  • J. J. Schwab is usually considered as the founder of the concept of scientific enquiry, perhaps the most important key word of science education of the 20th century. Mainly through the method of literature review, this study reappraises Schwab's life as a science educator as well as a curriculum scholar, and his ideas concerning several important issues about science and science education. Like other eminent science educators, before the 1950s, who were originally talented scientists but later became engaged in educational activities, Schwab were trained and known as a genetic scientist, but later he concentrated on university reform, curriculum studies and science education. His academic interest was very diverse across different disciplines, from biology and science in general to history, philosophy and education. The essence of his theory of scientific enquiry was 'to teach science as science', and the best way to do it was 'to teach science as enquiry'. With enquiry, however, he tried to deliver some important but differentiated meanings, for example by distinguishing 'science as enquiry' and 'teaching as enquiry', and 'static enquiry' and 'fluid enquiry'. Scientific enquiry was the core concept upon which many of his ideas concerning science education and education in general were based, such as the diversity of science, textbooks, curriculum and roles of teachers. In summary, Schwab can be characterized as a rational reformist of science education, who tried to identify the very nature and goals of the discipline and to bring its substantial changes with concrete and practical guidelines. Nevertheless, some of his ideas, like the diversity of science and conceptual invention, have been handed down by his followers frequently with considerable distortion.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of abduction suggested by C. S. Peirce, and to discuss its implications in science education. Peirce's abduction is the logic of generating hypothesis. Abduction is a kind of logical inference, which colligates general rule and the observed result, and then it makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of their resemblance. The process of abduction is also the logic of inquiry. In a Peirce's view, inquiry is a struggle for escaping from the condition of 'doubt' and to 'belief the nature of which is the establishment of habits. Because what habit an object has is its whole meaning, in his views, the fixation of belief is the way of attaining the truth related to it. The beliefs of individuals, however, are always fallible. So, to attain a truth, we need the terminal opinion of community of inquiry that could conduct infinite inquiry. These characteristics of Peirce's abduction give suggestions in science education as follows; firstly, hypothesis generating which transforms the condition of 'doubt' into the 'belief by considering practical effects should be highlighted, secondly, logical inference which makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of resemblance should be highlighted, and thirdly, communities of inquiry which stand on the view of modest realism should be intended toward. These results could be expected in playing a role in critical discussion on science education relating to abduction.

  • The deep tunnel in urban area is a future-oriented construction plan that allows the above-ground space to be used as an eco-friendly park and transportation infrastructure to be constructed in the underground space. However, tunnel construction is often depicted as to cause ground collapse in some media and movies. In fact, while the construction of a deep tunnel in the urban area is underway, the project face with difficulties due to opposition complaints from residents near the route. In this study, we sought to identify perceptions on deep space development and citizen concerns through a public opinion survey regarding deep tunnels. By analyzing laws relevant with the promotion of deep tunnel construction, we reviewed the possibility of public engagement at each stage of the construction and investigated separated surface rights related to compensation for underground space. Through the results of the public opinion survey, it was identified that the concerns of citizens were problems that current technology could solve. Citizen's concerns were improved into a system that confirmed the stability of tunnel construction through public participation, and improvement measures were presented to encourage cooperation from those concerned regarding the establishment of divided superficies.

  • A vast body of inscribed bricks has been found connected to the mid-fourth-century Tomb of Jang Mui in Bongsan-gun, Hwanghae-do Province. After several inspections of the bricks conducted at the National Museum of Korea in 2023, these inscribed bricks were grouped into ten types. This paper interprets in detail the phrases written on these bricks from the Tomb of Jang Mui in an attempt to understand their characteristics and intentions. This detailed interpretation facilitates a rough understanding of how each phrase relates to the others and in what order the phrases would make full sentences. In terms of their contents, these inscribed bricks are presumed to have been produced to convey information about the construction of the tomb to viewers on the outside. In particular, they relate that a narrator referred to as a Jubu official named Jo was involved in the construction of the Tomb of Jang Mui. They can be compared to the inscribed bricks created in China during the Western Jin and Eastern Jin Dynasties that were produced not by family members of the tomb occupants, but by figures who participated in the construction of the tombs based on political and social connections to their occupants. During the mid-fourth century, funeral practices in the former lands of the Nangnang and Daebang Commanderies followed Chinese traditions with the permission of Goguryeo Kingdom. Many of the artifacts found inside these Chinese-style tombs and introduced to the public, including the murals, ink inscriptions, and inscribed bricks, are related to the desire of the family members of the tomb occupants to strengthen their bonds and to share emotions and goals with settler groups. The contents of the inscribed bricks discovered from the Tomb of Jang Mui can be observed in this context.

  • In an academic ecosystem evolving into open science, open peer review is gaining attention as a way to enhance transparency and openness in scholarly communication. This study examines the adoption of open peer review components in 118 open access journals that have implemented open peer review, and their characteristics by publisher type, country/continent, language, and discipline. Open peer review has been implemented in a variety of ways, including making review reports or pre-prints publicly available or disclosing the identities of authors and reviewers to each other. We also found differences in the components adopted across disciplines. It appears that commercial publishers, which account for a large proportion of publisher types, have generally adopted it, and it is mainly published in English in European countries. By discipline, we find more open peer review in the medical and natural sciences, which traditionally aim for open scholarly communication and fewer journals in the multidisciplinary and humanities. This provides insights into the adoption of open peer review by journals, as well as a better understanding of the characteristics of the academic community in terms of their adoption of open peer review.

In the scope and method of this study, 766 pieces of ancient paintings(6 garden paintings and 760 folk paintings) which were available and had value as literatures, and 8 of ancient literatures were intensively examined. Main results extracted from them are as follows. First, the most frequently used Flowering Plants in Joseon Dynasty were Prunus mume, pbyllostachys, Nelumbo nucifera, Chrysanthemum morifolium, Musa basjoo, Rosa spp., Rhododendron mucronulatum, Paeonia lactiflora, which appeared 11 times to 16 times in total. Next frequently(4 times to 8 times) used Flowering Plants were Gardenia jasminoides, Punica granatum(8 times), Dianthus chinensis, Vitis vinifera(7 times), Orchidaceae, Syringa velutina, Impatiens balsamina, Hemerocallis fulva, Celosia cristata, Hibiscus Syriacus, Rhododendron indicum(6 times), Rhododendron, Rhododendron obutusum, Acorus calamus, Althaea rosea, Kerria japonica, Citrus junos(5 times), Hibiscus mutabilis, Lychnis cognata, Calendula officnalis, Begonia rex., Helianthus annuus, Papaver spp., Narcissus tazetta, Daphne odora, Hosta plantaginea(4 times). Second, usage of the Flowering Plants in Joseon Dynasty can be divided into character building and horticulture for pleasure through positive, scientific approach attempt. It suggests that there might have been classes in the use of them and we can estimate which plants were particularly preferred. Third, in the symbolicity of the usage of Flowering Plants, it can be divided into three parts: The case of representing integrity, gentleman, honesty and nobility and the thought of loyalty and filial piety under the influence of Confucianism. The case of representing Taoism's thought of hermit and perennial youth and long life. The case of representing wish on wealth and prosperity. • Background: Although we gain new knowledge, the problem of pneumonia will not be eliminated. We should understand who is at risk, why these people develop this problem, what causes the pneumonia, and how to manage and prevent respiratory infection. To clarify the alterations of the etiologies of bacterial pneumonia we analysed the recent causative organisms and evaluated the therapeutic implications. Methods: A retrospective four-year study of bacterial pneumonia was conducted in Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital. 190 episodes of bacterial pneumonia was investigated. Results: 1) The causative organisms were isolated in 173 cases on the sputum culture: 154 cases (89%) were gram negative bacilli and 19 cases(11%) were gram positive cocci. The major organisms were Pseudomonas species 49 cases(28%), Klebsiella pneumoniae 29 cases(17%), Enterobacter species 25 cases(14%), and Acinetobacter species 20 cases(12%) in decreasing order. Pseudomonas species(13 cases, 34%) were frequently found in nosocomial pneumonia. 2) The causative organisms were isolated in 16 cases on the blood culture: 7 cases(43%) were gram negative bacilli and 9 cases(57%) were gram positive cocci. The major organisms were Staphylococcus aureus(6 cases, 38%), Pseudomonas species(3 cases, 19%) in decreasing order. 3) In the susceptibility test of causative organisms to antimicrobial drugs, Pseudomonas was susceptible to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, aztreonam, ceftazidime(more than 50%) and resistant to piperacillin, gentamicin, carbenicillin(more than 60%). Klebsiella was susceptible to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, cefotetan(more than 70%) and resistant to carbenicillin, ampicillin(more than 70%). Staphylococcus was susceptible to methicillin(64%), and Streptococcus pneumoniae was susceptible to oxacillin(94%). 4) The response rate after antibiotics therapy was 81% and the mortality rate was 19%. Conclusion: As considering the changes of causative organisms and antibiotic resistance, it behooves us to exercise caution in dispending antibiotics in order to maximize their continued efficacy and to do appropiate antibiotics therapy based on cultures and susceptibility test.
