussed using the future stand structure. From the prediction of future stand structure for 30 years per every 10 years, it could be concluded that the stand will be induced to selection cutting forest because of enough number of trees in objective DBH class and above, total volume per hectare, and the volume of large DBH class which can be harvested every year. However, this stand still did not show the structure of typical selection cutting which has the rate of 1 : 2 : 7 in the number of trees per hectare and the volume rate of 5 : 3 : 2 for large, medium, and small DBH class. This problem could be improved by appropriate silvicultural treatments.

  • Recognizing the necessity of the development of ecologically sound silvicultural system for the mature Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), this study was carried out to examine the invasion and growth of understory vegetation after partial cutting. In 1997, the age class VII Korean pine forest in the Experimental Forest of Kangwon National University was opened up about 50% by modified shelterwood cutting with site preparation to induce succeeding regenerations. After 10 years, plenty of hardwood have come to the stand, forming understory vegetation. The abundance and composition of understory vegetation was periodically investigated in the ten $10m{\times}10m$ permanent sample plots, estimating importance values, species diversity index and the distribution of diameter and height of the understory vegetation. Encouraged by canopy opening, the coverage of understory reached perfect closure, composed of 22 tree species and 20 shrub species in 2007. Morus bombycis occupied 29.6% of the total importance value and Cornus controversa was 17.0%, followed by Styrax obassia, Quercus aliena, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, and Pinus koraiensis. In the year of 2000 the species diversity was highest as 2.547 with 26 tree species and deceasing thereafter, showing 2.220 with 22 tree species in 2007. As understory layer was thickly covered and got grow bigger, some shade intolerant species were disappeared, lowering species diversity. In 2007 the biggest tree was a Quercus aliena with 11.3 cm of DBH and the tallest tree was a Cornus controversa with 9.8m of height. The frequency distribution of number of trees by diameter and height classes formed the inverted-J-shaped curve, supposed to be typical uneven-aged stand.
