  • This research studies the stabilization method for improved soil sloped through the on-site application of Paper Flyash ground stabilizers. The target strength required for improved soil is 500 kPa, and the compressive strength for the slope surface needs to be less than 1,000 kPa after the improvement in order to plant vegetation. To meet this condition, we mixed soil from the site and the ground stabilization material, which is the main material for surface improvement material, performed mixing design and conducted various tests including strength test, permeability test and plantation test. After analyzing the results of the compression test on improved soil slope, we proposed soil constants for the improved soil. In order to evaluate the applicability of the improved soil on the slope, the site construction was carried out on the collapsed slope and the reinforcement evaluation of the surface of the improvement soil was conducted. The stability was not secured before the reinforcement, but the test shows after the reinforcement with improved soil, the safety rate is secured up to 48 hours during the raining period. In addition, the compressive strength of the improved soil at the site was secured at more than 200 kPa adhesion as planned, and the soil hardness test result was also found to be within the specified value of 18-23 mm, which increased the resistance to rainfall and ability to grow plant on the surface for improved soil.

  • In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of secondary consolidation in the soft clay ground, oedometer tests were carried out in a normally consolidated condition, and the consolidation characteristics of the soft clay ground were examined by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) based on the Elasto-Viscous model proposed by Yoshikuni. The consolidation tests adjusted the consolidation load increment ratio(${\Delta}p/p_0$) to 1.0 for the four cases with initial consolidation pressures of 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 kgf/$cm^2$. The long-term consolidation tests were examined by the tests that changed the load increment ratio to clarify the effect of consolidation load increment. Although the numerical analysis was delayed in the primary consolidation process, from the result of the numerical analysis of the laboratory tests, the applicability of the Elasto-Viscous model was verified from the agreement of the secondary consolidation process. Based on the developing of model ground consist of general soft clay, influences of consoliation parameters on the consolidation characteristics were studied by the numerical analysis.

  • The most important thing in the design of the reinforced earth retaining wall is to obtain the good backfill materials. However there was a special case using soils mixed with the crushed stone, because the field ran short of good backfill soils. Accordingly in this study various kind of tests were performed according to the mixing content of a crushed stone, which are the gradation curve, the direct shear test and the pullout test. From the test results at first the gradation of soils mixed with crushed stone has been compared with the selecting standard as backfill of reinforced earth wall. And the gradation standard has been satisfied in case of mixing ratio 20% of a crushed stone under 19mm. Also the direct shear test and the pullout test have been performed and at the test results the shear strength parameter and the pullout strength parameter were increased with the increse of the mixing content of a crushed stone. It has been thought that this study will give important data to a designer in designing the reinforced earth wall with soils mixed with crush stones.

  • Our country's leading granite weathered soil of the ground slope failures that occur in cutting slope most cases, it does not require in-depth to the shear strength most of the surface layer is affected by weathering (1~2 m) at a shallow depth close to the ground, it is important to identify the reliability. Based on the result obtained in actual field investigation, the field slope type was classified by each type of wedge slope, Infinite slope, finite slope -I and finite slope -II, and the slope stability was examined respectively. In addition, using the numerical analysis results, the relationship between the slope inclination angle and safety factor was analyzed and it tried to offer basic data to which the stability in the field slope was able to be estimated by analyzing the safety factor change of the slope according to the slope type. In this study, classified into four types of natural slope, safety factor estimation method by slope types is proposed through the numerical analysis. However, some limit exists in generalizing in this research because it does not test various case studies. Therefore, the case study of a wide range of various sypes to assess the safety of various types slope can be made, accommodate a wide range of field conditions reasonable risk evaluation criteria may be derived.

  • In this paper, a back analysis program for analyzing the behavior of tunnel-ground system and evaluating the material properties and tunnel design parameters was developed. This program was designed to be able to implement the back analysis of underground structure by combination of using FLAC and optimized algorithm as direct method. In particular, Rosenbrock method which is able to do direct search without obtaining differential coefficient was adopted for the back analysis algorithm among optimization methods. This back analysis program was applied to the site to evaluate the design parameters. The back analysis was carried out using field measurement results from 5 sites. In the course of back analysis, nonlinear regression analysis was carried out to identify the optimum function of the measured ground displacement. Exponential function and fractional function were used for the regression analysis and total displacement calculated by optimum function was used as the back analysis input data. As a result, displacement recalculated through the back analysis using measured displacement of the structure showed 4.5% of error factor comparing to the measured data. Hence, the program developed in this study proved to be effectively applicable to tunnel analysis.

  • According to the Korean Design Code for port and harbor facilities, bearing capacity of rubble mound under eccentric and inclined load is calculated by the simplified Bishop method, and strength parameters are recommended to be c=0.2kg/$cm^2$ and \phi=35^P\circ}$ fur standard rubble if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 300kg/$cm^2$, according to research results by Junichi Mizukami(1991). But this facts have never been verified in Korea because there was no large-scale triaxial test apparatus until 2000 in Korea. For the first time in Korea, the large-scale triaxial test(sample diameter 30cm ; height 60cm) on the rubble originated from porous basalt rock in North-Cheju was accomplished. Then strength parameters for basalt rubble produced in North-Cheju are recommended to be c:0.3kg/$cm^2\; and \phi=36^{\circ}$ if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 400kg/$cm^2$. And the shear behavior characteristics of rubble, represented as particle breakage and dilatancy, are investigated.

  • Soil investigation data at 7 different locations around Honam costal region were analyzed and experimental correlations between soil properties and parameters of soft clay were presented. Most soils were classified as CL and CH by the Unified Soil Classification System and were unstable structurally because the water contents were generally greater than the liquid limits. The compression index has good correlations with water content, liquid limit and initial void ratio. The trend of these correlations were similar to the Skempton equation Cc = 0.009(LL -10) and other studies for Korean soft clays but the constants were small different. The slope of these correlations for Honam costal region were slightly greater than those for Kyunggi costal region and Kyungnam costal region. The correlation coefficient (R) between the liquid limit and the plastic index is 0.93. It is seen that not only the water content and the liquid limit but also the water content and the initial void ratio are correlate, therefore the experimental equations were presented for the practical purpose.

  • The effects of the ratio of effective size of filter media and diatom size on filter run time were evaluated by using both reported data and experimental results from several water treatment plants. For single media at several WTPs, the range of probability of the filter run time less than 15hr was 10~60%, and for dual media, that of the filter run time less than 30hr was 10~20%. The major filter clogging algae was Synedra acus of which dominant ratio was in the range of 64~92%. The effective size(ES) of filter medium for dual media filter was 0.71~1.40mm and uniformity coefficient of the filter was 1.25~1.67. The effective size(ES) of filter medium for single medium filter was 0.52~0.65mm and uniformity coefficient of the filter was 0.25~1.40. The range of calculated penetration depth was 2.58~15.4cm for dual media and 1.29~2.17cm for single media, and average filter run time was 40.1~83.3hr and 13.9~34.9hr, respectively. When Synedra counts were over 400cells/ml for single media, filter run time was below 5hr, while filter run time for dual media filter, remained as high as 70hr.

  • Numerical simulations by three-dimensional Particle Flow Code($PFC^{3D}$, Itasca) considering distinct element method (DEM) were carried out for prediction of triaxial compression test with sand material. The effect of scale conditions for numerical model and distinct material on final prediction results was analyzed by numerical models under various scale conditions, and following observations were made from the numerical experiments. It is very useful to model the initial material condition without any porosity conversion from 2-D to 3-D DEM. Numerical experiments have shown that in all cases considered, 3D distinct element modeling could provide good agreement on stress-strain behavior, volume change and strength properties with laboratory testing results. It was important thing to assess reasonable scale ratio of numerical model and distinct elements for saving calculation time and securing calculation efficiency under condition with accuracy and appropriateness as numerical laboratory. As results of DEM simulations under various scale conditions, most of results show that shear strength properties as cohesion and internal friction angle are similar in condition of $D_{mod}/D_{gmax}$ < 10. It shows that 3-D distinct element method could be used as efficient tool to assess strength properties by numerical laboratory technique.

  • The property of weathered soil cannot but have a possibility of having a limit when its precise approaching due to the various weathering environment, and the peculiarity of its conduct affected by the weathering degree and effect factors. Especially most domestic or international researches are concentrated on the sedimentary soil, trying to analyze the mechanical behavior of weathered soil from the viewpoint of sedimentary soil. Therefore, it's difficult to judge if those results meet the actual conduct of weathered soil. This study suggested a way of weathering degree changing experiment as an early stage in an experiment of artificially changing weathering degree. In order to find out the property of strength change by the change of weathering degree, indoor mechanical experiment was made using soil sample after freezing and thawing. Under the weathering degree, characteristic change is watched by country rock and region of weathered granite soil.
