  • The Single-channel seismic survey with the source of bubble pulser and drilling survey was carried out in 2008 and 2009 for the site survey of Daecheon-Wonsando area, which was a proposed area of Korea-China subsea tunnel. The goal of this study is to analyze the depth and characteristics of acoustic basement for the stability assessment and tunnel design in this proposed area through combining drilling data with this single-channel seismic data after detailed processing. For this purpose, among the data processing schemes which are usually applied to multi-channel seismic data, we applied the F-K filtering to eliminate the AC(alternating current) noise and the post-stack depth migration to produce depth section. As a result, we verified that the improved depth section could be obtained from single-channel seismic data, and the distribution and characteristics of basement could be analyzed in survey area through the combined analysis with drilling data. However, we could not interpret the detailed structures, fault and fracture zone, due to the quality of bubble pulser source and single-channel data. We expect that those detailed structures can be analyzed when higher resolution seismic data is provided. Therefore, we recommend some items for future seismic survey of subsea tunnel to obtain the high resolution seismic data.

  • There are two paradigms to explain the atopic dermatitis. The first is outside-inside paradigm and the second is inside-outside paradigm. According to the outside-inside paradigm the best way to treat the atopic dermatitis is recovery of skin barrier function. The barrier function is maintained by the specific structure of stratum corneum, which is constructed from corneocytes and intercellular lipids. In terms of lipid structures of SC in atopic dermatitis and lamellar ichthyosis, they contain more fluid hexagonal gel structures in SC and show deficiencies in free fatty acids, especially long chains and certain ceramides. With this reason, moisturizer which has the lamellar structure and restoring function of intrinsic intercellualr long periodicity phase can maintain and restore the lamellar structure of intercellular lipids in SC. The moisturizers containing ceramide or pseudoceramide also seem to be reasonable therapy for atopic dermatitis and several skin diseases, which interrelated with impaired skin harrier. By the way, according to the inside-outside paradigm, immune response including helper T cells, IgE, eosinophils is related. It is effective treatment of atopic dermititis to restore imbalance between Th1 and Th2 cells. Even though several kinds of immune-suppressor were introduced, these can affect the intrinsic immune function. SPC and S1P, metabolites of ceramide, would be interesting because they have the function of wound healing and immune modulating properties.

  • Kilauea volcano located in the southern part of Hawaii island chains has been formed by continuous and sporadic eruption activities from 16 century to September of 1982. Kilauea volcano was investigated from collecting the samples of basalt to identify the geochemical characteristics of the lavas. Olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals with glass groundmass are observed. Clinopyroxene formed glomerophopyritic texture with plagioclase and zoning texture was observed in some of plagioclase phenocrysts. Major elements such as $K_2O$, $P_2O_5$, $TiO_2$ increased with respect to MgO. $Al_2O_3$ and CaO show the kink on Marker diagram due to the crystal fractionation of plagioclase and clinopyroxene with plagioclase respectively. Olivine has a wide range of Fo% ranging from 60 to 90, and MnO and FeO in the olivine are decreased with increasing Fo% oppositely increased $SiO_2$, MgO, and NiO. Ni in the whole rock is controlled not only by the mode of olivine but also by the Ni abondance in the olivine.

  • A 3.5 kHz or chirp sub-bottom profiling survey is widely used in the marine geological and engineering purpose exploration. However, swells in the sea degrade the quality of the survey data. The horizontal continuity of profiler data can be enhanced and the quality can be improved by correcting the influence of the swell. Accurate detection of sea bottom location is important in correcting the swell effect. In this study, we tried to pick sea bottom locations by finding the position of crossing a threshold of the maximum value for the raw data and transformed data of envelope or energy ratio. However, in case of the low-quality data where the sea bottom signals are not clear due to sea wave noise, automatic sea bottom detection at the individual traces was not successful. We corrected the mispicks for the low quality data and obtained satisfactory results by picking a sea bottom within a range considering the previous average of sea bottom, and excluding unreliable big-difference picks. In case of trace by trace picking, fewest mispicks were found when using energy ratio data. In case of picking considering the previous average, the correction result was relatively satisfactory when using raw data.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of pork loin meat through microwave treatment. The microwave treatment was divided into two groups: continuing microwave treatment (CW) and holding microwave treatment (HW). The microwave treatment resulted in a whiter color (L value) and affected the a, b value. The initial pH was 5.51~5.74, but it increased to 6.32~6.51 when the pork loin samples were stored for three days. During storage for 14 days, the pH changes were not significantly different (p>0.05). The thiobarbituric-acid values of all the pork loin samples increased along with the storage period, and decreased with increasing microwave dose. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) content of the control was higher than those of the other samples, and the VBN content decreased along with the microwave dose. The total plate counts of the pork loin samples decreased with increasing microwave dose. The study results indicated that T2 (100 W, HW) is most effective for the safety of pork loin meat without decreasing the meat's physicochemical and microbiological characteristics.

  • The synthesis of phospholipids and the composition of fatty acids were analyzed in the fungal cells of Aspergillus phoenicis, Rhizopus acidus and Candida albicans treated with carbon sources (glucose, sucrose, raffinose) during the culture. Growth ratios were predominantly in Aspergillus and Candida treated with sucrose and those in Rhizopus treated with glucose. The synthesis of total lipids were accelerated in Aspergillus and Rhizopus with glucose and the contents of total lipid was increased in Candida with raffinose. The glucose treatment increased Phosphatidylinositol(PI) content by 73.7% for Aspergillus and Phosphatidylcholine(PC) content by 292% for Rhizopus. In sucrose treatment the synthesis of PI was accelerated 112% for Aspergillus and that of PC was increased 77.7% for Rhizopus and 71.8% for Candida. In raffinose treatment, the content of PC was increased 79.5% for Aspergillus, the biosynthesis of Phosphatidylethanolamine(PE) was inhanced 50.9% for Rhizopus and 49.1% for Candida. In Aspergillus and Candida, oleic acid and linoleic acid were major fatty acids for biosynthesis of PC and PE when the three carbon sources were treated. The major fatty acids for biosynthesis of phospholipid was palmitic acid and linoleic acid in Aspergillus, palmitic acid in Rhizopus and oleic acid in Candida. Palmitic acid was one of major fatty acids utilized for the biosynthesis of phospholipid(PC, PE, PI) in the fungal cells treated with carbohydrates.

  • As a preliminary study to establish fracture network model in crystalline rocks, detail investigation on fracture characteristics were performed. Five fracture sets were determined on the basis of regional survey of geological structures and fractures on outcrops. Among the fracture sets, S1 set has the highest density and longest trace length of fractures which was identified on surface in the study area. S4 and S5 sets are composed of foliations and foliation parallel shear joints of gneisses, which are very important sets at the aspect of weighting of fracture length. For characterization of subsurface fractures, detail core logging was performed to identify fractures and fracture zones from five boreholes. Acoustic televiewer logging and borehole geophysical loggings produced images, orientations and geophysical properties of fractures which intersect with boreholes. According to the result of the investigations, subsurface fractures can be grouped as three preferred orientations(B1, B2 and B3), which correspond to S1, S2 and S4/S5 of surface fracture sets, respectively. Actually, B1 set is expected to be intensely developed at subsurface. However, it has low frequency of intersection with boreholes due to its parallel or sub-parallel direction to boreholes. According to the inference of conductive fractures, B1 and B3 sets have possibilities of water flow and their intersection lines are also thought to consist of important conduits of groundwater flow. In particular, faults which are parallel to foliations control major groundwater flow in the study area.

  • The geological survey of the Mokdo island is for the fist time conduted in Korea history. The island had erupted before $70{\sim}80$ million years as a strato-volcano. The original volcano had been dissected for long periods up to the skeletal stage through the planeze stage. If the island area is surveyed afterwrds in detail, the position of crater is available to be found, either. The coastal terrace is found at 50m level in Mokdo island which is correlated to its fourth plane. The microgeomorphological features as coastal terrace, cliff, sea cave, wave-cut bench, sea stacks, notch, and tafoni, etc. were described. The Mogdo island is located off Molundae at the extension of Nagdong Jeongmaeg(낙동정맥 洛東正脈) showing a "floating turtle". The name of Mogdo island is needed to change to the "Yoo-goo-do" which means the swimming turtle. The Mokdo island is as suitable tourist attraction for if has enough touism sesouccesein sea. The deuelopsment of coartal sightseeing anound lighthoure and uninhabited islands will hare an impontant effect upon construction of the oceanic capitol city of Busan Haabor. The master plan built up an arboretum on the island, a coastal oceanarium, a seaweeds garden under sea coast, and other oceanic culture-spaces is completed in the study.

  • Water and methanol extracts of cricket were examined for their liver protective effects against $CCl_4-intoxication$ in ICR-mice. Serum transaminases (S-GOT and S-GPT), lactate dehydrogense (LDH) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities and TBARS (Thiobarbiturate-reactive substances) content were measured for evaluation of liver protective effects. The activities of GOT, GPT, LDH and hepatic content of lipid peroxide after $CCl_4-treatment$ were higher than normal control but those levels decreased th 74, 50, 101 and 40%, respectively, by the treatment of cricket methanol extract. The anti-fatigue effects of water and methanol extracts investigated by an acute weight-loaded forced swimming test showed significantly prolonged swimming time in the mice administered cricket extracts. These results suggest us that water/alcohol extract of G. bimaculatus may be used as a liver protective food.
