In order to find out the effect of embedment ratio on behavior compensated foundation, numerical analyses were performed. Bearing capacity ratios obtained from numerical analyses were greater than those obtained from theoretical equations and it could be seen that the bearing capacity ratio was proportional to the embedment ratio with only exception of the case of square footing in which bearing capacity ratio was increased rapidly with the embedment ratio. For the case of strip footing on sand, the bearing capacity ratios obtained from the numerical analyses and Meyerhof equation were similar with each other and magnitudes of those were as much as square of the embedment ratio but the bearing capacity ratios were little affected by the embedment ratios for the case of strip footing on clay. It can be said that the bearing capacity ratios obtained from the square footing are greater than those obtained from the strip footing. According to the numerical analysis, values of settlement ratios which correspond to the embedment ratio of one were about 0.4 and settlement ratios were decreased with increase of the embedment ratios. Settlement ratios of the loose sand were smaller than those of the dense sand and the clay.
The domestic design method for the shaft resistance of drilled shafts into a bedrock is based on the empirical method, where the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimen is utilized for calculation of the shaft resistance. This method has uncertainties in prediction of capacity of drilled shafts and result in uneconomic engineering design. Recently a new improved design method was suggested, which reflects important factors that affect the strength of pile sockets. Socket roughness is one of the significant factors influencing the shaft resistance of drilled shaft socketed into rock. In this paper roughness information for the shaft resistance design of socket pile was suggested on the basis of statistical analysis of data measured from wall surface in the bore holes of drilled shafts.

The studies on the bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations have been made in various fields and formulas for various failure mechanisms have been presented. But, for these models, the method of classification with foundation depth has been obscure and bearing capacity factors have not been uniformly applied. An experiment was performed, in plane strain conditions, with ground model made of carbon rods. The failure mechanism of foundation and ultimate bearing capacity with foundation depth were observed. Based on experimental results the classification between shallow and deep foundations by failure shape was tried. Various present failure mechanisms of foundation were verified through the experiment.
Many electric poles in the softground have been collapsed due to external load. In this study, 10 types of tests were performed with variation of location, numbers and depths of anchor blocks as well as depth of poles to find horizontal earth pressure through full scale pull-out tests. The horizontal earth pressure increased with embedded depth of electric pole, and earth pressure of lower passive zone decreased. The deeper of anchor block, earth pressure of passive zone becomes less. lateral displacements showed differences depending on location, numbers and depth of poles. The bending is generated in the upper part at the initial load, but it moved to central part as load increased. The maximum horizontal displacement decreased to 1/1.6 at -0.5m depth of anchor block and 1.3m additional laying depth of poles into ground.
Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is being used increasingly in geotechnical design practice worldwide, and is expected to completely replace the current Allowable Stress Design (ASD) method in the near future. LRFD has advantages over ASD in that it allows the design of superstructures and substructures at a consistent reliable level by quantification of failure probability based on reliability analysis. At present, resistance factors for cast-in-place piles embedded in rocks are determined by AASHTO only for the intact rock conditions. In Korea, however, most of the bedrocks in which piles are embedded are heavily weathered. Thus, this study will try to determine the resistance factors of heavily weathered rocks (so-called intermediate goo-materials). To this aim, reliability analysis was carried out to evaluate the resistance factors of cast-in-place piles embedded in intermediate geo-materials in Korea. Pile load test data of 21 cast-in-place piles of 4 construction sites were used for the analysis. Depending on the method which calculates the pile capacities, the resulting resistance factors ranged between 0.1 and 0.6.
Rocking behavior of shallow foundation reduces the superstructure load during earthquake. However, because of deficiency of understanding of rocking mechanism and soil permanent deformation, it has not been applied to real construction. In this study, slow cyclic tests were conducted for embedded shallow foundations with various slenderness ratio via centrifuge tests. From the variation of earth pressure 'soil rounding surface' phenomenon which makes maximum overturning moment equal to ultimate moment capacity was observed. Rocking and sliding behavior mechanism was evaluated. Also, nonlinear behavior and energy dissipation increase as rotation angle increases. And ultimate moment capacity of embedded foundation is larger than that of surface foundation. Finally, adequate ultimate moment capacity can be suggested for seismic design through this study.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

Recently, earthquakes have occurred frequently in worldwide. These earthquakes cause various forms of natural and physical damage. In particular, liquefaction in which the ground shows liquid-like behavior causes great damage to the structure. Accordingly, various liquefaction damage reduction methods are being studied and developed. Therefore, in this study, a method of reducing liquefaction damage in the event of an earthquake applicable to existing structures was studied using the sheet pile method. The 1-G Shaking table test was performed and the ground was constructed with Jumunjin standard sand. A two-story model structure was produced by applying the similitude law, and the input wave applied a sine wave with an acceleration level of 0.6 g and a frequency of 10 Hz. The effect of reducing structure damage according to various embedded depth ratio was analyzed. As a result of the study, the structure settlement when the ground is reinforced by applying the sheet pile method is decreased by about 71% compared to when the ground is not reinforced, and the EDR with minimum settlement is "1". In addition, as the embedded depth ratio is increased, the calculation of the pore water pressure in the ground tends to be delayed due to the sheet pile. Based on these results, the relationship with structural settlement according to the embedded depth ratio is proposed as a relational equation with the graph. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data in developing sheet pile methods applicable to existing structures in the future.
Empiricism has characterized the traditional methods of pile design; in essence, pile design recommendations are based on the accumulated knowledge of pile behaviour based on the construction and subsequent load testing of piles in soil and rock. In this paper, the traditional approaches to design of piles in rock will be briefly reviewed. It will be shown that the unrelated empirical relationships developed fur rock lead to considerable uncertainty in the design of piles. A new method for predicting the shaft resistance of piles socketed into rock, and based on fundamental principles is outlined. It is shown that the shaft resistance predictions of this method agree well with the field test data for rock and hard soil. It is demonstrated by way of a limited parametric study that shaft roughness and socket diameter are critical factors in the performance of piles constructed in these materials. The application of the method to piles socketed into the granites and gneisses of Korea is discussed by way of a case study and by reference to recent direct shear tests on these rocks.
