  • This paper aims at three dimensional simulation and quantitative analysis fer city height planning using digital photogrammetry and GIS. Land view has been neglected while the cities in Korea have been developed rapidly and quantitatively It is, however recognized that Land viewscape is an important factor to achieve a high quality of life. Land viewing is shape and subjective, which makes quantitative and objective analysis of urban viewscape not easy. In this study, a spatial database was constructed by aerial color photographing and digital photogrammetry. The analysis of photographic image were performed using 3-D simulation. Numerical and quantitative analysis for the height planning of building was carried out by producing the vertical profiles of existing buildings and terrain at sight lines. As the result of this study, it was found that the hight planning in a city could be made quantitatively and objectively using 3-D viewscape analysis.

  • Inscriptions are integral parts of the current science textbooks, and become medium that makes sense of scientific concepts effectively. This study analyzed the inscriptions from five science textbooks at the secondary level in terms of its type, function, and structures. Analyzing types of inscriptions resulted that the ratio of frequently used photographs and illustrations were much higher than that of graphs and tables used. In case of function analysis, illustrative and complementary functions were dominant in terms of frequency and ratio, whereas explanatory, decorative and inquisitive functions were relatively rare. Inscriptions of single structure was much more than multiple structure. Multiple structure of pair and series were mainly used for representing contrast and sequence, respectively. The proportion of inscriptions in type, function and structure across the textbooks was significantly different. Based on the results, it was suggested that semiotic study about the function and the structure of inscriptions need to be carried out in earth science area to better understand the pedagogical implications of inscriptions in school science.

  • Science practice is a process of establishing new relationships with 'foreign things' such as learning objects or tools for observation and measurement. Since the practice of science in major subjects has been increasingly emphasized, we sought to understand the meaning co-created by students and numerous materials who have experienced astronomical observation as a Deleuzian experience of "becoming". We collected activity logs and photographic data written by 17 students participating in astronomical observation activities at "A" High School, and conducted in-depth interviews with the students. We assessed the collected data by reconstructing a situation analysis. The main research results include the students' existential-epistemological 'becoming' process: 1) discovering newness through repetition, 2) becoming an 'explanation machine' to convey the affect of astronomical observation activities, 3) breaking out of a stabilized territory, and crossing a threshold. Based on the results, we suggested the need for follow-up research on the practices and new experimental approaches of teachers in earth science education.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a educational data in order for students to perform geologic field survey effectively by themselves. A area around the Duta Mountain is selected. which is located at the southeastern part of Eumsung sedimentary basin because various rock types and geologic structures are well shown in this area and also it is convenient to reach there. Thirteen stops for observation are chosen m a route f3r exercising field geologic investigation. Data for field research are given and described in detail from each stop for observation. To do this, students make their own route map using general or digital geographic map and aerial photo is added to know relationship between large-scale structure and different rock types regionally. Moreover, it is designed to minimize conflict factors that may be experienced from the real field survey by showing outcrop photographs and polarizing photomicrographs of rut samples related to each stop and geologic structures. The attitude of students is investigated with the data of field geologic survey for students of an Earth Science class in the College of Education in Chungbuk National University. The results indicate that the educational data for geologic field survey brought positive changes that greatly help students perform field survey in definitive side, especially formation of absolute concepts on earth science.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how elementary pre-service teachers have a perception of 'science'. Especially, this study used photo-narrative method to analysis pre-service teachers' perception of 'science'. Photo-narrative is a way of describing what a study participant wants to say by taking a picture. Participants were 66 elementary pre-service teachers. The results of this study were as follows: First, elementary pre-service teachers used many words such as people, life, everyday as well as scientific terms such as phenomena and principles to explain science. Secondly, the pictures used by elementary pre-service teachers to explain science included household goods, natural phenomena, advanced devices, and living things. Third, elementary pre-service teachers explained science with knowledge of science, knowledge, convenience, and nature of science. As a result of this study, it was found that elementary pre-service teachers recognized that science is closely related to life and that it is necessary for learning. The results of this study can contribute not only to curriculum composition and curriculum content of elementary and middle school science education but also to curriculum development for teacher training.

  • The general urban plan is the plane plan which limits general and uniformed constructions; however, the district unit plan is the solid plan that can leads various constructions by discriminating by plot, housing area and lot. Therefore, for the zone plan, not only the two-dimensional plot information such as plot usage plan, but also the three-dimensional plot information needs to be used to analyze lighting, sewerage and directions. To fulfill such requirements, the information can be gathered using GIS and photogrammetric method for the reasonable and efficient zone plan. In this research, the information about the testing area for the zone plan has been gathered using GIS method, and the three-dimensional model about the area has been built using the satellite image and DEM. As the result, plot usage analysis, direction analyst, water system analysis, and slope analysis has been done and used efficiently to build the district unit plan. Also, after the result after applying the analyzed result to the actual area says this is very appropriate and efficient.

  • In order to generate database, we need to obtain speedy and corret topographic information according to requisite purpose. Generally methods to an acquisition of topographic information are available by the use of maps, satellite images, stereo models of aerophoto and so forth. But we must choose a optimal method in consideration of area of object region, spatial solution of image, required accuracy and economic. Therefore, this study aims at providing the establish method of efficient topographic data base of small object region by means of spatial layer techniques of geo-spatial information system and using acquisition of geo-information and production method of base map with photoballoon system to obtain topographic information for reasonable plan and design of object region which select a zone preparation of a collective village with small region. As a result of this study, we decided an f-stop and a shutter speed of camera to obtain accurate stereo model and were able to obtain stereo photography and topography for small region by using of photoballoon system through accuracy analysis according to change flight height and air base speedly and economically. We can establish the data base useable to efficient plan and design as existence map with overlay plan drawing.

  • The objective of the paper was to estimate the changes in acreages of tidal flats after the seawall construction at the Asan Bay and the Chunsu Bay from topographic maps, hydrographic charts, and Landsat TM images. The tidal floats from topographic maps published in one year differ significantly from that in the other, which appears to be attributed to the tide levels at the time of photographing. The hydrographic charts showed that tidal flats increase at rates of 22.3 ha/yr at the Asan Bay and 56.6 ha/yr at the Chunsu Bay after the dike construction. Applying the ISODATA method of unsupervised classifications for the Landsat TM images, the tidal flats were identified, and the resulting acreages for each image estimated. The resulting tidal flats increased at the rates of 21.3 ha/yr at the Asan Bay and 47.3 ha/yr at the Chunsu Bay during twelve years after the dike construction. It was found that the rates of the annual increases from the two data are very close and the differences result from the coastal lines at the charts and the TM images.

  • Since most large earthquakes occur by reactivation of preexisting active faults, it is important to understand the locations and characteristics of active faults in terms of earthquake hazard research and earthquake disaster prevention. Recently, several remote sensing techniques are broadly used for lineament analysis performed prior to field surveys in active fault surveys. The aim of this paper is introducing simple principles and application examples of each remote sensing technique (satellite remote sensing, airborne remote sensing, InSAR, LiDAR) widely used for active fault investigation. This paper also explains the analytical methods for the slope break generated by fault activity based on GIS and the horizontal displacement of the strike-slip fault. In discussion, we would like to discuss the problems and solutions on making DEM based on aerial photography, and a new developed technique (RRIM) to overcome the problems of DEM based on aerial LiDAR. Understanding remote sensing techniques used for active fault investigation and utilizing appropriate methods depending on the situation and limitations of each remote sensing technique are important for effective active fault investigation.
