  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify differences and influencing factors in the level of life satisfaction among the urban community-dwelling elderly by age group. Methods: The study was conducted utilizing the secondary data of 2017 Seoul Survey in a cross-sectional design. Of 42,688 participants in total, the data of 7,927 adults aged 65 or older were analyzed. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, chi-square test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. Results: There were significant differences between age groups, and it was found that the old elderly groups had significantly higher life satisfaction than the oldest elderly group (t=8.37, p<.011). In common, family and community factors influencing life satisfaction in the two age groups were companion animals (old elderly: β=.03, p=.002; oldest elderly: β=.06, p=.021), social network (old elderly: β=.10, p<.001; oldest elderly: β=.08, p=.008), and social support (old elderly: β=.05, p<.001; oldest elderly: β=.08, p=.005). Conclusion: Based on these results, social welfare and nursing care services focusing on social capital and age group-specific interventions are needed to improve life satisfaction of the elderly. This study might provide the possibility and evidence for a program to improve life satisfaction for the urban community-dwelling elderly, including social capital elements.

In addition, we analyze the mediating effects of social support from the school director and fellow teachers on the relation between positive psychological capital and happiness. To achieve these aims, a survey was conducted targeting 205 childcare teachers in Gyeonggi province. Results of this study are as follows: First, there were significantly positive correlations between positive psychological capital, social support, and happiness. Furthermore, positive psychological capital and social support from the school director and fellow teachers had positive effects on the happiness of childcare teachers. Second, the social support from the school director and fellow teachers had partially mediating effects on the relation between positive psychological capital and happiness. This implies that positive psychological capital and social support from the school director and fellow teachers play essential roles in the enhancement of happiness of childcare teachers.

  • This paper aims to analyze the rise and decline of Seattle Community Network(briefly SCN), an electronic community network based upon Seattle, U.S. from the perspective of 'social shaping of technology' theory rather than that of technological determinism That is, this paper focuses on the social processes of the evolution of SCN. And this paper considers SCN as one important element of the 'network society', a concept manufactured by Manuel Castells. SCN was built successfully over 10 years ago by some progressive local activists and volunteers. The main purpose of building SCN at that time was said to make local community stronger with the help of advanced information technology. This can be understood that the founders of SCN tried to shape the direction of network society development based on civil society's values including public access and commitment to democracy rather than those of private companies. After some years of successful working, however, SCN started to decline. The expansion of internet services and the booming of dot.com companies in the late 90's were the main factors that made SCN decline. In conclusion, it can be said that the socia-economic factors rather than technological factors gave birth to the rise and decline of SCN.

The participants expressed and shared their experiences through photos and discussions using the Photo-voice method under the theme of 'community life, its meaning and change'. The main themes were 1. In the past, 'community life,' non-meaningful space; 2. Now, we have shared identity, 'You are not alone'; 3. Our village which is a new place in my life. The article also may suggest issues on both community intervention for early children development program and organization for fosterers as social capital. Additionally, photo-voice method enabled participants to find the way to restructure their community from non-place to place. There were three stages, the first was to reflect on their community, the second was to re-inhabit in the community, and the last was to restore the community.

  • Recently, attention has been drawn to the issue of local community revitalization. In the U.S., CDC(Community Development Corporation) has become a main vehicle for revitalizing dilapidated inner-city communities. Using the case of Philadelphia in the U.S., this paper investigates the way in which local community revitalization or downtown revitalization can be successfully achieved through the formation of social capital and public-private partnership. Futhermore, exploring the cases of West Philadelphia CDC and University City, this paper seeks to provide insight into the dynamics of successful community development. In order to examine the dynamics, this paper focuses on local governance in terms of both the reciprocal partnerships and the close networking among participating agents. The implications of the case studies of this research for the Korean context would be that the bottom-up approach starting from the local-scale community revitalization and local governance is very crucial and indispensable for the sustainable regional or national development.

  • This study aimed to construct and test a hypothetical model to explain health-promoting behaviors among high school students in Korea. Data were collected from a self-administered questionnaire of 395 first-year to third-year students at a high school in Gyeonggi-do area. The exogenous variables of this study were family function, friend support, school life environment, and social capital of the local community, and endogenous variables were self-efficacy, self-regulation, and health-promoting behaviors. Data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 22.0. The final model with 13 of the 9 analyzed paths showed a good fit to the empirical data: χ2/df=1.96, GFI=.90, AGFI=.88, CFI=.94, TLI=.93, RMSEA=.05, SRMR=.06. The variables included in these paths were family function (β=.57), self-efficacy (β=.29), self-regulation(β=.14), the social capital of local community (β=.14), and friend support (β=.13). The variables included in the nine significant paths explained 86% of variance in the explain model. Thus, it is necessary to build up a social support system for dysfunctional families and health-promoting behaviors of adolescents in the families and develop a program for creating the environment of the local community including schools.

This study targeted 13,771 seniors from single households aged 65 and over, who were subject to the community health survey in 2014. Social capitals, stress, subjective health conditions and EQ-5D of the subjects were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. The analysis findings are as follows. The results of the model fit was good value with CFI=.906, GFI=.955, RMSEA=.074. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that for maintaining health and improving the quality of life in the elderly people living alone, families and local communities need to increase social capitals by providing care service for the elderly people living alone and grounds that they can participate in.

  • The community sense in the community is the important objectives and methods of Community Development. Community Development has been done effectively through improving the community sense in the community. It is necessary to find out what should lead th community sense in the community. It is community organizations that ate making the community sense in the community, and the community organization is more active by social capital. And the community organization is improving social capital. Therefore the relationship between community organization and social capital is very significant, and the more social capital is high by community organization, the more the community sense in the community is high. Therefore if the community organization is more active, the community sense and social capital in the community are more high. It needs to investigate what variables to affect the community organizations more active. The variables affecting the community organization are community subsystems that are administrative, economic, education, culture, family and religious in the community level. It needs to study in detail how the subsystems are affecting the community organizations.
